Trying to get big yabbies from muddy farm dams, most dams seem to be dried up though and the few local spots I've tried have had nothing. I've owned one previously, was about 20cm but after about 4 years it died unexpectedly.

Anybody know any spots that are open to public where i could catch one?

Any help will be greatly appreciated, thankyou!

yeah think i might give it a crack. will the female have it's eggs under her tail?

Yes.

You can even get them out of the ponds in public parks.

Attach a coat hangar with a stocking on the edge of a broomstick and GENTLY drag it along the bottom for a few sweeps until you snag a yabby.

Yep, I have family that catch yabbies from their farm dam regularly. They had a few years where supply was thin on account of the drought (their farm is near Rupanyup, in the Wimmera), so in those years they were pretty careful to avoid catching too many, for fear of killing off their population altogether.

I remember once I went with them to the Murtoa races and I bought a yabby burger. That was ages ago- I'm not sure they sell them anymore. They were bloody delicious, though.

I believe their supplies have recovered very nicely since they received all that rainfall in 2010-11.

Hard_to_Beat, do you advise avoiding the females with eggs from the point of view of not decimating the population too much? Or is it a taste issue instead/as well?

was the death caused by a broken aquarium filter?

I apologise, I just read the title of your thread which I found funny, I missed the bit about your yabbie dying, my bad.

The thread I read before that was a QandA about if it was normal to be really happy to know someone you disliked was bashed to death.... big contrast to this one which is what made me laugh.

The way we did it as kids in the south west was put raw chicken between your toes, wade out, then gently grab them when you feel the nibbling.

You can put them to sleep by holding them down and gently stroking their backs a few times. This simple trick has got me tongue deep in plenty of tourist vadge.

Enjoy.

You can but proper "opera house" style yabby nets from any outdoor/camping store for $5-$10. Just chuck a bit of rancid meat in it and throw it in a dam overnight. You'd be unlucky not to catch one, usually you'll get a heap of them.

Yabbies are great to eat. If I'm eating them, I usually put them in clean water for a day or two to get the muddy taste out. Then boil them, and cover them in vinegar and salt and pepper.

Texture is pretty similar to prawns or cray. Similar taste I guess, but I think yabbies are a bit sweeter (maybe cos they're not in salt water). I love them, some people don't. Give them a go. Strongly recommend vinegar and salt and pepper to go on them. And eat them with fresh crusty bread with butter.

Yabbies taste like what I imagine heaven would taste like. There's nothing better.

As its starting to cool down I'd imagine they're starting to dig down into the mud for the winter. Lake Lonsdale in Western Victoria has helped me fill a big esky each time I've been there camping.

If you're throwing drop nets in anywhere public make sure you've got a fishing license (couple of $$s for a 3 day one I think), and name it with a plastic bottle tied to it.
