Where should the next AFL team come from realistically...

Gold coast seems logical to me. Brisbane are doing well so I think its time to bring in a rivalry. The fact that the NRL is adding a team there is also another incentive

Yeah the Southport Sharks would be a good base to start from... the AFL would have to give Riewoldt back to them though ;)

I like the following in this order:

1. Gold Coast
2. Western Sydney
3. Canberra
4. Tasmania (whichever of the north or south of the State the AFL wants)

1. Gold Coast – Expat footy central, always growing, relatively strong football competition and 'culture' already in place. Team – Southport Sharks.

2. Western Sydney – Huge potential for the game to grow here. Junior development a must. Time to grow and nurture those 13K rego'd AusKick'ers (2005 figures). Team – Western Bulldogs (a ready-made name for the area).

3. Canberra – Proximity to Melbourne, Sydney, and surrounding region is a relatively strong footy area. Has some sort of AFL 'culture' already and crowds of around 10K every second week a possibility. Team – Kangas to finally make the move permanent and have the whole territory to itself in regards to players, junior development, etc.

4. Tasmania – F*ken hurry up already!

Western Sydney.

Two teams may create local rivalry as well as more interest, which would be good for the code.

I think the Doggies could go there within the next 5 years.

Might have been likely 3 years ago, but it's less likely the Bulldogs will move as they get their house in order.

Thats not a bad point really, New South Wales people are used to having rivalry amongst themselves because of there being so many League teams there.

If you could inject that "I'm a Swans fan, I hate the West Sydney Bulldogs" / "Go the West Sydney Bulldogs! I hate those Swans" mentality into it, it may give the game a kick start in the state.

NSW and QLD sure as hell don't need another side. I think eventually 2 Vic based sides should be replaced by a side in Tassie and a side in NT. Both states have produced great players, love their footy and deserve representation in the AFL.

Maybe something a little like:

Bulldogs - Darwin
Hawthorn - Tassie
Kangaroos - Canberra

My sentiments exactly.

Why would a team spend $20 million redeveloping their training base and then move to rugby league territory in Sydney's west?

It would be football suicide.

Agree totally.

Especially no#1 and no#2.

Zeke: at the rate Carlton is going... there might be a need for a new 16th team.

Interesting comment, especially from a supporter of an insignificant mongrel club that's achieved its success due to the AFL's Salary Cap generosity.

Yeah, good point. If we didn't get the concessions we might have had to cheat the salary cap to win a premiership. And we know you wouldn't stand for that sort of behaviour now would you?

I don't recall a side winning 3 premierships through Salary Cap cheating, do you? I also don't remember a side needing to cheat the Salary Cap to finally become remotely competitive.

darwin isnt big enough, their population is so small i dont think a club could handle it, plus the heat would kill some players, and would probably give a very heavy advantage to the darwin team at home, just because of the heat.

Gold Coast (Southport Sharks), and West Sydney(like someone said Western Bulldogs fits nicely), are the best options, and perhaps a Vic team to move to Tas? maybe Hawks?

California, if you believe Kevin Sheedy. Always thought Dodger stadium would look nice with tall goalposts on the field.

Realistically, nowhere.
