What is an Emo?

Oooh touchy are we?

Not really. I'm no fan of what is currently called emo, but have plenty of time for bands such as at the drive-in, Sunny Day Real Estate, The Get Up Kids, Jimmy Eat World etc...most no longer exist these days, and most bare no resemblence to what is currently derided as all emo stands for.

I always get confuzzled as to what makes Jimmy Eat World emo. A lot of their songs are energetic and upbeat

And another thing that seperates em from most emo music is that they're good

And a couple more 90's "emo" bands, before the term became what it is today. Note: It wasn't about comb-overs, tight pants and mascara back then. If anything, Greenday played a large part in the modern "Emo" look, and they're not even emo.

That's exactly right. Emo is a derivative of hardcore punk. You could say it's, uh, 'post-hardcore' music.

So SDRE falls under the 'post-hardcore' genre label?

To solve an argument between a few of my mates and I (we are all between 35 and 40)........

What exactly is an emo and how long have they been around?

How do they differ from Goths?

What/Who are emo bands/artists?

Do goths still exist?

Keep hearing about them but cannot get a definitive answer?

Any help would be appreciated.

Sunny Day Real Estate came up with a very original post-hardcore meets emocore at an indie rock show sound. This inspired a spawn of imitators even more shameless than the Fugazi and Quicksand clones. Which leads one to observe: post-hardcore emerged when the hardcore scene tired of the same seven-year-old sounds inspired by a few innovative hardcore bands. A few innovative post-hardcore bands come out with a totally new sound out of nowhere (Fugazi, Quicksand, SDRE, Drive Like Jehu), and spawn legions of imitators. Basically straight out of Thomas Kuhn's theories...

Good Charlotte arent Emo. Anyway emotional music ay, so mant bands have emotional songs. Now im listening to stop crying your heart out by oasis and i reckon that its a pretty emotional song, and oasis have alot of songs like that so why arent they called emo. Or are you only emo if you wear black clothes and all that. What about the music.
