Come on loosey that's a bit harsh

some o' the scholo's can play, johnston, stubbs, brain, cole, bray, webster, ranga, both duncens, potter, black, young i've seen a number o' these blokes over a couple o' years n all are genuine footballers along with some others but i do agree that some o' the scholo's are speculative but that is the nature o' the system, i do agree on some o' the coachin issues as well, think rams coaches ok as gws will be but worry about bout some o' the next level n how they r appointed or assessed

i also think t some degree most clubs have swung back t lookin f footballers rather than athletes as was the case late 90's early 2000's n if you can play they will get you fit, give it 3 t 4 years n i believe a number o' these blokes will on afl list & hopefully f the blues or the new south whales, n if good footballers have been missed they should get em selves playin the highest grade o' footy they can N they will eventually be noticed

yeah i agree - you can add a few more to your list as well. I understand the frustration Looseman has though but it goes on in more ways than just the Scholarship programme

Tom Hill (Northern) and Alex Carey to GWS - thoughts?

Carey should have a field day, a strong bodied SANFL experienced player coming back to play against boys in the U18s.

What kind of money would these guys be on?? About time they got the ball rolling with some bigger names. They haven't had anywhere near as much hype as the GC did this time last year with blokes like Dixon, Smith, Daye etc. Good on Tom Hill for persisting and getting a foot in the door. Makes you wonder which other ex-TAC cup players GWS could sign...one name, Kyle Hartigan, springs to mind. If his appeal to get to Werribee falls through today would GWS approach him? Your thoughts FM?

Not sure what sort of money they'd be on Bachar, but they are on two year contracts which makes me think they could be on a bit better deals than a rookie listed player.

Tom Hill's just gotten lucky by the sound of it, good luck to him I guess he's been given a chance that many others would love to have had. Sure beats going to play VFL as he was planning on doing.

I'm not sure how many guys GWS can approach and offer deals to like they have with Carey and Hill. Two might be the limit.

You mentioned Kyle Hartigan - IMO he would be a terrific signing for them, and I think he's a better prospect than Hill. And much like the two who have signed, he is an AIS kid who didn't get drafted. I guess it'd depend how much Kyle pissed in Alan McConnell's pocket while doing his AIS Scholarship though. Carey and Hill must have been favourites of the then AIS coach.

You are right about the lack of hype with GWS, thought there'd be more with Sheeds involved. They seem six months behind where GC were at, and I suspect issues with NSW Scholarships have stalled or impacted the ability of GWS to sign. And add to that they don't seem to have a recruiting manager as such.

Harsh? Aren't I just saying what is probably true?

If Alan McConnell didn't like Hill and Carey do you think they would be at GWS?

Footy is full of people in places because of who they know, or who they impress. Funny GWS sign two players and they just happen to be ex-AIS players, coached by the bloke in charge of GWS. Hundreds of other kids out that weren't drafted who they haven't contacted.

Yep that applies to AFL clubs also that take on guys from affiliated VFL sides, not always the next best player in line just what and who they know and as a rookie drafted player keeping them in the VFL system.

who are inside footy kidding with their tac cup preview re gws, players to watch "impossible to say" how about hill & carey for a start, then the other ais guy's stubbs & stevens or mention a couple that may of played seniors last year etc

Could o' written a little on each o' those guys very poor effort from inside footy may just save the $$$ & get my updates from BF

from the finals i watched last year there were a couple o' good young blokes on each team so you would think that some one at IF would have plucked 1 t talk about

Pies have 4 Players in the Side from there NSW Scholarships:

  • Jarrad Witts
  • Nick Perry
  • Micheal Hartly
  • Adrian YAKIMOV

Does anyone seen these kids play?

Sorry lads been offline a bit lately as had a heap on with work / home.

personally am rapt Hill and moreover Carey get a go up at GWS - Carey will end up like Barlow and these other guys who come into the system later.

Anyway am fired up about Saturdays game out at Blacktown and am aiming to head out there.

Anybody else in?

Two points for clarification please.

First, does anyone have at hand the complete list of the GWS squad plus any alignment for any of those players to other AFL clubs through the NSW scholarship scheme.

Second, do those players who are on scholarships and wish to remain with GWS, have the capacity to have a deal done where the original club they were aligned to does a deal with GWS.

I think under pre-GWS they did'nt have to move to the club of their alignment but could have taken their chances in the open draft?

Any additional info would be appreciated.

yeah saw the game on the weekend. Carey was very strong at the clearances and his disposal was more efficient than vs Nthern but he needs to be benchmarked against the strong sides and to do well to be any chance. Personally I think he will be one of the GWS players signed.

Anderson put in another solid performance and Bruce was strong - he was ok vs Knight as well. Hartley didnt do much nor did Perry. GWS still have quite a few out unfortunately so not seeing them at their best. Hill out for year as well I think.

I went to the game and can only give you an opinion of a footy fan (not an expert) who is hampered by a lack of in-depth knowledge of the GWS players. We fought it out, helped by having a reasonable wind in the last quarter. In the last quarter we also got first to the ball more often.

Earlier we tended to play from behind and had trouble in covering players when the Rebels had the ball. We appeared to me to lack the ability to run or break the lines. A lot of this is due to an inability to hit our targets, particularly with handball. We handball a lot to little effect. We also seem to lose our footing too often.

Carey and Stubbs appeared to be the most prominent to me. Other than those listed amongst our best; I thought Flagg showed some get up and go, Ferguson battled hard at full-back and Hartley at full-forward tried hard (at times). He has a decent kick and if he can get it more often he could be a strong target.

In Summary, we appear to be still coming together as a 'team' especially on the field, but there is certainly a lot of spirit there already

While your on the topic.... :)

How have Sam Martyn and Aarond Duncan been?

Saw a report that Martyn went pretty well against Bendigo. Duncan played BP against Western Jets and did enough for coach to give him votes. Not a lot of disposals but pretty solid. Is a good player. There is fair bit of discussion on Western Sydney Board on BF about players and gws etc

Just wondering what people think of the Pies NSW Scholarship Kids in the GWS TAC Side are going?

out at the national champs watching NT vs Tas and then this avo the NSW game.

Hartley ok for me - really lacks the mobility but he is a huge specimen. trouble is the delivery to him aint great so if in a better side but go a bit better.

Perry I think convert is right.

Yakimov is inj but is the best of the lot from a coll perspective.

be interested in convert opinion but Webster and Kickett the two i really like. webster a great looking athlete who could play a range of roles. kickett has tricks....lots of them
