In reality we need a good spinner. Lyon should have been persisted with. However next ODI series we should explore other options, I think Agar would be a good option.

Maybe you could start a different thread on this? It will get lost in all the Watson v Watson junk, and it's a worthwhile topic.

It's a World Cup. We're not picking a kid because he might turn out okay in time. We pick a side to win the World Cup.

The same argument has been used for Watson, it was basically the point of my post. He is consistently inconsistent. I would back Marsh to have a greater impact than him right now.

Watson and Marsh remain very close. Yes, Watsons form over the last 18 months had not be good but he has not played a lot of ODI cricket due to injury and has a terrific career record.

Marsh has been solid, but hasn't exactly set the house on fire and his very recent form has not been great. Watsons average for the WC is 30 and Marsh's 10. I'm glad Watson got the kick in the arse and was dropped but I'm also glad that we are giving him another shot, and he took it this time. Let's hope the form continues.

A lot has been said of Watsons form, but Marsh has averaged 10 in the World Cup. If Marsh had performed well himself he could have kept Watson out of the side. Watson took his chance yesterday.

Watson bowling looks to be very pedestrian, hasn't been the same since his latest injury set back. He needs to get his mojo back on that front as a good 5th bowler is needed in this WC.

When it comes to World Cups, I lean toward experience.

Watson has only batted well in one match though.

This could go around in circles...

He's safe for another 3 years now in all forms of the game

In fairness, he's been starved of opportunities. He's been smacked a bit early but he hasn't had the opportunity to fight back because the game finished so early.

Same with his batting to a degree, he had one game where he faced about 9 balls and got out on the last ball of the innings going the slog. He could have protected his average by being cautious, but he didn't.

They're significantly different circumstances to what Watson has been faced with.

They'll play Watson over Marsh this WC finals unless he turns to shit because he has the experience and 'potential' to do something - anything. Then again, Watson realising and playing to his potential, and having it, are almost mutually exclusive, as he's so aptly proven over his career.

I suspect that this will be his last ODI series and I would be surprised if he's included in the next Ashes series.

Which is the point many have been making.

Not good enough for a number 3, if at 6 combined with bowling (as long as that's up to scratch) then there's no problem.

He's got 2 spots he can fit into atm 3 or 6. 1-2 are for Warner and Finch, if he's at 3 then Clarke/Smith take 4-5. If at 6 they take 3-4.

Have no problem with him at 6 tbh if he can bowl and provide late innings impetus, like yesterday alongside Maxy.

I was just fed up with him failing at 3 all summer.
I agree, keep Watson in the side but don't let him bat at 3. He will bat better at 6 and that way we can get Smith and Clarke on through the middle overs.

He is a decent bowler and can bowl 137 at highest which is fast for a allrounder. Faster than the Scottish quicks.

News.com.au's assassination of him continues. Saying he shouldn't bad at 3 cause he got 24 from 23.. going for quick runs so we didn't draw. **** those journalists don't know how to write a proper article and know nothing about the sport they are assigned to.

Their conclusion is right. Their reasoning wrong...
