Woooooooooooooo..hooooooooooo! At last a victory!!! THe boys were magnificent today - put in a great 4 quarter performance and despite a bit of a scare at the end got the result they deserved - a great win!!! Everyone put in and Cousins, Kerr, Taylor, Phil, Embley and Chambers were brilliant - congrats guys on a magnificent win!!

Gee Richard Osborne is going to be receiving a few phone calls during the week isn't he, first McKernan, second someone else and now WC. Maybe he does have a good thing going!

Vis

PS YOU BLOODY BEAUTY!!! :D :D

You bloody ripper! That was a good honest effort and the boys should really be proud of the way they played today. As for Osborne, I'm sure we can find a role for him with the club!!!!!!

Match Report

I posted this earlier but it doesn't seem to have come through...

West Coast broke their record losing run with a hard-fought win against Melbourne at Subiaco Oval this afternoon. It was a
much improved effort from the Eagles who finally managed to put together four quarters of football.

West Coast 15.5 95
Melbourne 13.10 88

The Eagles have been working on their mental approach this week, undertaking
a course in mental imagery and "morphing". But it was all physical in the
Eagles forward line before the opening bounce as Scott Cummings and Demon
David Neitz had a bit of push and shove going.

Elsewhere on the ground, David Wirrpunda was given the job of containing Jeff
Farmer in the midfield, while Melbourne's Guy Rigoni had Eagles captain Ben
Cousins. In his first game back from injury, Ashley McIntosh took up the
unfamiliar territory of the forward line.

The Demons burst out of the blocks, with two midfield errors from West Coast
leading to Jeff Farmer goals. Melbourne kicked their third as the Eagles
stretchered off the obligatory first quarter knee-reconstruction candidate - Chad
Morrison's turn this week - and it was all starting to look horribly familiar.

Meanwhile Cummings was off under the blood rule. Although the emergency
umpire was right there it seems that there was no infringement, though how
you end up bleeding without the ball having even come to your end of the
ground yet is anyone's guess.

The Eagles began to fight back with a goal to Andrew Embley followed up by a
typical crumbing effort from Phil Matera. Cousins then kicked one from fifty to
fire up the team.

The rest of the first quarter was pretty even - the only question was whether the
Eagles would maintain their competitiveness throughout the match, or whether
they would capitulate yet again, as the Demons led by a goal at the break.

In the second quarter West Coast kept on coming back at Melbourne, but the
Demons always replied to hold the lead. The Eagles took the lead for the first
time at the twenty minute mark of the term, and led by five points at half time.

By this stage Embley had kicked three, while Glen Jakovich and Wirrpunda
were looking pretty good - Wirrpunda's first few minutes on Jeff Farmer
notwithstanding. The team as a whole was also looking more committed and
emotional about the game than they have in a long time.

The third quarter was a real arm-wrestle with neither team able to get a break,
and it seemed that this game was going to go down to the wire. Cousins as
always was racking up possessions almost at will - the difference this week
was that he wasn't doing it alone. Jakovich, Wirrpunda, Chad Fletcher and
Richard Taylor offered quality support. Taylor in particular showed huge
commitment to the ball, recording seven tackles on top of his twenty-five
possessions for the match.

In the final quarter the Eagles burst out of the block with four unanswered
goals, three of them to Matera, and with the wind behind them and rain
beginning to fall it looked like it was all over.

But the Demons never gave it away, and the Eagles relaxed too early.
Melbourne peppered the goals in the final minutes of the match but couldn't
bridge the gap, and there was relief all round as the siren sounded on a seven
point win for West Coast.

It was a good effort from the Eagles, who had to fight all the way. It gives some
hope that there will be one or two more wins this season, and a decent platform
to launch into 2002.

On the down side, yet another players season looks to be over due to a knee
injury. The exact magnitude of Morrison's injury is not yet known, but it does
not look hopeful. Andrew Williams also left the ground late in the match after a
heavy knock, but should be okay for next weeks trip to Adelaide.

WHAT A WIN WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO!!!!! IM ESCTATIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well just had to get that off my chest. Well who thought we were gonna win when the score was 3 1 19 to 0 0 0 and Morrison was being carted off the ground!!

Cousins was awesome again, what about that captains goal!!! He got taken high just outside our 50 metre arc but got the handpass away to Gardy who kicked a huge goal from outside 50 but play on wasnt called?? There was some arguing and Cousins was talking to the ump saying why not give advantage ect ect. THe ump would have none of it so Cuz just grabbed the ball went around his opponent and kicked an absolute beauty from 50 out!!! I jumped out my seat!! lol.

And how about Wirrpunda's welcome return to form. 34 possesions and he was dynamic out of defence. If only he could keep up that consistency like Cousins does, hopefully it will be a turning point for him in the season. Jakovich was also good, i think everyone is crawling back into there shells after saying he was finished. I knew he would rebound, he's too good not to.

And what about the support!! Embly kicked 4 goals, Fletcher had 25 possesions, Kerr had 24, Wooden 22, Taylor 25. And this all without a couple of our main midfielder when healthy in Kemp and Braun. If they give Cousins this kind of support every week then we will be in most games instead of being blown away.

Matera found some form too kicking 5 and our tackling and pressure to keep it in our attacking zone was brilliant. We had 43 tackles to 25!! Thats the kind of pressure that needs to be applied every week!

Oh and lets not forget Jones effort of taking Woey out of the game and i think Fletch got the job on Yze. Together they had 20 possesions!! Cousins on his own had 17 more possions than the reigning brownlow medallist and a damn good midfielder in Yze. We really did control the middle of the ground and Gardy also gave White a towelling :)

But im getting way overexcited. So ill go now.

PS. whoever said Wooden was a dud :D

This is what I call a birthday treat...

Well, the boys have done me proud..who told 'em it was my 21st? :)

The midfield was a vast improvement on previous weeks, even my favourite target of abuse Mr Wooden was getting in there and doing his bit. And for once, we actually had a half forward line that was taking marks! If Embley can keep that sort of form for a bit longer we won't need to keep pushing McIntosh or Gardiner up there and sacrificing their usual spots. Interesting to note that nearly half our goals were big-arse bombs from outside 50, says something when we were managing to be very very accurate for the whole day.

(I too loved that free kick that got brought back to the top of the 50m line. Gardiner I think it was took out the man on the mark, Cuz takes 4 steps and parks the ball between the big sticks. Inspirational stuff.)

Last year I was all for delisting Wooden. Then I saw him play in the WAFL Grand Final in midfield and thought 'that guy is being played out of position in the back pocket for the Eagles. In WAFL he has looked good at LHB.LC or on the ball he is hard, passionate and still very young. I also noticed him shouting over other Eagles player to pick Dees players up before bounces and throw ins so he is able to take responsibility as a team leader. Also, you may notice that he still doesn't have full mobility in his shoulder and still played a blinder.
Well done Josh. I hope more get behind you.

Im with you Frodo, im quickly becoming a Josh Wooden fan. Hope he can keep it up and will be a certainty for the Adelaide game, could this be the year when he finally breaks through to become a regular Eagle.

Just regarding the Richard Osborne thing. I heard Eagles Football Operations Manager Steve Woodhouse say on 6PR that the Club had Osborne over to sound him out. It will not proceed with his program.

I believe what got the boys fired up was Dean Kemps pre match address which left him and the players in tears. If this Club is about Passion, tradition and doing it for the Jumper who better than to inspire than Tommy Kemp. They should never forget those feelings.

GO EAGLES!
