Seems like the days of doing the typical 8 hour 9am-5pm day are over. Employers seem to be demanding more hours, compromising work/life balance.

What hours do you work?

I work 8-5 with an hour break.

Can pretty much take time off when ever we want too.

Edit: Forgot to say Monday to Friday.

technically my hours are 9-5 Mon-fri with an hour for lunch.

But I usually get in around 8 but make sure I leave at 5.

My hours aren't stipulated, but I have to work 40 hours per week.

Generally I work 7.30 - 5, except Mondays where I have to have reports submitted for the eastern states by 7am, so start at 6. Also means getting things ready Sunday evening.

But saying that, my job is very autonomous. I can work wherever I want. At home, at any worksite, or even sitting in a cafe. As long as I turn up to meetings, answer my phone, and have some presence and visibility onsite throughout the week. Pretty lucky in this regard. *Turns channel over to World Cup cricket coverage*

Other side of the coin is that I'm expected to take calls and answer emails 24 hours.

I work 9-5 Monday to Friday, with half hour for lunch.

Have been trying for the last 6 months to negotiate Wednesdays off, would love my week split like that, but no luck-'we're too busy' is the usual answer.

Don't dare tell the boss we're not that busy-I still manage a couple of hours of big footy each day. :)

Dont work with fixed hours which is great

Have some 24/7 responsibilities though and get woken up by the phone a fair bit. Example this satuday morning had a sleep in planned but got a call at 7:30 and had to drive an hour down the highway to a location to sort something out.

I avoid all peak hour traffic though, can work from home (like today) and dress casually in the office which is a major A+++++++++

If I ever have to go back to working fixed hours it will be a struggle

People in offices with an hour for lunch. :D

Come work a tradie's job and see what real work is.

This is one of the best things about my work. Currently sitting in a tshirt and shorts and my thongs off.

I am in academia so can pretty much work whenever I want, but with a young family I keep to 8:30-5:00 type hours.

Uni environment is great because of the flexibility....you have people who bumble in at lunchtime but stay back until 9-10pm, or do half weekdays but put in a full weekend.

EDIT: And the casual clothes at work is a bonus too. Even the bosses wander around in jeans and polo shirts....

Come work a tradie's job and see what real work is.

There is a contstruction site next to my building in the CBD, just looking out the window right now and its good to see all the tradies either sitting on their butts or standing around talking.

That real work certainly looks tough.

Or do you mean real work when you clock off if it gets a bit too hot or 3 drops of rain fall on your head.

Interested to see what some hours tradies work? Been doing bricklaying/labouring for 6 months or so. Just two of us working start at 6:30 finish anywhere from 5:30-7 except early knock off at 4 on Fridays :) generally always work minimum of 6 days but will work 7 whenever possible unless we have something on

7 days a week of laboring - ouch.
