2. Silky, fast, outside midfielder with good disposal - that plays outside the contest and can break the lines and use his speed to break away from the contest and deliver into the forward line with good disposal. Someone like a Danyl Pearce type. Isaac Smith would have been nice to fill this role.

That one is Kane Lucas and he's a much better option than Smith.

I also think at times the coaches may have let players off the hook at times and not gone down on them as hard as they perhaps should have.

Buckley, Dylan.

In the second half of the WA v VM game, Buckley won a contested possession at half back and took off like Simpson down the wing. And hit the forward lace out on his non-dominant side.

Jimmy's son runs 20 metres in 2.84 seconds.

He's as fast as Armfield.
3. A well rounded and mobile in-and-under hard nut - that can dish the ball out while contributing around the ground as a link up player. McLean plays this role well - but there are questions over his durability and disposal. Curnow was recruited for this reason and hopefully he can play this role in McLeans absence (or perhaps even take McLeans position).
This belongs in the rumours thread.

Mclean isn't a bad kick like Bentick or David Clarke.

Curnow might be an inside player like Andrew Krakouer, but the Magpie would be a better kick.

I'll agree with you on the 'may not be a bad kick' - I could be being a tad harsh on Brock.

But the durability point has to stand.

Curnow might be an inside player like Andrew Krakouer, but the latter would be a better kick.

Krakouer is an inside player?

I would have thought he would have been an ideal candidate for the 'silky, quick, outside midfielder' position I stated that we lacked earlier on.

In any event, I don't think Krakouer is the type of player I was referring to when I mentioned a hard bodied, inside mid - such as Curnow.

Yeah that's probably right. He's under immense pressure a lot when he disposes of the ball but his skills are fine most of the time. Really hope he can overcome his injury problems and have a big year.

Krakouer isn't quick.

A few Essendon supporters keep ramming home the point that Leroy Jetta isn't a speedster.

Krakouer looks quick because he has great awareness and can dodge opponents . I believe he's been playing as a goal kicking midfielder like Murphy who isn't fast, but rarely gets run down and tackled. I see Curnow playing inside and outside like Murphy because he has such a huge motor. Might be an in and under, but he can play both roles IMO.

In the loss to Collingwood, Mclean won the centre clearance and showed great awareness to get past the first tackler, but had no runners and support, so he was swamped by three players. Mclean's teammates were at fault for not blocking and getting numbers to the contest.

I would say that Murphy is quick TG, when fit he can certainly break the lines.
Murphy's 20 metre time was 3.00 seconds or 3.05 second.

That doesn't translate into his game because he's a gun who is agile and knows where to run.

Endurance and poise is more important.

JR ran down Ziebell who couldn't beat him on a fast break, but the Roo just pulled up and let Russell slide past him so he could spot up a teammate.

IYO what type of player or players do we need to win our next flag? is there someone on our list that we could develop?
With the new "sub" rule, opposition teams are more likely to rest their BIG, TALL rucks of around 200cms in their forward area.
To answer your question we need to develop a BIG, TALL mobile back pocket/HBF player of around 200cm to mind the opposition rucks in the forward area.
We can't continue to have either Jamison (193cm) Bower (192cm) Waite (194cm) Thornton (192cm) Austin (193cm) or White (190cm) looking after these monsters.
We also don't want to take our big rucks in Warnock, Hampson or Kruezer away from being able to rest in our forward line.
Listening to Ratten, I wouldn't expect too much of Watson this year.
That only leaves one player on our list who fits the bill in size & pace.
Yep! It's O'hAlipin.
We must have him in the defensive area.

The self belief thing comes by default when you are one of the best.

We aren't, so don't have the self belief you are looking for.

We get the:

  • quality in the list,
  • team play,
  • hardness
  • we win
Self belief comes after that...

I like the way you think.

Probably summed up my thoughts without me even having to thunk dem ;)
