Welsh commits for another two years
Crows leading goal kicker Scott Welsh has re-signed with the Club until the end of the 2006 season. Welsh who led the Club’s goal kicking in 2000 with 47 majors, again proved to be the main avenue to goal in 2004, kicking 36 goals, nine ahead of Wayne Carey, despite the fact that he was sidelined with injury for six matches throughout the season.
Originally from West Adelaide, Welsh was a member of the 1999 Kangaroos premiership team before being traded back to his home state to continue his AFL career with Adelaide. He played all 22 matches in an impressive debut year with the Crows and finished the year atop of the goal kicking with 47, eight ahead of Peter Vardy, and took the fifth most number of marks at the Club with 88.
He played a further eighteen games in 2001 taking his AFL tally to 76, however seasons 2002 and 2003 were forgettable ones as he was hit hard by injury and managed to play only 23 of the 49 games.
After an injury-free pre season, Welsh was looking forward returning to his best form in season 2004, and he had an extra incentive to play well when he lined up against the Kangaroos in round one. Not only was he playing against the team where had been part of a premiership with in 1999, but he had finally reached game number 100.
His ability to provide the Crows with a focal point was well illustrated when he booted 21 goals betweens round 13 and 16. Renowned for his fast leading and accurate goal kicking, Welsh is pleased have re-signed.
“I think the next few years will be very exciting at the Club,” he said. “ We have some very talented youngsters coming through and Neil is a very positive and passionate coach.
“We will work hard over the pre season and look forward to improving next year as a team.”
