he doesn't bat there, in case you haven't noticed.

His form dip is mildly concerning at most. No way should he be dropped, and no way will he be dropped before the knockout stages, if at all.

A number 3 averages 24 is over 18 months is only mildly concerning??

I guess we are just going to have to agree to disagree ok that one then.

hasn't played enough ODI cricket in that period to get a good read.

You can pluck as many random periods as you like to find the lowest average, but it won't change the type of player he is.

Thanks Shane.

Keep at it you might get a 50 in the next 3 years without being an absolute hack in the process!

according to stats posted by someone else above, averages 31 striking at 97 in the last 12 months.

Not exactly a hangable offence is it?

I'd hardly say that his runs over the last 18 months is random stats. I would have thought that's a pretty good indication of his recent form, more so than his career stats.

Stop the press he has averaged 30...

In other news Finch is averaging about 50 in that time, Warner in the 45 area, Faulkner about 50, Smith about 50+....

But yipee our number 3 is averaging 31! Thats worse than Bailey!

Totally different roles, Maxwell had mostly batted at 6 to 8 and has a strike rate of 120. If he were batting at 3 with those stats he wouldn't be there long.

Agreed and yet Maxwell (rightly so) has been told Off for it. At the same time our great Watson gets a free ride

Totally agree about Warner for some reason People talk about him like he is one of the best ODI players in the world the guys record is poor but no one ever questions it he is the most overrated ODI player in the world.

Watson was out best opener in the short form and they moved him to number 3 cause they wanted both Finch and Warner in the team and the selectors where to gutless to make a call on 1 of them.

I've always been curious about Watson's move to 3 in the one day team. It made no sense to me, except that the selectors didn't think that they had a natural no 3 in the team and wanted Warner as opener in both forms regardless of output in one of them.

Was Watson moved from opener during the time Arthur and Clarke were both selectors?

Watson's best record in the test team was as opener too, but once Kat was dumped, Watson fell apart as an opener in test cricket and eventually got moved from there too, but that has always been more understandable.

Not acceptable, regardless.

Definitely not. He's batting at 3 and he is one of our most experienced players. The expectations on him are rightly higher than for the players who are not used to playing at this level and at this level of pressure. If he is going to coast along doing next to nothing at 3 (I'm not saying he's meaning to, he is well out of form) it is of no use to the rest of the team.

Thing about Watson he rarely goes cheaply - get to 20 it seems regularly but just as rarely above 30

So he should be batting at 6 then and stop whinging when he isn't in the top 3. The bloke has an ego the size of the Grand Canyon despite being utterly hopeless apart from a purple 12 months.

He's doing well to have an average if over 40 for the ten or so years he's been playing for Australia for just one purple patch that lasted 12 months... Must have been some 12 months!!

The issue is his current form, his career has been terrific.

Terrific, oh please. He has been very good in ODIS....but it is 2015, it isn't 2011. Thats the problem. Past it, and the self absorbed ego Watson shouldn't even be in the squad!

You just said he was utterly hopeless except for a 12 month purple patch? Now you admit he has been very good? Your all over the shop.

I never argued that he wasn't past it, in fact I've been saying exactly the same thing, but to say he's only ever had 12 months of good cricket shows you really don't know a lot about cricket, or you don't think before you type.

And yes, I would say he's had a terrific ODI career up until the last 18 months. An all rounder with an average over 40 and a sr around 90 is terrific.

I just can't understand the eagerness to drop a proven ODI matchwinner, who has won a world cup, repeatedly performed under pressure on the biggest stage in this format after 2 games, one where he got a rip snorter first ball, and the other when he was 3rd top score in a shit total.

Fascinating. Was that in 2003 when he was replaced by Harvey, or in 2007 when he sat on the sidelines all tournament?
