What will Cousins cost us?

yes it was i agree. An undermanned collingwood had more centre clearances, more inside-50's, and more scoring shots, but that's okay because the previous week, collingwood were the youngest team to win a final since brisbane in 2000, and we all know what they did the following three seasons.

Also, the loss to st.kilda meant that collingwood finished 6th, which is where hawthorn finished last year. They went on to win this years premiership. Having the earlier pick for cousins is just an added bonus, but we'll all just have to wait and see on that.

Unless sources at the Pies are lying for some perverse reason, the pies have pulled out. Can't name sources but the person heard it first hand from a person who would know.

It ties in with what Nixon said.

What's all the hype about? He's a 29 year old who's had a year out of the game with drug issues, he hasn' t played footy in 12 months, so fitness will be a issue. He's getting on as well so injuries are a major concern. Especially those hammies. Look, i think he'll be handy, but not worth all this hype. It's not like Daniel Rich is coming to our club

Well prior to being de-registered he was one of the elite midfielders of the competition, a Brownlow medallist and premiership player, so I think that justifies the hype. Even at 30 years of age he still has the capability of playing a high standard of footy for a couple of years at least.

Don't see why fitness or injuries would necessarily be a problem either. He was always one of the fittest players in the comp. and has been training for the past few months. The year off may have actually done him good and helped his body/hamstrings recover.

It will certainly be interesting to see how things pan out over the next few weeks. After thinking we had no chance of getting Cousins a couple of weeks ago, it appears we are now well and truly in the mix. Hard to know what to believe with all the stories flying around though.

Nope. So things will certainly heat up if and when they do
... decision next month according to the AFL website. It's interesting that a club has indeed put forward a proposal re: cousins. Looks like one club is serious, two others are sniffing around. Whoever gets him, if it's on the back of the proposal, looks like they've really done their homework.
And i'd bet my left teste that it's the Swans who are the non-victorian club who've expressed inerest

By that rationale, I suppose you would give Geelong this year's premiership cup eh?

Good to see you have moved on from your loss to us anyway:D

But since it was opposites day afterall surely points were golden, GOLDEN I SAY!

Anyway, if the AFL sign off on Cousins registration while involving this supposed plan in their reckoning you'd tend to assume that any club besides the one which lodged the plan would be the one Cousins would end up at, because otherwise the AFL would probably be rather pissy and vindictive at the club who then took him.

No matter the cost it will be worth it.
He has the potential to be one of the biggest good news stories in the history of the game.
We just had a St Kilda legend over as a guest speaker for a work do and he feels if Couzo can produce good footy, not great footy like in his peak, he will be a great assett to have around. There is always that tiny bit of risk of a relapse but hey sometimes you have to take a risk/chance in order to win.
If all goes well with him and he plays and plays well he will bring much experience on and off the field. The players around him will lift and you will get increased membership and crowd numbers.
The question isn't what will he cost, it is what value will he be to the club.

Cousins is past his peak and i think he's not going to be as good as you all think he's going to be. He'll be a good pickup but i don't think he'll weave his magic like he did for the West Coke Eagles.

I honestly dont think that he is.
The guy has been a freak player for so many years. He has always been super fit and the talent that he has isn't lost after a year out of the game.
Pretty sure we can put this to rest until he gets cleared to play though.

Yes but you're ridiculously negative, so we'll take it with a pinch of salt.

while im watching this im like thinking the lyrics are like "Ben.....come play for StKilda. Ben.... come play for Stkilda"

I dont have too many doubts about his ability to play good footy, but please refreain from using the words "news stories" , that makes me nervous. ( If we get him. I used to laugh about it when he was at WC).:)

Anyone who was at the Dome in '07 and saw Cuz destroy us after a late start to the season (and his amazing gut-running!) would say his is not past it. Plus he's played about 10 games in 2 years....his body will be fresh and ready to go

If we get him I have no idea how good he will be.

I doubt at 30 that he would replicate his best form, though he might still deliver very good form.

However it is VERY VERY likely that his form would at least be better than what was delivered in 2008 by McQualter, Fiora, Birss, Armitage, Geary, Eddy Gwilt and Jones. Though I might bea bit hard on Jones, but his footskils limit his usefulness.

Like Harvey, or Crawford (or his playing on into 2009 @34) he is a fitness freak and I have little doubt that unless soft tissue injuries strike him down that he can play at least 2 years and probably more.

Also like the above two he is a class player that knows how to read the play and to use the ball well.

With Harvey retired and our midfield already underperforming as a unit in 2008 things were looking quite gloomy for 2009.

However with Ray now aquired (so ditto on it is VERY VERY likely that his form would at least be better than what was delivered in 2008 by McQualter, Fiora, Birss, Armitage, Geary, Gwilt, Eddy and Jones) if we can also add Cousins then our midfield unit looksa lot better....even if Cousins only delivers useful rather than very good games.

Hopefully also Armitage can step up a bit more as he will be in his third year, with Jack Steven graduationg for a few cameo games as he starts to emerge in his first true year (he was bottom age last year), and maybe, just maybe Baker can succesfully come back to provide a tagging option where the tagger can win his own ball.

Goddard too really started to come on in 2008 again post- knee. However Hodgelike he may remain down back setting up play rather than playing as a pure midfielder.

Gram is our midfield wildcard in 2009 along with Ball:

  • Gram showed glimpses of great midfield form in 2008. Hopefully he has learnt from it and can stepp up to more consiteantly good football in this role in 2009. His pace in the midfield can be lethal., and Cousins along with Ball could feed him well.
  • With Bal. we all know that he can bea great in and under player for us with his grunt and class vital at the stoppages. Can he get his body right? That is the $64 question.
So there are lots of ifs and buts but IF they all click:
  • A fit Ball
  • A revitalised Cousins
  • A useful Ray for run
  • A consitent Gram in the midfield
  • A consiteant Dal
  • A stepped up Armo
  • Lenny just being Lenny
  • BJ rulling the back half setting up the midfield
  • And Baes as the tag who can win ball.

From The Australian today:

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,24510148-2722,00.html

BEN Cousins is set to make his much-anticipated comeback with St Kilda next year.
The move will be approved if the recovering drug addict is given the go-ahead to play again by the AFL.

Collingwood pulled out of the race for the former West Coast captain last night.

The 30-year-old will learn next month if the AFL Commission will clear him to return after being deregistered in 2008 for bringing the game into disrepute.

Cousins' manager Ricky Nixon said St Kilda were the one club who had expressed to him their belief that his rehabilitation would be best served by returning to football.

"One club in particular has led the way in talking to us about that and making the playing side of that and his involvement back in the community and with supporters and the club part of his rehabilitation," Nixon told Radio 3AW today.

"We're encouraged by that and the AFL should be encouraged by that."

Nixon said he was not particularly worried that Collingwood's decision could turn other clubs off Cousins.

"You only need one club to play AFL football and at the moment there's at least one who are quite prepared to draft him if he's made eligible to play," he said.

The Magpies told Nixon they had decided not to chase Cousins for a number of reasons, including their preference for younger players, injury concerns and his well-documented off-field issues.

The Magpies had initially been seen as Cousins' most likely destination, primarily because their coach Mick Malthouse was his first coach at the Eagles.

But Nixon said they had not been the preferred option for either him or Cousins.

The Herald-Sun reported today that senior Collingwood officials spoke with Victorian Police Commissioner Christine Nixon before deciding not to pursue Cousins, the 2005 Brownlow medallist.

Ricky Nixon said he was concerned that the police commissioner had refused to publicly clarify if she had spoken to Collingwood or what she had said.

"It leaves it open to innuendo and rumour," he said.

" ... I don't have a problem with Collingwood or any club doing their due diligence.

"In fact, I'd love them to do it and do as much as they can.

"And I'll tell you what, if they want 110 per cent of exactly what Ben's been through and where he's at and what he's been doing the last 12 months they only have to come to my office because we're not going to shirk the issue."

Cousins was dumped by West Coast last year and senior Eagles officials have insisted they have no intention of re-signing him.

Saints officials refused to comment today on whether they were still in the hunt for the midfield star.

Judging by all this, he'll probably end up at the Tigers
I'd prefer it if we got him though :thumbsu:

I hope to god Gardner is still not on your list, those two are drug buddies from the good old Perth days.

Really?? Are you sure?? No one has ever brought this up before. Quick, someone contact the club and let them know.

Thanks Tarquin, you may have just helped the Saints avert disaster!
