Hi guys,

I'm worried. Worried, worried, worried. It gets so bad as I can't sleep at night for worrying. What ails me, you ask? This -

Yep, the navy blues. They really have me worried over here.

You see, I thought the Blues were on the rise. I thought they were "coming". In fact, I thought we all knew they were coming -

And, I thought they were cooking up something good for their supporters. I really did. And so did we all, I thought -

Yep, I really did.

With three #1 draft picks in their side, secured by some really successful tanking for three wooden spoons (Murphy, Gibbs and Kreuzer), and with the great Chris Judd at the helm, secured by some really successful outside the cap payments, the Blues SHOULD be the #1 team in the comp.

No other team has had access to this much "talent", with the exception of the two new clubs, but they are still only new to the comp. Outside of them, no club has had the opportunity to recruit a premiership team, like Carlton has. With the players they've been able to recruit and trade for (not forgetting the magnificent Lachie Henderson of course), the Blues should be an absolute powerhouse.

But, they're not. I note this morning that they lost to the Bulldogs? This is a team who are - unfortunately for them - on the slide. The dogs prelim window is shut now, after successfully making a couple of prelims, and they are going to miss finals, and have to rebuild. That's fine, it's all part of the cycle. And yet, the Blues lost to them? That really gets me worried.

What's going on, guys? Why are Carlton struggling so badly? Is there anything we can do to help? What's going wrong down there?

I think its clear

The VFL Carlton were a powerhouse but they forgot to make the transition to the full time professional AFL. They were surprised to find things didn't work any longer with brown paper bags and the like. They looked for a way to the top without work and a little bit of cheating involved. After all the place is run by crims so its a natural thought process

TANKING was seen as the universal panacea. Murphy, Gibbs and Kruezer would be their new Kernahan et al. Trouble was they didn't understand the effects of introducing a losing mentality. Once there its hard to eradicate. As Melbourne post 64 and Richmond post 80 found you can spend a long time down.

Duritz, the only bit I didn't understand was which bit of this I should worry about?

Apart from having a culture of salary cap cheating, paying off women who their players r*ped, being run by criminally corrupt businessmen and donating guernsies to be draped over the coffins of murderers?

Not much, they are the family club

Unless I have missed something?

They are an okay side. No huge flaws, but no massive upside to take them up to being serious contenders.

They can still hit the Top 4 this year, but it will be reliant on others. If 2012 is like last year, with so many sides dropping off, the Blues can get "best of the rest" by default.

4-6th would be a good result for a team short on depth and desire

Well, don't you feel for their supporters? All that time watching tanking happen, and getting their hopes up, and it's ending up nowhere. Don't you sympathise with all of those supporters out there who thought they were coming?

You may have gone a tad early with this one Duritz. We all want Brissie to thump them next week and send them back to Spoonsville. Don't let us down.

Oh if they don't beat us it'll be a disaster. They absolutely MUST get back on track against our bunch of kids. We're the 2nd youngest team in the comp, we're at the bottom of a rebuild, and we've lost our captain and best player. I'm just glad we'll be able to give them a win to get them started again. Because losing to us would mean things are even worse than I thought. :(

this clearly was the main problem. the cheating issue has been well discussed. the issue of lack of hard work hasnt. look at the last 5 years. flags won by teams who simply recruited well, picked the good apples from the bag, rather than just rely on buying the best apples, or so they thought. as carlton have never had to work, they cant adjust to the modern world. forever to remain irrelevant. and a well deserved position too.

If Carlton don't beat us by 12 goals this week Ratten should offer his resignation. Actually he should regardless of the result, he's holding them back, Elliott would have ****ed him off 18 months ago.:thumbsu:

Duritz, stick to the orb polishing and horse racing you flog

I don't fancy duritz from the next bloke (everyone) as his posting is so reliant on 3 asterisked/2 club mergered flags BUT

BUT

he has a point...

What is wrong with Carlton?

if they don't win the flag this year it will be 1 (paper-bagged) flag in 25 years.

that's pretty shitty for a club as "big" as Carlton

You're right, Christ.

I am worried about it. REALLY worried about it. My worry has gotten so bad that I've taken to drinking beer at night and red wine and having sex with my wife, just to get over the worry of it.

duritz - have you posted in the right thread ?

this thread is about how shit carlton are, not your failing to win the position of mod. thinking about carlton makes any genuine person impotent.

Bring serious for one second, Carlton's problem is obvious, they have too many "outside" players and rely on one or two to get the ball to them. Essendon have this same problem and why both teams have limitations.

in mudheap I doubt 12 goals will be kicked
a waste of time of a game in March

Some good responses coming in here, people genuinely trying to help Carlton identify what the issues are. Very good of everyone to attempt to diagnose what's wrong with this side. I am sure the Carlton folk on the Bay greatly appreciate the diagnoses.

I am really worried that there is a cultural issue, as identified by other posters earlier in the thread, that arises when a team deliberately loses, or "tanks" for a sustained period of time. I am genuinely concerned that this could have such a psychological impact on Carlton people that they now just EXPECT failure, so long have they lived with it.

It might not be completely unlike Stockholm syndrome, where a captive comes to identify with their captor, and often end up supporting them, even loving them. Carlton folk might now love failure, and if they do, it's going to take a long time to uproot such an attitude.
