Eastern Ranges midfielder Dylan Moore drafted to Hawthorn after breakout season in TAC Cup

SMALL in stature but not in determination.

Dylan Moore was running around for Rowville in the Eastern Football League last year and will wear the same colours in the AFL in 2018 after being drafted by Hawthorn.

Ranked by Champion Data as the 12th best player in the draft pool, the Eastern Ranges product was one of the bargain picks when the Hawks swooped at selection No.67.

But Moore’s journey to the elite level hasn’t come without its sceptics.

  • The hardworking 176cm, 66kg midfielder has defied doubters who believed he was too small to make the grade, emerging as a bright prospect in the TAC Cup this year.

“I kind of thought about just before I got to Hawthorn actually on the weekend, it was good to reflect and go, ‘you know what, I was good enough’,” Moore said.

“It doesn’t matter about the size, I finally made it.”

The 18-year-old enjoyed a strong start to the season and was rewarded with Vic Metro honours, displaying his elite endurance, clean skills and versatility as a crumbing forward.

Averaging 23 disposals (11 contested) across his four games in the national championships, he was duly named All Australian.

“That was when I really thought it (being drafted) could become a reality because I made an impact at the highest level for an 18-year-old,” Moore said.

“I thought, ‘you know what, maybe I am good enough’.”

Eastern Ranges talent manager Len Villani credited Moore for his perseverance through the talent pathway.

“To come where he has come from and to be that sort of size and stature and a lot of people along the way tell him, ‘nah, you can’t, you can’t’,” Villani said.

“Well, he just kept getting over those hurdles and kept pushing forward and his workrate and his effort is enormous and that’s his point of difference.

“If you’ve got the talent, you’ve got the will and the desire and you’ve got something special about you, and he does in terms of that spirit, drive, workrate and effort, then you give yourself an opportunity.”

Seems the kid has some brains on him too! His name appeared twice for Caulfield in the latest ATAR results (individual study scores over 40 are published)

Good on him for his hard work and dedication to his studies :thumbsu:

Nice one. Thanks for sharing.

Kind of crazy how there’s still so much prejudice about height amongst recruiters. So many great short players throughout the history of the game. Far from being rare exceptions.

Ruckmen and key position players are just about the only positions where there is a strong correlation between height and success. And even then there’s plenty of “undersized” (relative to peers) key forwards and backs that have been stars.

It’s really the perfect game for a shorter person. A game that uses a non-spherical ball (causing chaos when it hits the ground), is played in wet weather, and has so much of the play occurring with the ball below knee level.

Hopefully he lives up to that 12th rating. An absolute steal if he does.

Spoke to someone close to the club yesterday who said that the Hawks were genuinely planning to take Moore with their first pick. They absolutely love the kid but couldn’t believe that Worpel was still available so took him in the hope that they could still jag Moore with their second pick.

Needless to say they were over the moon getting Worpel and Moore and believe that our third pick has huge upside. Made an interesting comment that they really love the make up of all three personality wise. Makes me think that we have really learnt our lesson with picking guys like Gartlett, Thorpe etc,

Yet they give him the #36, go figure.

We have definitely moved on from the days when we used top 10 draft picks on blokes who attended the draft in a wheelchair o_O.

Yes, we now use the pick to trade for blokes in wheelchairs.
Getting in early ensures we NAB (pun intended) the wheelchair guy before other clubs do. Plus it removes the suspense for fans.

Have we? Burton had a severe knee injury that was not fit to participate in all draft camp activities. Omeara (a trade) was brought in under an injury cloud. Morrison had suffered an acl 18 months prior. Seems to me we are still willing to gamble on injured players. Dowler didn’t fail to make it due to his body. It was all missing up stairs for that guy unfortunately.

Rightly or worngly, I always felt we over did the grab a kid that has dropped due to an injury and try to get a steal.

It seemed to increase after we under-rated Selwood, yet drafted Dowler...

I must say, I always felt taking a gamble at pick six on a bloke with a shattered pelvis was too risky, unless he was the absolute elite super-star of his age group, but he wasn't.

Burton on the other hand was a risk worth taking.

I would love a recruiter to write a book with someone like Emma Quayle about the decisions they made and the assessment of players, right or wrong...

I agree with this for several reasons.

Mainly because in 2005/6 we were still a rabble and were rebuilding through several drafts with multiple top picks.

In 2015 we had just won 3 flags in a row and taking a punt on Burton with pick 19 probably seemed like a high risk/reward which appears to have paid off in spades.

You know on draft day a few years back i was shocked that the Bulldogs took such a risk on stringer after his badly broken leg. I later felt stupid for questioning it as he was looking like he would be an absolute star, then he had 2 poor years and got booted to the cheats.

A lot happens after draft day to determine whether players make it or not. I have no doubt that if we took Tambling in 2004 he would have had a much better career and if Richmond took Franklin, Lewis or Roughead they wouldn't have been as successful.

Morning lads, my Dad who is an avid junior football viewer & junior coach, would often go down to watch Eastern games because his neighbours son plays there.
Anyway, he’d often ring me and tell me about the kids who look good and will get drafted. Always talking about Rainer, Dow, Davies -Uniacke and how they’ll be stars, but he told me about this lightly built, short bloke named Dylan Moore who was so smooth in traffic, rarely got caught, elite ball user and is pure class.
Said ‘geez I’d love him at the Hawks’.

So you can imagine his elation when we drafted him.
Kids got a heap of developing to do physically but he’s a smooth, pure footballer.
