 can anyone tell me why Austin WAS NOT in our best 22 on sunday considering there was weakness in our defence even though we won.

Re: weaness in defence

Probably because Port dropped a tall forward - Salter - wrongly if you read their board. Hard to argue with a 9 goal belting of a potential finalist.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him back in for Adelaide - he looked OK at Preston on Saturday. I agree that we need an extra tall defender against the better sides.

With no Jamo in the team, and obviously no Waite, I also thought that Austin may come into the team, given we could be exposed down back. Still, we did a pretty good job with only Thornton and Bower playing yesterday.

One possibility is to push Setanta back, bring Warnock in, and use Kreuzer up forward. Or use Cloke up forward also, who I thought was ok yesterday.

our defence was good and no tall port forward had a good day, I can't see where you are coming from here, we had them covered.

Melbourne have a taller forward line, so maybe he'll be in for them.

We risk Setanta not performing down back. We risk Warnock being under-done. We lose Kreuz's mobility around the ground etc.

Warnock is a great prospect for next year, but changes our structure too much too close to finals. Likewise with excluding Austin, and using Setanta down back.

Setanta needs to be left up forward, and Austin needs to come in to get some games before finals. Pretty simple I would have thought.

Cloke was shocking on Saturday. As was mentioned on the TV Cloke is in " Powers best 22, with his disposal."

Cloke took many strong marks all across the ground, rucked well, provided a target etc
He had not played AFL for a while so yes gave away some free kicks and a few other blemishes however if you actually compare it to his form before he was dropped he performed very well.
The guy is not Dean Cox or W Tredrea so do not expect him to equal their games. Cloke was servicable. Whether that is enough to retain his spot in the 22 is up to the MC.

Actually, Dennis Commetti said that meaning that Port kept on running out of defence and kicking it straight to Cloke. That happened many a time.

Cloke did well when in the forward line, around the ground playing in the ruck he isnt good. But i think he showed that he has something to offer at CHF, possibly more than Setanta.

As for Austin, would be nice to develop him a a defender to release waite to the forward when he returns.

It was obvious this was an issue sunday. Wiggins on westhoff at times was giving up way too much height. Luckily we were on top in the middle at this time

I don't want to mess with the structure that much. Setanta has been good for us at CHF not only taking a few grabs and kicking a couple, but his defensive pressure is good too.

Austin should come in this week, give him a run in the seniors for a couple. We WILL need him come finals time.:thumbsu:

Austin should play .. Were basically f****d if T-bird goes down , our defence is the only chink in our armour this season .. I rekon we would almost be real flag contenders if waite and jamo were flying .. But i suppose the Hawks could say the same thing aswell..

Austin gets lost on leads at times, he's still got a bit to work on but he's going to be a good player, he was pretty good in the VFL, if we think we need a tall defender he will play.

But who do you drop? Wiggins was alright despite some bad kicks. Hampson has to come in for Cloke.

Wiggo took some good grabs but that kicking will not improve. Cannot afford to turn the ball over. Grigg is better value. Hampson if fit walks into the Cloke spot I guess.

Ifor 1 am glad he was dropped, I prefer he stay's out of the side,
Im not trying to bag him or anything, I just don't think he is up to it yet.

His game is better than Hampson, and I prefer cloke to stay in the side. He is a better kick than hampson, a better mark than him, and gets around the ground better than him, and last but not least, he dont tap it straight down the oppositions throat's. So all in all Im hoping Clokey play's from now on.

The weakness in defence is largely due to our inability to move the ball quickly and hit targets.
Having Wiggins there only accentuates this as we also have Armfield.
Thornton - with respect to the good form he is in - has a tendency to hold up play and to look backwards and sidewards initially rather than quickly m,ove the ball forward.
Austin coming in offers a 'solid' - certainly not great - defender who has pace and can play medium or tall and DOES look to move the ball quickly.
Prior to him going to CHF, I was in favour of Setanta playing on monster opposition forwards, but I'm sold on him now at CHF. He provides a strong marking option, and despite what some with clouded vision have said, his 2nd and 3rd efforts are invaluable in holding the footy in the F50. Given time, he will continue to develop well until a better option bobs up. IF and when we need him to cover down back during a game, he can.

thats the kind of educated comment thats a pleasure to read i couldnt agree with you more alice. take note all you smart...es . be constructive.
