Just going "one week at a time" is what they claimed we were doing mid-year when we were doing things like losing to Richmond. I distinctly remember Adam Kelly being on 5AA before that game and spouting how their selection policy was based around "the best side to win this week".

It largely felt like an excuse to stick with what we'd already been doing. Nicks seems big on the work harder, not smarter method.
Funny you mentioned that - I today recalled the exact same quote in the Preview thread haha.

Made my blood boil at the time and I'd be surprised if anything's really changed since then.

When pressed about Dowling not getting MID minutes near his debut…

Adam Kelly said words to the effect of:
“Yeah we only look at one game at a time, we’re not worried about the future”

Speaks volumes of his and Nicks’ mindsets. The sooner both of them are gone the better.

They sacked the forward scout.

It's like golf, if you focus on what you need to score, you invariably stuff up. Just have to concentrate on executing the next shot.
that's all well and good if you have solid fundamentals.
However if you are a bit of a hack, it doesn't really help focusing on the next shot and telling yourself 'it'll work next time'....you're just as likely to duff it again. You probably need to change your technique...maybe get a few lessons.
Instead of taking his medicine and getting back to the fairway, Nicks has been hacking his way through the trees.
Sure, 1 shot will come out nicely and we start feeling pretty good, and give him a clap, and use it as justification to come out again next weekend, but ultimately he's stilll playing off double digits, and we are hoping for a 68.

Don't kill my analogy!!

Although, you should never change your technique during a round. Thats what the practice fairway is for. Hopefully Nicks has learnt a bit during the off season although Murph made the squad again, soooo...

I picked it last week when Murphy was judged BOG in the trial ressies game

Its like a red rag to Nicks who can use it to justify picking him

Luckily our off season was a great recruiting one

Otherwise..........

One game in we've seen an actual change.

Curtin wasn't subbed off. He had indifferent trial games and a poor first half. Yet he wasn't omitted initially or subbed off at the first opportunity. Hopefully we're letting him find his feet, prepared to ride out a few flat spots.

Walker was subbed off. We've talked about the need to rest Tex in previous seasons, but haven't actually practised what we preached. Sensible to rest him whenever we can.

I mean, for even mediocre coaches both of these decisions would be absolute no brainers. So not a cause for celebration necessarily but a major leap forward for Nicks.

He's either learning some basic common sense or has learnt to listen.
