Quite Simply, when would you first like to see Chris Judd pull on the carlton jumper and take to the field for the first time? NAB cup, or round ONE?

On one hand, you might want him to skip the NAB cup as its only a token event, give him some more time to recover from injury, and give all our fans a real treat in round 1 of the proper season.

On the other hand, you might believe that he needs a warm-up match or two, just to shake off a few cobwebs. Perhaps your just so desperate to see him play you want him to take to the field ASAP, even if that means the NAB cup.

Personally, i'd like to save him for round one, as his pre-season has been shortened in rehab, and i'd rather see him get his first game in peak condition. However, if he is truly 100% and himself and the club want him to play the NAB cup, i'd have no complaints.

What do you think?

Ideally 10 minutes total in the pre-season games. If all goes to plan, we should be up by 60 points or so by half time V Tiges Round, and we should rest him for the 2nd half of that game. Should aim to play a full game Round 2. :)

Id go for round one, the first of the majour season. Let your expensive recruit rest up and get full fitness.

Cliche - the medical staff and match committee will sit down before preseaon games and assess each player individually.Judd is no exception and will go thru this process with is hopefully not playing him until we smash the Tigers Round 1

We have nothing to gain by playing either Judd or Stevens in the NAB cup. I say we give a young guy like Blackwell a crack. :thumbsu:

To a degree I think they kind of need to play to get the others used to working with and around them. The other midfield boys need to know where to be and how to assist them, and it's going to take more than a few games before they all gel together.

I agree with Judd (although a half late in the Nab Cup wouldn't hurt) but Stevens will be back in full training and should be fit and firing come the preseason. After near a year out of the game, he will be rusty and easing him into it in the NAB cup will be perfect opportunity to work him into some form prior to the season proper.

hope we go back to the format of resting Senior players for Rd 1 of the Proper season thats why we never won the preseason much
hope if We lose Rd 1 of Nab cup they play in a practice game out in the country like Balllarat, maryborough of bendigo ;) i been to on back in 1986 v North Melbourne at Maryborough and hamills first year at St Kilda at Bendigo
its a good way for supporters who can;t get to Melbourne much and to show off our new recruites

Bendigo got such a huge ground

Yeah, we used to be pathetic in the preseason comps, and then dominate from Round 1 onwards. Ratten's comments pretty much suggest the pre-season comp is not a priority, and he is focussing on Round 1 only. Management of players fitness and injuries is such a crucial part of the game. No use peaking early and falling in a heap latter on. I just got the impression with Pagan, he didn't really have much confidence in his players. He was basically trying to get every win he possibly could. Ratten knows he has some awesome list talent at his disposal, and is now looking at ways to best develop it, and sustain our intensity over the entire season. His higher possession, more sophisticated gameplan, also shows he has faith in the capabilities of his list. It's a fundamental change. :)

Yes, but wouldn't you think that they should have a run or two prior to the season, just to blow the cobwebs out. I'd give them at least 1 practice match prior to round one.

Although, playing Richmond in round 1 is tantamount to a practice match anyway.

Depending on how their fitness is going in a few weeks time, I'd say yes to both of them in practice matches but not NAB cup unless they really need a good run.

I reckon both Stevo and Judd should start on the bench Round 1 - wait for the cheer of the massive Carlton crowd when they run on. Although I probably couldn't wait that long for them to get on the ground...

I can't see this happening MBIB. Both of these boys will be in the centre square for the first bounce.

Not really...

How many cobwebs can a champion like Judd have? The only thing in the world that can affect Judd is his own body. It's a bad omen for Carlton to play good players in the NAB Cup, and I certainly wouldn't risk him on a dry 'regional challenge' oval in the drought affected areas of Australia.

He gets to run around against the Witchmond Hats in round 1, so that's practice enough for the real thing.

I agree. I wouldn't risk him on a regional ground at all, however, there are some practices games played on AFL grounds, and I think Princes Park often hosts pre-season games.

Personally, i'd give him a half if we could, and then unleash him against Richmond in round 1. :thumbsu:

Well Princes Park is a whole different story. I think every Carlton champion (or champion at Carlton) should experience the honor of running out onto Princes Park once in their career. Would be a great cultural and historical lesson.
