I'm heading over to Melbourne next week for 4 days and want to check out a few things (apart from the WCE vs Bulldogs game) in my spare time.

Has anyone been on a MCG tour and can recommend it? Or would the AFL tour at Docklands be more interesting?

Any Suggestions on places to visit will be appreciated :)

where to eat (life's too short for maccas, etc)

big breakfast of bacon, eggs, mushrooms and tomato at Mario's or Joe's Garage, on Brunswick St. or if you like views, a bowl of porridge, overlooking the Yarra, hits the spot at Blue Train Cafe in Southbank.

explore the little laneways in the CBD. maybe pick up some funky jeans from 285 Cyberia or a nice knit top from Calibre, both on Little Collins St. For lunch, head down to Degraves Lane or the adjourning Centre Lane for some nourishing soup or foccacia from any of the little eateries there; Jungle Juice/Hell's Kitchen is particularly recommended. Or if asian is your fancy, head to Chinatown - Kum Den or Camy's Shanghai Noodles are excellent, and cheap. if you're willing to brave the lunchtime crowds, Nudel Bar on Bourke offers far and away the best Laksa Lemak in town.

or you could head down to Fitzroy or Acland st for lunch. nice spots there are Chinta Blues (Acland), Cicciolina (Acland) and Greasey Joe's.

if you're cashed up for dinner, Momo's (Collins St) is a fantastic restaurant, with a blue swimmer-crab rissotto to die for. Becco (Crossley Lane) is the epitome of the modern italian restaurant in Melbourne. for cheaper options, the iconic Pelligrini's (joined to Becco) or Italian Waitors Club has good hearty Italian fare. Automatic, at Crown Casino, is owned by the same people as Blue Train and has more or less the same fare, although it's slightly better, and you can't complain about tasty wood fired pizzas from about $10-$12.

you can't go past any of the pubs on brunswick st , but esp. the Standard (can anyone finish those fish and chips??), Napier, or the Rainbow (which has a restaurant-trained chef in the kitchen, called Peach@the Rainbow. Also has good live music).

Bars are Melbourne's raison de'tre. I always take visitors to the Melbourne Supper Club on Spring St which IMHO is by far the best wine bar in Melbourne. The Melbourne Wine Room, on Fitzroy St, is also good, with over 400+ wines on their wine list.
You should have a pot one afternoon at the Espy in St. Kilda.

Have supper at the Supper Inn (Celestial Ave, Chinatown) or the 24-hr Stalactites (Lonsdale St) for some souvlaki to get the liver working again :)

oh, and the best toilets are located on the 35th floor of the Hotel Sofitel, Collins Place, it's opened to the public. go up there and take a leak whilst enjoying panoramic views of the CBD from the floor to ceiling windows.

Try Dandenong. It's a cultural melting pot, and being outside Lonsdale St McDonald's is an experience you will never forget. Of course, there is always me.

Apart from that, Melbourne doesn't much to offer. Except for being the nations sporting capital, having an entertainment complex the size of Crown Casino right on the Yarra, and a multitude of restaurants, cafes, shows, and night-spots.

;)

ROFLMAO sorry Go Eagles, I was just picturing you in that top. :D

Take the MCG tour, I am sure you would enjoy it, do the Docklands as well, OH & if you want to see the best HALL OF FAME, head out to Windy Hill.;)

Yep have to agree with that - fantastic views at night :D

I recommend the MCG Tour and the Sports Museum which is there also. Southbank is always a great place to have a walk and a coffee. Crown Casino is also great for entertainment and food. The Rialto Observation Deck at dusk is fantastic.

the NGV on Russell St has closed, as at 1 July 2002. the Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia will open in Federation Square in Spring of this year.

if you like art, the melbourne museum is worth checking out. it currently has an exhibition of Italian masterpieces. also, the top end of flinders lane has many small art galleries that are well worth a look.

Sussudio - you are right on the money; you obviously have an envious lifestyle! Except give Joe's Garage a miss for breakfast and try Babka or Retro. :)

Great little piece there Sussudio - do you work for Lonely Planet?

So far I've decided I'll go on a MCG Tour & maybe Docklands if I've got the time.

Do a bit of shopping in the CBD

Win next years holiday at the Crown Casino

Take a leak on the 35th floor (lets hope I get the right building :D )

Avoid Windy Hill, bogans, Eddie Maguire, granny knitted ****y tops & George Michael

A little tip - don't eat at any of those take away shops near Swanston street and so on. It's crawling with flies in the food cabinets. I rarely, if ever, eat out.

Go on the "City Circle", by all means!

It's a free tram that encircles the city, and all of the major historical landmarks and monuments. Very fascinating...

Plus, if you need to go anywhere else in the city, most of the major tram lines and bus routes are connected to the City Circle route, as well as the Spencer Street and Flinders Street stations...

Comes highly recommended by me-- as my wife and I did this today, as a matter of fact...

Cheers,
William
