Welsh commits for another two years

Crows leading goal kicker Scott Welsh has re-signed with the Club until the end of the 2006 season. Welsh who led the Club’s goal kicking in 2000 with 47 majors, again proved to be the main avenue to goal in 2004, kicking 36 goals, nine ahead of Wayne Carey, despite the fact that he was sidelined with injury for six matches throughout the season.

Originally from West Adelaide, Welsh was a member of the 1999 Kangaroos premiership team before being traded back to his home state to continue his AFL career with Adelaide. He played all 22 matches in an impressive debut year with the Crows and finished the year atop of the goal kicking with 47, eight ahead of Peter Vardy, and took the fifth most number of marks at the Club with 88.

He played a further eighteen games in 2001 taking his AFL tally to 76, however seasons 2002 and 2003 were forgettable ones as he was hit hard by injury and managed to play only 23 of the 49 games.

After an injury-free pre season, Welsh was looking forward returning to his best form in season 2004, and he had an extra incentive to play well when he lined up against the Kangaroos in round one. Not only was he playing against the team where had been part of a premiership with in 1999, but he had finally reached game number 100.

His ability to provide the Crows with a focal point was well illustrated when he booted 21 goals betweens round 13 and 16. Renowned for his fast leading and accurate goal kicking, Welsh is pleased have re-signed.

“I think the next few years will be very exciting at the Club,” he said. “ We have some very talented youngsters coming through and Neil is a very positive and passionate coach.

“We will work hard over the pre season and look forward to improving next year as a team.”

Good news. Hopefully he returns to his 2000 form and plays every game.

Hopefully it's somewhat performance-based. ;)
No issue with his performance when Welshy get's on the field - ie. should have a large matchday component in his salary!

Really rate Welshy not only for his goal-kicking, but also when he plays our forward line tends to apply much more pressure on the opposition backman. Others tend to follow when you hav someone leading by example with the tackling, etc.

If Welshy can stay injury-free & play every game, it will go a long way to us making the finals in 2005.

Im stoked that he has signed on.
Although he is injury plagued and sometime a little inconsistant up forward he still does take the oppositions best defender and always looks lively.
As Kane pointed out, his forward line pressure is awesome and others do follow his lead. He also adds that little bit of grunt too which is nice to see, loves to hit someone and tackle them.

I've got to say, I was underwhelmed by Welsh's forward line pressure this year. Admittedly, he missed a few games early in the year when the Crows played over here a lot, but I thought he looked pretty disinterested in putting pressure on the backmen in the games I was at, other than once in a while running through someone illegally.

Sorry Marvin - couldnt disagree more...Squeshly has been our most desperate forward this year - and in fact since he has been at the club. Sure theres been others down there with more talent - but none as desperate - none prepared to show a bit of agro - none willing to chase opposition backmen.
When available he is our best option @ FF - because he is a lightning lead and a pretty good grab for his size.
We just need to get it down there fast and keep Harpo Marx out of his way.
I for one am wrapped he is playing on for another couple - hope he has better luck with injuries

Two explanations:

1) I'm wrong again :o
2) He's one of those who doesn't go so well on the road.

I've had a look at the games he played this year, and I saw him play against the Kangaroos (where he wasn't Robinson Crusoe in being ordinary), Collingwood (where he was very, very poor, didn't put in a second effort all night and capped it off by being reported), and Hawthorn (where he was poor again).

In those games, Carey, Stevens, Johncock, Schuback and Skipworth all provided much more energy and committment than Welsh did.

It may be unfair to judge a guy on 3 games, but Welsh was poor in the games I was at this year in terms of forward line pressure.

As you said - I think the whole team has looked somewhat unenthused this year - so maybe this is a reason for your perception. Squelshy is a good medium size forward who is too quick for the tall defenders and too big for the smalls...but if he is the "best" fwd we have in the side - he WILL struggle because he isn't good enough to bare that responsibility. We always get best value out of Scott when the other fwds are firing and he only attracts the oppositions 2nd or 3rd best defender.
Scotts form his highly dependent on having a solid fwd line around him..here's hoping Henschel/Perrie/maybe Watts and some recruits can contribute next year.

Well, looks like you've cornered the 12-16 female market...

Good news he has signed on, I've always said he is a 50 goal a year forward, and if you work out his average this year (2.25) and multiply it by 22, it comes to 49.5 goals for the season. :)

Happy with his comments at the end too.

Also, have Bode, Reilly, etc ... ;) What other [insert player here]_girl usernames do we have? Stevo & Gags may soon be exstinct though.

Hmmm

I would hope its performance based. I was surprised to read about his desperation as I hadnt noticed it. I always say he has a heart like a pea but I hope he proves me wrong.

He did seem freer without Carey in the last 7 games maybe he is a poser and needs the attention.

As a forward pocket yes as a full forward probably not ..I like my FF to kick 65+ a year and I dont see him doing that.

No I am not a fan of his and I really wish the forward line was better

My 2004 forward line would have been Carey FF Burns Fp Perrie Fp

Stevens CHF Welsh HFF Stiffy HFF

Then again what do I know

If I banned people for ever stupid comment, there wouldn't be anyone left (including me) ... though granted nicho is more comical than magical.
