What to do at LAX

I was just there last week. Sorry for the bad news but it's just like any other airport. LAX has a handful or restaurants, bars and shops but that's about it. I was there for just a couple of hours and got bored. I'm not sure if you'd have time to be able to get out and see anything because LAX is a while away from areas such as Santa Monica, Hollywood, Anaheim etc.

My now-fiance and I copped this back in April.

If you got through Customs as quick as we did you'll have closer to 8 hours of downtime than what you think.

How much are you carrying? If it's only a backpack, consider a cab out to a place of interest, depending on the time of day. Traffic though, is a ****er, so be mindful of this when planning anything.

If you choose to stay at the Airport, there's good shopping and drinking to be had, especially if you're a fan of US sports (subject to the progress of the Dodgers, as it's the NBA/NHL off-season at the mo). Plenty of bars that sell beer other than Miller & Bud, some decent craft/micro beers to be had. Names escape me, but you don't have to drink the mass-produced swill. Plenty of sport to be watched too at these bars.

Most terminals have fold-out computers for Net access, and the cost is pretty cheap.

People watch - some decent girlies passing through the airport, maybe strike up a random airport conversation - the Aussie accent is regarded nicely.

Have plenty of $1's and perhaps $5's on hand - you may be required to tip more often than desired. I think the gratuity is in the range of 17-18%.

All else failing, sleep with your possessions close.

Where else are you flying to warrant such a monster layoff? We initially had a 3hr layff, but heard horror stories about customs lines and elected to for a big layoff. Jetlag becomes a factor too - throw in a few bottles of water between ales.:thumbsu:

All the best.

Not much. It's just like every other airport. Duty free shopping, eating, sleeping, looking around can only get you so far. I agree with the guy who said take a cab somewhere even if it's for 2-3hours or so.

Ive got a similar problem with a 7 or 8 hour stop over in Honolulu in Nov. Not sure what to do with my time either. Can hardly be bothered going anywhere since Ive been there twice in the last 18 months so have seen it all. I might just go and find a beach to sleep on.

Nine hours is a long time but good in that you'll have time to do almost anything. Maybe get on a bus at LAX and go down to Santa Monica which isn't too far. Go get some lunch, do some shopping. Then there's Manhatten Beach which is just down the road.

If your looking for some excitement LAX is very close to South Central. Now that could be fun.

But seriously you can get a bus to anywhere from LAX and with 9 hours you can almost go anywhere.

Ive stayed at LAX hotels and been to Santa Monica on a public bus numerous times. I don't think it was even 20 minutes away (if my memory serves me correctly).

Hi,
With that much time you could do a quick tour.
We were there 2 years ago, and there is a tour company run by an ex-pat Aussie.
If you contact them before you go, tell them what you would like to see, then they can organise a 4/5/6 hour -, and you can take your luggage and leave it in the car/van they use.
Get to see stuff you want to see-Venice Beach, Los Angeles, Outlet Malls.
Don't waste your time waiting at the airport,
