He'll finish with a Test average around 51, a ODI average of 48 and a T20I average of 38.

He'll have played 79 Tests, 185 ODIs and 38 T20Is.

That on its own would suggest he is actually one of our great batsmen. But he's never really been renowned as such. Why not? Is it because he started late?

He's worthy of being considered a 'great' of the game.

His consistency, his cover driving, his remarkable fielding in the gully. Just a brilliant all round player in every single form of the game.

There have been few as versatile and determined as Mike.

Top 10 batsman we have had, amazing player. Made runs when it was tough too.

...but at a much lower level.

Of course we saw the best of him.
i wish he got his chance earlier. i watched a lot of shield cricket in the late 90's early 2000s and the warriors were on every week. his form back then would have got him into the test team

I'd have him as our best ODI batsman behind Ponting.

In the test arena just below the greatest Aus batsmen like Bradman, Ponting, Chappell, Border and Waugh. Just started his career too late to be mentioned with those IMO.
This. He is just a fraction behind due to comparative lack of longevity. He sits just ahead of Langer, Martyn, Boon etc.
ODI has an outstanding average, Imagine him and Bevan batting together.
On an ODI scale though he is right up there: Bevan, Ponting, Jones, Gilchrist, M Waugh, G Chappell, M Hussey (not necessarily in that order).

Dean Jones waves hello

And of course, his bowling...

Arguably in our top 10. Anyone with an average of above 50 after playing as many tests as he has deserves to be titled a great.
