That is about the 79th similar article over the last month and to think that the club can only do something once our year is finished, whether that is the end of August or sometime in September. The media are milking the **** out of Carlton articles lol.

Change is needed at Carlton – and Graham Wright is ready to make the big calls

Zac Williams will be close to a mill a year?
Gross mismanagement and poor discernment. Should have minimum games played requirement built in. Maybe his contract does. Who knows.

I question how Zac would be on a million a season a good six seasons after the trade.

... which is almost beside the point, really: why did we pay for a bloke who averaged 14 games a season - with three seasons of 8 having played all games, or at least nore than 20 - such a spectacular wage for such speculative prospects?

"He'll play midfield, he proved he can do it"; for a period of three games consecutively, not for an entire season.
"He'll revolutionise our ball movement from half back"; we already had Doc, and we brought over Saad in the same ****ing season; why did we need 3 rebounding half backs???
"We needed to show that we can get in the big trades"; to ****ing whom did we need to prove anything? It might be funny to laugh at Nth and the Aints for being unable to attract players, but get better onfield and it simply won't matter.

Honestly, I didn't agree with bringing any of Saad, Williams or Gov over. We didn't need them, and their contracts have been millstones for us. Acres was cheap, and so was Hewitt, but these two were opportunistic, which is what IMO trading should be.

You need to be able to develop your own players and let those who pop up happen when they happen.

But that's the problem, really: we didn't have the capability to develop in house at the time, and what we did have and could do we certainly didn't trust. And beyond that, we couldn't be honest enough with ourselves to reflect on why we actually went through with these trades, and thus low capability caused poor decisions.

This is Carlton. Where slightly above players come to get rich.

I mean, we got through the five year Gov contract, but because he had a career best year, another two year contract. Fine, whatever. Now we are hearing he has a one year trigger. Wtf?

And what does my head in more is when you hear team mates say it's warranted because he is highly rated and valued internally, within our 4 walls, blah blah. Talk about boys a club, all feathering each others highly paid nests.

In fairness though, what are they going to say? The media are going to ask questions of players like Williams and Gov because it’s obvious to everyone and their dog that they are overpaid.

So how are players going to respond? They can’t exactly say’ “well you are right, they are receiving a mint and not really earning it.” That’s your shortcut way to massive cultural issues right there.

So they have to say something which in some sort of vague way might justify their salaries.

This is Carlton. The appetite to wait any longer has been zero from the fans and board alike.

We finished last in 2018 and 16th in 2019.

Every man and his dog were clamouring for us to improve quickly. We'd won a few games and looked to be poised to leap up the ladder. SOS was gone and Austin needed a feather in the cap.

Williams was probably seen as the best available at the time.

If you discount 150k which seems to be around the premium you pay for a FA, his contract isn't that bad. Was quoted as about 6x850 at the time.

It's his inability to stay healthy that has soured the deal.

I'd say nothing other than maybe "that's between the player and the club".

We better strap ourselves in. This guy is going to totally shake up the joint, and will take no prisoners.
Cook was the stable hand we needed at the time. His job s done. We’re booming off field.
Now it’s Wright’s time. His ‘football first’ approach is exactly what we need right now.

This is a great article.

Graham Wright has a very good CV. So glad we have him now.

"...been a recruiter (Brisbane Lions and Hawthorn), list manager (Hawthorn) and head of football (Hawthorn and Collingwood, including the Pies’ 2023 flag)."

“He knows what he wants and the way he wants the game played and Carlton don’t play that game,” a former colleague of Wright said this week.

A quote from that article, doesn’t sound good for Vossy ….

I think the quote that sounds worse for Vossy is where it says he was fourth out of four candidates for the Collingwood job, and a long way back at that.

... which falls into the "We had to prove we could attract the best" portion of the excuses we told ourselves.

The problem was that we - the club, not the fans - looked at the shiny new thing rather than what he sugarcoated: a development/list management group without any confidence in their ability to develop his talent outside of trading.

That's my problem: not that we got him in, but what getting him and Saad in represented.

His contract has been a millstone around our neck ever since.

... which we knew about prior to getting the bloke.

Seriously. His games per season average at Carlton is bang on his availability at GWS; this isn't our injury foibles, this is the player. At both clubs, he's averaged 14 games a year.

It was a bad decision for any number of reasons, and it remains a bad decision. You do not trade to make up for an inability to develop; at least, you absolutely shouldn't.

Great article… shows a lot.. TDK won’t get near a million, all coaches at risk with Voss basically out if his depth when he went for the pies role. Appreciate how Wright been sitting in the box at times.. perhaps our coaches are panicking and that’s reflected in our performances.

I agree with the points made in the article, but I can assure everyone - Zac Williams is nowhere near earning $900k (or a million, for that matter) this year.

That reference was lazy journalism.

SOS left late 2019. Happy to be corrected but pretty sure Austin was list manager in September 2020 when Williams was signed

The groundwork between SOS and Zac had already begun, and Austin simply inherited those discussions. No idea if the financial terms had already been agreed upon.

another well credentialed person coming to Carlton with a shopping list of expectations. I really hope he makes the club better and greatly contributes to on field success. But at this point I’ve see far too many messiahs come through the club that are unable to leave that indelible mark that leads to ultimate success.!
