The AFL has quite often produced a balls-up when it comes to the father/son draft rules, exemplified by the Bryce Gibbs saga with Adelaide. It was quite ridiculous that one club has one rule (West Coast - 150 WAFL games), another club another rule (Adelaide - 200 SANFL games), Victorian clubs it is different again, etc.

The Brisbane Lions have at least the sons of the old Brisbane Bears and Fitzroy Lions, likewise, Sydney Swans also has its history with South Melbourne, etc.

What will apply to the new teams?

Will the AFL base it on a number of QAFL games, etc?

even more ridiculous given that when Freo joined in 95 they were not subject to the 200 game rule that seemed to be the new rule. They went back to 150 WAFL games and then Port's entrance is, you guessed it 200 games again for father/son. Why? Why do the WA teams get an advantage over SA teams?

The new teams will also have the rule about adminstrator's as well, which is 5 years. Not too much thought given to that by the Crow's heirarchy should have kept Cornes one more year so they could claim Chad and Kane under the rule.

Because the SANFL had 10 teams, the WAFL 8.

The rule would have provided for roughly the same number of players whose sons would be eligible to be taken under FS.

Never heard of that administrator f/s rule. Don't think it exists, although happy to be proven wrong.

Fair enough.

New teams will probably get the same 150-200 game rule for the local comps. Actually would expect them to lower it to 100 as non-traditional AFL areas.

the Administrator rule only exists for the teams who came in from 87 on. For Adelaide it is 5 years of service to the club. It doesn't exist for any Victorian teams. Cornesy bangs on about it all the time. He is still traumatised by the fact his sons play for Port.

Which sounds great in theory, not always sure it works out that well in reality. Given there were/are 12 original VFL teams with a 100 game rule, we should be 50 SANFL games and you should be able to claim anyone born in WA who's old man once wanted to play WAFL :)

1 VFL team per Vic teams = 100 games
4 WAFL teams per WA teams = 150 games
5 SANFL teams per SA team = 200 games
