Websites & ISP's

G'day,

As you have guessed, I'm clueless when it comes to website design and ISP's. Can anyone suggest options for me in creating a website and having it hosted. It's actually for my cousin who is an electrician so budget will be a massive constraint.

What are the options- ie programs and companies?

Thanks in advance.

I'm a Graphic Designer so I know a bit of web design (I design and code for clients from time to time).

My website is hosted with bluehost.com - about $80 per year or something like that for the domain name and space which is massive.

You get what you pay for in terms of the design / coding aspect.

Then people, like you (or your cousin (no offence either)), don't factor in a logo (if the client wants one), imagery (can you supply it), etc.

I'll do it for your cousin, but I don't work for peanuts. PM me if you want a price.

EDIT: Oh, and typically your ISP won't have good enough hosting space or options, so don't bother with that.

As the guy above me said, don't go with your ISP their prices and plans are terrible.

First off you need to register the domain name, most hosting companies have an option for you to do that on their website.

webcity.com.au is good for hosting in Australia.
steadfast is pretty good and cheap ($50 US a year) though hosted in the US.

Typically you wont get a website designed and built for under $700 that's static.

If you're looking at having a content management system so you can update it yourself, you're looking at a couple of thousand minimum for anything decent.

If budget is a problem, then a good option might be to contact a uni near wherever you / cousin lives and contact the computer science / multimedia course coordinators and see if some students would be interested in designing and building it. Will save you lots of money.

good luck

Agreed. If you are looking at selling through a website you need to pay the price. Ive seen people go cheap and are unable to edit listings at their own leisure, resulting in huge problems.

I used cheapdomains for my url, and is hosted by the company who designed it.

I've been through a number of website hosts and have settled on www.hostgator.com I've been with them for sometime - they're pretty cheap and the service and reliability has been outstanding. I pay $7.95US/month - that allows hosting unlimited domains, unlimited storage and bandwidth.

If you want to signup please click on this link (as I'll get a nice kickback) http://secure.hostgator.com/cgi-bin/affiliates/clickthru.cgi?id=bshadow
