A survey was done in Melbourne last week of what a 2 Adult 2 Kid family needed to do OK, 150K was the answer

That explains alot. I have a friend at work who is on $200K and I can't get $35 out of him for a bet we had. He cries poor. He has a wife and 3 kids....so I guess maybe he's just scraping by ;)

why don't you use your "extra" time in something constructive like learning a language or some sort of online education >,>

when the broom comes ....probably good to be prepared

If I used my extra time constructively by doing online training etc I'd blow my cover. My computer screen is highly visible to passers by so I need to make it look like I'm working. I probably only spend about 5 minutes a day on the internet at work, as it would be too obvious.

Honestly there is a perception that I'm doing a good job. When something is asked for, I deliver. The thing is because I'm not just dealing with one manager but many levels of management, they all assume that I've got more things going on than I do. They come and say "I know you're busy but can you....." and I say, "I'll see what I can do, I can't make any promises". Then when they get it promptly, they think I've done them a favour. My job is completely Adhoc, I don't have set things to do. I basically just have to make sure my team delivers.

I had a temp job like that once...I worked at a place for a week where I had to modify the formatting of some Word and Excel documents - easy stuff which I could have knocked over in about 2 hours. But instead I had to find time to kill 35 hours. The problem was I had no internet access (and my screen was visible to one other in the office through half-open blinds; even though she never really paid attention) so spent alot of time just flicking through papers and doing nothing.

I had my own office and got paid $20 an hour which wasn't bad on the surface. But it was a hard, hard earned $20 - I'd rather do something. If I didn't have a 1 hour respite where I went for a walk outside I would've gone mad!

Getting concerned now. Had a mini restructure and got a new manager on Thursday. He sits right by me. The old one sat very far away and never came by.

He's going to start asking questions soon about what I do because he has a "vision" for my team. I won't know what to say. Friday was a killer. I had meetings from 8.30 til 10.30 and for the rest of the day I had no work. I think I should be doing something but I don't know what. Unless something comes up, on Monday I only have about 10 mins of work to do and maybe one meeting.

I have a weekly meeting with my team on Fridays which he will be attending, and he mentioned that he wants us to go around the table and discuss a few "wins" we had for the week. I'm screwed. The job I do requires someone who is proactive and creates their own work by implementing improvements etc. I'll never be like that, I'm too lazy. I can't make work for myself, I just don't care enough.

I wish I had a job that had set tasks, I'm better at that as I have no choice but to do them...but those jobs don't pay well.
