I love BigFooty. I spend an obscene amount of my time here. I love the variety of discussion and opinions that this site provides. However, I reckon I can count on one hand the amount of times I have seen someone have their opinion on a topic changed by another's argument. As a person who likes to believe I am fairly open-minded, I am struggling to think of an occasion when I have had my beliefs on a topic shift because of someone else's counterargument on BigFooty.

It is all starting to make me question how effective debate is in changing one's opinion*.

So I ask you, GD, when was the last time you changed your mind?

*The irony is not lost

One time I was thinking about killing myself and was pretty set on doing it at one point and then I realised that I was too much of a coward so I didn't. Sort of funny in retrospect, haha. :p

I guess that was the last time I changed my mind over anything 'big'.

I would say you made the smart choice, not the cowardly one.

However, and I probably didn't make it clear enough, but I was more talking about when you have changed your mind because of someone else's argument.

Ooooh, my bad. In that case, Christianity and religion in general.

For or against?

I was very against as a kid, but I had a Christian chaplain who worked at my high school that made me like it. He was the coolest guy ever and made me realise that religion can be a part of someone's life without consuming it. I'm still an atheist, but I'm not an anti-religion atheist anymore.

Not very often have I just clicked and changed my view. But some things after a while have changed.

St Kilda is still the greatest team ever though. And no facts, figures or scandals will ever change that view!

And Engimal, I'm glad you didn't kill yourself. You seem like a great guy.

I'd imagine it would take most people awhile to change their views on important beliefs. If not, I'd argue they never truly believed in the first place.

When I was a kid I had my heart set on the latest Duran Duran album but there was a Spandau Ballet album with a bonus extended remix album.

I changed my mind and went with Spandau.

No regrets.

Still listen to 'em now.

Good on you. Being evangelical is never on, whether you're religious or an atheist.

Surely by stating such a thing you are also engaging in evangelism?

Or did you mean some other word?
Maybe "evangelical" is not the right word, but what I meant was pushing religious beliefs on other people.

Not sure what that has to do with my comment though, I am Christian myself but have never engaged in that sort of behaviour

Oh, for sure, being pushy doesn't help anyone. But evangelism and being pushy are different things.

I guess religion would be a big one. Family was never too Catholic but was an altar boy. Slowly grew out of it during early high school. Internet probably had a bit to do with that.

Geelong are still not the greatest team of all (Brisbane 01-04 will not be topped).

Geelong went on a run just 4 years after that. A team will do it again. Hawthorn in the 80s, Collingwood in the 20s and Melbourne in the 50s have a strong claim to being better.

Sure it's bound to happen again, it might not be as easy to do with the number of teams in the competition and other factors thanks to the corrupt AFL.

I'd love the Hawks of the 80's to be considered the best, and they were pretty darn good :D. If not for Essendon and Carlton they'd be the best team ever!

The '88 Hawks were awesome, I was only fifteen, but I reckon I could have coached them to a flag that year.
