Honestly I was on board getting Clarkson at GWS or Brisbane, though I doubted it'd be Brisbane.

But $1.6m is the type of money that will cripple your off-field given the soft cap.
You can pay over the soft cap, but it’s a dollar for dollar “tax” back to the AFL.

We showed with Fagan and as have Freo with Longmuir that you don't need to pay the world to get results.
In that logic and case, let’s just get Justin Leppitsch back to the club as our head coach again, would help retain McStay for us at the very least from all of the other 17 clubs hehe :p

It’s not such a bad thing to lose McStay, we need to reguvenate a little bit.

Footy is littered with clubs that mortgaged the house to get name coaches with a profile and fell flat on their faces. Malthouse, Blight, Hird ,Voss , Barassi, Tuddenham ,Norm Smith , Eade , Jesaulenko , Walls ,Pagan just a few off the top of my head who were going to turn everything around and couldn't.

Although think about it talk Jackson might get over a mill.
Who is more important the coach or one player

Seriously though, I wouldn't mind trying out one of the top assistants going around. Yze or Kingsley perhaps.

Sure, but no club has shown any desire to pay that tax so from a logical perspective it acts as a pretty hard cap - even if it's not enforced as such.

Whilst I’ve said previously I could see Fages vacating if he believes that he’s done all he can with this group as he strikes me as that sort of person to put the club ahead of himself, where I do find it a little unlikely is he would know Clarko would be bringing in his own people for assistant roles etc.

Fages seems like a very loyal person to the coaching team he has assembled, I don’t think he’d want to put them out of a job.

Leigh Matthews regularly said that the importance of the coach was greatly overstated. He used always give praise to the playing group and suggested that success was an all of club thing. Maybe Leigh was being too modest but there is a large kernel of truth to what he said.

Similar to Leigh, Clarko had a crack side for his own three-peat.

i can't help thinking that the aura and mystique of Clarko is somewhat overblown

Remember Kennett trying to get rid of him a couple of years in.

I agree totally with what Leigh says . The importance of the coach is overstated but because he's the figurehead that people can identify with a club he gets the majority of the praise or scorn depending on how they're performing.

If a coach is poor he can definitely ****** a team's progress say in Blight's case where St.Kilda decided to pay him a bucketload and he just wanted to phone it in. But there have been many proven/good coaches who haven't been able to improve teams much . If you have the players you want someone competent ,diligent and relatable whom the players respect. That's usually good enough. These days coaching is a team thing so you also need a good organiser who can delegate and draw a team together.

Interested to know seriously whether peoples opinions have now changed on this with the body of work we have put in for the entire year this year, not just including todays result.

Unless Clarkson instantly rebuilds our list I don’t think he changes much. We’ve gone all in with the guys we have and we’re stuck where we are

I would hope there are some changes over the off season.

I would also hope Clarkson would bring a change in game plan, and some innovation to our game day coaching.

Surely we need to consider changing our D50 next year though, cause we are just conceding way too many points compared to the AFL average. and it has hurt us in quite a few games this year alone.

Fagan admitting to possible selection errors might seem fine. But does it mean he is starting to second guess his decisions? Cause that's a short cut to coaching hell that doesn't help the team.

We need a decisive coach whose opinions are respected by the players - if the coach believes, it must be so. Creates confident players who don't fold under pressure.

As many others have mentioned, defense begins further up the field.

I do agree we have a problem with our tall defenders and Rich though.

I do not know what the answer is, with our current players.
