What is the matrix?

I watched this fillum the second time the other night and am still not sure what the matrix actually is.

Is it a state of mind, a computer program or just...just...well nothing at all?

Can anybody shed any light on this mystery?

Supposedly, the matrix is the computer that controls our lives. Anything we eat, drink, smell etc is a product of the computer controlling and telling us what to taste, see etc

I think thats the general gist of it

ah.. yeah, its the computer program that creates this fake world we live in... everything we see, feel, hear, taste... is generated by this software..
