whats missing

A group, particularly a midfield that lays heavy body and shepherds wouldn't hurt. We're too happy to allow the opposition to carry the ball forwards and we're too happy to allow an even contest, not enough use of the body to take opposition out of the contest or allow team mates out and time with the ball. Get that right and our midfield will be good enough to win games on midfield power alone ah-la west coast when they were playing in grand finals.

Haha! You're having a laugh mentioning a 3rd tall defender - right...?

We've got Bower and Laidler as specialists in this area - one is a top 20 draft pick and the other was headhunted specifically.

Just checking :)

I'd say what's missing most, is self belief.

Now this is something that we never had a problem with in the Golden Years - basically, every single year of the CFC's existence before 2002. Our players had a sense of self-entitlement, an ownership over their role that was unmatched by any other team in the AFL.

The only way I can think of to justify this comment is that no matter how badly we limped into finals, no matter how injury-ravaged our list was, or how lacking in game time our key players were, nobody would EVER take us lightly.

And when they did, they paid for it.

If we can recapture this, then we are well on our way. Of course, it's easier said than done, but every noise the club is making seems to be pointing us in the right direction. Judd's letter to the faithful. The membership slogan - basic, no fuss, and powerful. Ratten invoking the history of our club as a justification of the pressure he'll be under throughout the year...

This club always demands success. Now that we're once again talking the talk of success, here's to us remembering how to walk it's walk!

South Melbourne fan
The president of the Albert Proud trainwreck
Doesn't rate Kane Lucas

Atleast your a Carlton fan, aswell a non Victory hoper which saves you some grace

South Melbourne = Oceania Team of the Century

Albert Proud = had the ability .. just needed the discipline, but I haven't yet given up hope!

Kane Lucas = I rate him, he just needs to improve in a few areas to complete his game and allow him to be a better contributer on field.

I hate the Victory with all my heart and WILL NEVER support that vile club.

Ditto Melbourne Heart.

Carlton were the best NSL team.... but I actually have attended a few SM games in the VPL... watch the final some 3or 4 years ago... just cause I hate ALeague and have too many friend who are diehard SM fans

Was at the game where the Clarendon Street Corner crowd decided to storm the ground... and opposition keeper pushed one of the fans... forgot the opposition... may have been heidelberg

Any talk of another midfielder or forward is redundant. Geelong, Collingwood etc prove that you don't need power forwards kicking bags of goals to win premierships. More decent defenders though would be handy. Oh, maintaining composure and not choking in finals is a fairly important quality to possess which we lack

Well said... bloody well said...

We have the talk... now we need the walk with the swagger of self-assurance that our teams of old used to have.

Getting back all the old champions into the club as staff isnt just about jobs for the boys... it's about having that old swagger around the kids so that it might just rub off onto them as they hang around the old guys.

this post gave me tingling sensations in my asfljajkladfj;fad

While there is a few puzzle pieces slowly taking shape, like a fit CHB and a settled forward line, the real missing link is the culture like Azz said. .. Once you have belief things come together. .. Once you believe in your team mates, thats when blocking and shepherding become second nature. .. I am really starting to think that we just need a convincing win over a team like Hawthorn, on the back of a few wins, to get us there. ..

The self belief thing comes by default when you are one of the best.

We aren't, so don't have the self belief you are looking for.

We get the:

  • quality in the list,
  • team play,
  • hardness
  • we win
Self belief comes after that...

We're missing too many things to mention.

No doubt we're on the right track but we are a fair way off it yet.

On field a few positions need filling and we need improvement from everyone out there on match day. Adding one player won't do it, improving across the board will go a long way to propelling us up the ladder.

The obvious answer is a KPD, a close checking small defender, a medium/tall forward and a classy midfielder, but in reality it goes far deeper than that.

In the coaches box and off the field, structures, coaching and development. I have queries over our development program, but we are no doubt improving in that area. At times we've lacked back-up plans and structures. I also think at times the coaches may have let players off the hook at times and not gone down on them as hard as they perhaps should have. Outside influence from the likes of Alan Richardson and Gavin Brown will no doubt help in this regard.

The above are no doubt lacking, but the most important aspect that we have not seen anywhere near enough is the ability and the will to play consistently as a team. Team discipline, team cohesion and consistent effort must not be underestimated. You can win a premiership without the best team on paper, but you can't get there if you don't have the discipline, the effort and the ability to work as a team. Too often I've seen players not give 100%, whether that be in contests, or something as simple as blocking or sheparding. The players MUST be willing and able to work hard for each other, both on the track and during games.

Without cohesion, without effort, and without the desire to get the best out of oneself and each other, it simply won't matter how good our team is in terms of talent, nor will it matter how we shape up in the coaches box. If the players don't play together as a team, we'll consistently fall short when it matters most.

What we are missing:

1. Strong, agile CHB - who can both blanket and run off his opponent - perhaps this is Watson?

2. Silky, fast, outside midfielder with good disposal - that plays outside the contest and can break the lines and use his speed to break away from the contest and deliver into the forward line with good disposal. Someone like a Danyl Pearce type. Isaac Smith would have been nice to fill this role.

3. A well rounded and mobile in-and-under hard nut - that can dish the ball out while contributing around the ground as a link up player. McLean plays this role well - but there are questions over his durability and disposal. Curnow was recruited for this reason and hopefully he can play this role in McLeans absence (or perhaps even take McLeans position).
