We have a lot of very young posters on this board and some of us older posters probably take for granted some of the things we have seen and that ALL our supporters either would have seen them or at least should know about them.

Well i believe they should know about them, as they are what our club is about, they are a part of our history.

There was a comment on another thread the other day that just absolutely blew me away.

History is a load of crap.

Now i have edited out the majority of the post and taken it out of context but never has a more false claim been made.

The history of our club is what made it what it is today and the history we make from now on will also make up a part of what it is in the future.

Anyway i thought we could share some of the things that we have seen our club go through or incidental incidents that many of our younger posters may not even know about.

Please don't hog the events and list numerous events in the one reply but maybe just share one thing and hopefully some of the younger posters might have some questions to ask.

1. In a literal sense? and 2. really? lol

Yes in a literal sense.

Our coach was Des Tuddenham who we had recruited from Collingwood as a captain coach and he said at training that if we were going to play like children he was going to treat us like them.

So the players were forced to crawl around the boundary at Windy Hill on their hands and knees.

First Essendon game was in 1997. Pre-Season game against the Hawks at Waverley. Lloyd took an absolute f-ing screamer.

Went to 2-3 games a year between 97 and 2001. From 2002 onwards I've gone weekly. Since 2002 I would've attended a total of 130 Essendon games give or take. So I've got a fair idea of what I'm talking about in regards to our recent history ;)

I'm not a Bombers fan, but i have seen sheep eating your grass to save on mower bills. I think Sheedy got the idea from the move The club.

Well I went to my first game in '93.

Vs Brissy in Round 5 or 6. I remember the teams coming out and then I fell asleep and woke up at home. Must have been because we won by 100 points :p

Hope this list isn't too long Mervyn but my most vivid memories include Boris Bewick kick 9 against Geelong at the 100 years game, Michael Long do his knee twice (My fave player), Lloydy hit the scene kicking 7 against Adelaide at Optus Oval, Lloydy kicking 100 twice, Hirdy's famous last qtr against West Coast.

I've seen our club hire a Helicopter to hover over Windy Hill to dry out the ground, especially the centre square.

It was prior to a game vs Nth Melbourne (from memory) and we needed to win to make the finals, which we did.

we do have to remember that the post was by a hawthorn supporter. i doubt any essendon supporters would feel that way.

I remember when Gazza Moorcroft took that absolute screamer that won MOTY in 2001. and I loved that Massive brawl between us and the Hawks at the 'G in 05 I think

- The Windy Hill brawl in 1974. It happened in front of me, but unfortunately, I saw mainly the back of the the police horses.
- The game against Carlton in 1975 was the roughest game I have witnessesd and somehow Carlton managed to kicked 14 goals in the second quarter.

That was a cracker, I believe it was '91 and Kickett took a mark on the defensive goal line to keep us 1 point ahead!

I'm not one of the younger posters but only moved to Aus in 2000 from Scotland & didn't really get into Aussie rules until 2004 & became a Bombers member in 2006 so don't know a lot of the history but love reading stuff like this. :thumbsu:

Saw my first game about Round 6 in 1957, not that I remember anything but climbing around and just about breaking my nose. Started going regularly in 1959 at the age of 6, saw my first GF in 1962, suffered through the early 70s, then got involved in local footy for about 10 years.

I've seen 6 premierships in person and 4 losing GFs.

Will never forget Greg Anderson running almost the entire length of Waverly with the ball only to kick a point running into an empty goalsquare.

It was blowing an absolute gale that day - we hung on just to beat Carlton - Jezza was coaching the blues at the time.

The other ealry memory was going to Windy Hill (one of the very few occasions as I lived interstate). We played and lost to North (Krakouers killed us). But I remember a huge bralw in fornt of me and Salmon walked through the pack parting the sea - his head stuck out of the pack. You knew he was tall when you saw that.

I remember and miss the old scoreboard at Windy Hill.
Stank like urine tho.

We had reserved seats for years in an open air stand at Windy Hill. I remember some media i think commentators sitting at the back of the stand on a concrete platform. Pretty boring I know but just thought it worth mentioning as open air type stands are very rare these days. Paul Salmons parents sat in this stand too.

Not just a Bombers thing but what about the short fat guy who seemed to be at every game walking around the boundary selling, "peanuts, peanuts".

Not just a Bombers thing either but young posters would not have seem the way the cheer squad used to raise money by walking around at half time with a big blanket and the crowd throws coins at them. Wonder why they don't do that anymore.

Bit like Windy just 10 years less in terms of footy years.

Perhaps an incident I'm sure only those there would remember happened at a practice match at Footscray in 1996.

Stinking hot day and roughly 50 people watched the game, but, Sheedy's one-liner as he stormed onto the ground was something to behold: "Where's my f'n computer" as he made a beeline to poor Peter Somerville.

I can't remember which was my first game, but I remember watching us play at Windy Hill against Geelong. We were playing in REd shortss, Timmy Watson was a teenager and Simon Madden was second ruck to Crackers Keenan. I think I'm showing my age!

Sure was and he actually rammed into the goal post as he took the mark in a desperate attempt not to concede.
