For the odd innings he's actually needed with the bat to slog at the end, he's not a good steady batter required in case you lose wickets quickly. His bowling is also trash and probably outside the top 20 in Australia.

Watson has the ability to win the match with either bat or ball... whats your point? Marsh hasn't made a run, Warner hasn't made a run against a non-associate side. Finch can only make runs on the MCG. Maxwell can either make 60 off 20 or 1 off of 2. Cummins goes for 6 an over while not threatening to take wickets, usually only picking up slog wickets.

They probably want "balance" to the side. I'm guessing the thinking is having Maxwell and M.Marsh at 5 and 6 doesn't work for balance. Mind you if Watson doesn't enough runs it's a false balance.

Marsh and Watson are very close when it comes to that last all rounder spot. I don't mind either way, as long as Smith comes in at 3.

Watson had been poor over the last 18 months but he has had a fantastic career and maybe deserves another crack before the finals. Marsh has been solid but hasn't been great himself.
