Essendon v North

Just a bit on the game first. Yet another slow start. They did not really look all that fired up at all and North got full use of the corridor through some lazy midfield zone. There was the odd good patches of play but it was not until the third quarter that they played some good footy.

Skills remain an issue but the use of the ball by foot was a heap better than last week. Most of the turnovers where from kicking to contests because there was a lack of run through the middle and players got themselves in trouble because of the lack of options to kick to.
The real problem here is we don’t work hard enough to create the second receiving option coming out of defence. This leads to us having to kick backwards or give off multiple handballs under pressure. People can say what they want about the game plan but it is this lack of work through the middle and second efforts to provide options which really hurts us. It leads to the stuffing around with the footy because there are limited long options to kick to.
Too many blokes simply walking through the middle of the ground or not making an effort to get to space and make an option. Has been a problem for a few years now.

It appears that half forward could be a problem as well in the second kick option. There seems to be a lack of leads pushing up the ground that can give the players coming out of defence a good option. When McPhee has been playing well he gives a long lead to the wing which gives the defenders an option coming out. the problem is when he is not there we seem to have a distinct lack of leads coming from half forward.

The other problem we have is our zone is often not tight enough. Players in the midfield are happy to sit 5 or 6 meters off and concede a possession to their opponent when they push back rather than tightening the zone a little and cutting off the side ways option or some of the short kick options. There are a few guilty parties including Monfries, Watson, Stanton, Dyson, Nash, McPhee and Lovett.
We leak too many easy possessions through the middle because of it and every time North got a run on it was from a goal where they got an easy run through the middle.

As usual we are still not great at protecting the ball carrier. Handball and block seems to be non existant for a lot of our blokes. It is more of a handball and see if i can get it back for another stat mindset.

As for the game itself it was a good hit out and despite the loss parts of the game where probably the best we have played this pre season.

To start off the guys from the squad of 29 who did not play where Jetta, Zaharakis, Lovett-Murray and Houli.

Neagle. Simply should not be selected for round one. Played behind too often. Lack of second efforts lead to his man running off and getting involved in the play. Has to play 4 or 5 weeks with Bendigo to try and get his match fitness up to anywhere near AFL standard.

Dyson. Was on the bench for the first quarter and was used after Watson went off. Solid game. Got his share of the ball and worked hard. Not too many stuff ups from what I can remember

Watson , was going ok until he got kneed in the back of the head in a marking contest.

Stanton, Usual good work on the offensive side. Definitely improved by the run last week. A lot less fumbles and a few of the marks stuck. Still ordinary defensive wise and was one of the culprits who let his man loose through the middle.

Monfries , same sort of Gus game. Got a few possessions but did not really have an effect on the game. Seems to end up as the lead up forward a lot rather than being a crumbing forward.

Winderlich , ok game but looked to be struggling to push to space a few times and his disposal was a bit scratchy. Keeps going though and got the extended hit out he needed.

Lovett , not as good as his previous few games. Did a few nice things here and there but could have worked a bit harder. Like Stanton he was guilty of concentration lapses in his defensive work.

Lonergan , good game. Went in hard all day.

Demspey , showed good dash again and used the footy heaps better this week. Put his body on the line a few times.

Nash , did not get a run until Myers went of injured. Nothing special. Kicked a good goal, turned a couple over. Usual stuff.

Lloyd , pretty good game. Worked hard up the ground and kicked a few goals.

Hille , we will be in serious trouble without this blokes effort around the ground. Very good again.

Slattery , was ok until he hurt his ankle going hard at a contest late in the second quarter.

Skipworth , very quiet first quarter. Was reasonably good after quarter time but not as good as his first couple of games.

Hurley , did some good stuff. Ran of his man to receive a handball and kick a good 50 meter goal. Reasonable in defence but had his moments of trouble. Ok game.

Myers, had a couple of kicks early but went off with an ankle injury.

Lucas , still looks very scratchy. Struggled to mark most of the night and just looks out of touch. Kept trying hard and had a reasonable hit out. His opponent ran off him a bit as well.

Daniher , tries hard but needs to slow down 5% at times. He attacks the contest or the ball carrier too hard and it leads him to running under the ball or past the player with the ball. Seems to be coming along ok. Has to watch his chip kicks as he can give them too much air.

Davey , better again this week. Looking good for round 1.

Ryder. Not a lot of the ball. Ok in defence but I wish he would concentrate on tightening up on his opponent a bit more. He gets lead to the ball way too often.

Fletcher , good game. Fletch is Fletch. He just keeps on keeping on. Kicked a great 60 meter goal.

McPhee , looked good up forward except he was slightly off line with his kicking. Looked his usual self in defence . He gives you nightmares under pressure. As usual you could not knock his work rate.

Atkinson , came burning out of defence a few times but lack of options to kick to stopped him in his tracks pretty quickly.

Hocking , played everywhere. Spent time on the wing or following Ben Ross early. Played a lot in defence in the second half on a few different guys. Kicked the footy a bit more today and took the game on a couple of times.
Made a couple of errors but was one of a few that seemed to be able to play hard man on man in defence.

Bellchambers, good effort in the ruck and is improving around the ground.

Bendigo v Northern Bullants

Very wet so the game was not great. Not sure of the exact score as there was no score board I think Bendigo won by 5 points but I may have missed a score here and there.
Bendigo will be a lot more competitive this year. They have recruited some handy players and look a bit quicker than last year.
They do suffer the same problem our seniors do and that is the movement from half forward or the lack work rate to be the second receiver often leads the person coming out of defence very few options. This was when most of the turn overs happened or the countless short handballs appeared.

Essendon players

Jetta – dropped back to Bendigo this week because of his lack of defence last week. Have to say today was the best game I have seen Leroy play. He was used in the midfield , at half back and half forward. Did not kick nay goals but got a heap of the footy , looked to be concentrating on the defensive aspects much better and put his body on the line a heap of times . He was getting in front , sliding into the pack knowing he was going to get hit. Work rate excellent. Must have had 25 to 30 touches.

Zaharakis – Did not rack up big numbers but came in and out of the game and did some classy stuff. Very good hands at ground level for such a wet day. Skills on the right side very good.

Pears – Solid hit out in defence. Had some good spoils and took a few good marks. Tried to keep the run going out of defence while he was on but he got caught a few times because he had limited options to kick to. Not ready for round one but a good second game.

Hooker – Ok in defence . Tried hard but not a day for talls so he did not have a lot of the ball.

Magin – ok but does not seem to be making an imprint on the game like he should at that level. Runs around and gets a few kicks but never really has a huge effect on the game.

Still – did ok for a wet day. Took a couple of marks but was limited in what impact he could have by the weather.

T Slattery – did ok in parts. Took a few really good one grab marks in front of packs in defence. Tried to keep the run going out of the back half most of the day.

Carroll – only had about 7 or 8 possessions.

Quinn – was every where. Played half back and found the ball all over the place. He is not at AFL level yet but he keeps improving and he knows where to run. Kicking is still a concern but he is hitting targets more regularly with each game.
One of our better players.

Lovett-Murray – very ordinary in the first half. Hardly saw any of the ball. Was better in the third quarter and really good in the last where he had a bit of the footy.

Houli – like Leroy he was back in the seconds to work on the defensive parts. It was a hard game to see if he was actually getting that right as the conditions lead to the game being a rolling scrum of players at times. From what I saw he did everything pretty well. Found the ball a heap, provided run from behind rather than just running forwards for cheap handballs. Was prepared to throw the body into the packs and do the hard yards. He put in a very good 4 quarter performance. For a wet day his skills where excellent. Almost a class above everyone else out there.

German – very good first half in the midfield. Got the hard ball a fair bit but also used his brains and got to space where he could be a receiving option. Kicked an early goal and was hard at the contest. He faded out of the game after half time but certainly showed a bit.

Klemke – solid game at half back. Did not have huge numbers but did not do a lot wrong.

The best Bendigo listed players where Scanlon again who must have had 30 disposals. Bristow did very well in the ruck contests giving us first use of the ball most of the day. Ky Miller was pretty good , very skinny but goes at the contest hard. Henry’s brother Charlie played but I did not notice how much of the footy he got.

Sounds promising with Leroy and Bachar working on there deffensive sides of there games, German sounds promising too, really pleased with a few of the guys, still question marks over Rhys I take it Ant, was he good when he did have the ball in his hands, was Klemke ok when he had the ball, attack on the footy ok, hopefully Pears can have another solid hitout and get up into the seniors.

Cheers Ant. I know how time consuming writing long descriptive pieces are; Your work is very much appreciated. :thumbsu:

Thanks Ant, your reviews are worth reading.

Thanks for the report.

Good news on Leroy. Everyone is getting increasingly frustrated at him teasing the fans with bits of brilliance in all his games but never a consistent performance for us to heap lavish praise on him. 10 possession games simply aren't good enough for Jetta and I expect more of his games to be like this one. Well done Jetta.

Not surprising to read Houli is a class above the rest. Blind Freddy would know that. Get him back in the seniors:D

Good to see these two playing well at VFL level.

There's a lot of talk about these guys not being best 22....... what a load of crap.

Jetta is starting to get the body and fitness to play at this level and Houli should be a lock.

I think fully fit, both have a lot of competition for their places, especially if we play four tall players.

However, we are not fully fit, and I think Houli will get a gig on the half backline, especially with Reimers and Myers unavailable.

Leroy won't play if we have four talls, but is probably against Monfries for a spot.

Maybe we were separated at birth? You must be very good looking man then ;)

I don't get what the Houli angst on this board has been lately.

I use to think the same but whoever it is that keeps mentioning how unaccountable he is, is right. Watched him closely during the NAB Cup and you can bet that if an opposition player was out by himself with nobody on him it would be Houli's opponent. As soon as he gets his defensive game in order he will be a good player.

See Stanton in the sense that he plays one way. Whilst if he played for the likes of Geelong, this may be a non event. The reality is that he plays for an average midfield so his lack of defensive pressure stands out. And if you can't understand the Houli angst, then you can imagine us having a hell of a time trying to figure the Myers anst.

Well that's interesting. If you look at tackle averages last year then Houli is 5th best at our club so he must be doing something right.

Possession, rolling zones, flooding means a lot of time your let your opponent get away from you. It's sometimes difficult to judge whether someone is trying to zone off, being lazy, expecting your team mate to win it and not turn it over, etc, etc

Management wise I don't think it's a bad idea to give Houli and Jetta full games at VFL level at this time. I think both will be primed for round 1.

Great reports Ant. Only brave men venture to Princes Park on days like today.

I see the opposite. If we play 4 talls Jetta has to play.

Agree, Jetta is highly under-rated in the sense people don't realize how much he sets goals up. Plus if he starts getting more of the ball like he did today, then he will be a lock in the starting 18 week in, week out.

Firstly, am I out of the loop or has Myers actually been declared unavailable?

Secondly, I see the 4 tall scenario completely differently. If we have 4 big guys down there, it's going to hit the deck a fair bit; they won't mark everything. We're going to need boys who can read it off the packs; Leroy can do that. He becomes a near certainty for me with 4 big boys.

Great work Ant very good read.

Also glad to see Houli and Jetta doing well on the weekend, coming into their 3rd season you'd be hoping they were ready to show there full potentials.

Bellchambers was another good news piece. Laycocks had it to easy for to long with no opposition for our #2 ruck. Whilst Hille has gone on to become one of the best rucks in the comp he has ambled away so if Bellchambers can step it up and put the pressure on we may finally get a decent ruck duo.

It becomes a question of how many forwards you can fit in the side. While playing Davey, Jetta, Monfries and Skipworth at the feet of the big guys would be nice, that's 8 forwards, or 6 forwards and half of the bench.

That will severely impact on midfield rotations, even if all of the small forwards have a few stints in there.

I watch a lot of Essondon games, and i recon Houli is best suited to the half back line. He plays tight on his man and he can run and create. Jetta in my opinion is best suited half foward flank/ pocket where he can create and kick goals.

Thats just my 2 cents worth!!
