Do you think Tom Scully would still have been number 1 pick if he was able to be drafted last year?

I think Carlton would have taken him with pick 6 considering he's a great inside mid, just what they needed before getting McLean.

I don't think so due to the fact that many people beleive that Yarran might be the biggest thing to come out of the draft. I think Emma Quale predicted him to be the best. I reckon Carlton need good small forwards more than inside mids

Ziebell was drafted as a 17 year old. Last year it was said if he waited until this year he would be a lock for the top 3. Considering he lasted until pick 9 i'd say scully could have gone anywhere from 5-12

Could say the same thing about Sidebottom and a Few of the 17 Year Olds

They have Adam Garlett and Eddie Betts as small forwards. They only really had Judd as an inside mid, and that's a much more important position than small forward.

Plus Yarran will end up as a HFF-cum-midfielder in a few years.

It wasn't a competition, i was trying to make a comparison. Sidebottom wasn't touted to go in the top 5 or 6, Ziebell was. I was trying to compare the strength of the top 10. Last years was seemingly stronger, but we won't know until the current crop play some games

On last years form, as he showed potential I would have had him as anywhere below pick 11, ie. next mid after Sidebottom. I think the other picks ahead of that showed greater form, although it is hard to tell as he was a year younger.

He could easily have replaced any of the mids that went in the first round. Somewhere from 4-8 would have been likely.

You mean 'Jeff Garlett', you may have mixed is name up with 'Adam Hartlett' :p

I giggled. :p

The potential of Yarran as a midfielder was why they picked him, doubt that Scully would change that as they passed over Rich.

Depends on the hypothetical - if youre asking if he was drafted after his season last year I would say top 10-12. Trengove wouldnt have been seen till late in the draft (45+).

But if you put him in last years the draft after the the year he had this year, I would say they would both go in the top 4 - 6.

I agree. Port would've taken him or Trengove. No slight on Hartlett, i expect good things from him.

I think Melb and WCE would have kept their picks but Freo and Port might be the ones who would have swooped. Carlton definately.

Disagree with Freo. They would've gone Rich if they didnt want Hill.

Fwiw, Emma Quayle was asked if any she thought that any of the top draftees from this year would have gone top ten in one of her age blogs and she said that Trengove would have pushed top ten and Scully would have pushed top 5.

I'd say Trengove would have gone at #4 to Port last year if he'd done all that he did this year, last year - I rate him a better pre-draft prospect than Hartlett.

The top 3 would have stayed the same, IMO, and Scully may have gone to any of the teams after that, likely falling no further than North Melbourne at #9.

It stands to reason that if Essendon or Carlton wanted a developed inside midfielder, they likely would have drafted Daniel Rich.

Would Brisbane have drafted Scully ahead of Rich? Hard to say.

Would Richmond have ignored Vickery to go for Scully? Hard to say.

Would North Melbourne have drafted Scully ahead of Ziebell? Almost certainly, IMO.

Because his Dad played for the Blues?

You don't know where Carlton rated Yarran in the last draft.

Barry Prendergast said it was hard to make a choice last year, but this year was easier for him to name picks one and two.

I doubt that we'd change our mind to draft another hard running medium inside midfielder.

In terms of structure, Lucas was a great fit for Carlton.

And Yarran is better than Lucas.
