Where do you think the Cats will finish this year?

I predict a year of inconsistency and frustration.

We will play worse than what we are on paper and play a frustrating brand of footy. Expect to lose the games we are expected to win on the MCG and win a lot of home games.

After some Scotty chest beating on AFL 360 on the eve of finals saying how we've learnt how to prepare for finals footy, I expect us to lose convincingly yet again in the first final after finishing 7th.

Agreed. In the Ablett senior era they talked us up continuously.
Then talked us up 2010. Then went 360 and said we were too slow.
Talked up the midfield last year and it never really fired.
Hope they keep talking us down.
They gonna talk themselves up coz they want MEMBERSHIPS, it all about the $! Then they will defend that talk all season until finals and bust! No integrity in professional sport!

Hard to read really, is this preseason work ethic any different ? Harder, longer seems to be the key ingredient to date. Will be tight I think, we could have a good yr and miss the 8. The crows, port & essendon will be pressing. Will the hawks and swans be similar to us !? Its a lottery. No injuries and everyone plays to there strength at the right time we're a smokey for higher honours. But it's January, go buy a 100 mil pb ticket for thursday [emoji57]

Wait a sec... that's last year.

Look on the bright side, they have never said "I have looked at the draw and I can't see a game we will lose".

If everything goes right maybe 4-6. If we continue having a bad run with injuries and things go wrong probably 8-10.

A lot rides on how much our younger players improve.

Also it’s hard to gauge how the new rules will change things.

Hang on isn’t it January?

I will take a punt on 4-6th.
I am reasonably confident that we will play finals.
Make the finals and anything can happen.

While I like to be optimistic, it's hard to objectively think we will be in the top 6. i would say we'd be more likely to miss the 8. Most of our best players are already 26+ so you wouldn't think they will improve much. We have some talented youngsters like Parfitt, Cockatoo, Narkle, Ratugolea. But not huge numbers, and most clubs have a few youngster they are hoping will improve each year, so we're no different there. Dahlhaus is a decent in who addresses a weakness of our list but you can't expect him to lift us up the ladder on his own. we also have a decent homeground advantage which always helps a little. In the end though it will mainly depend on if there are any major changes that we see due to the review after last year, and whether we change our game style a little.

We finished 8th last year, and i would think most people would say teams that missed the 8 like essendon, adelaide, north and port will improve more than us next year based on theirs lists and recruits in the off season. while aside from Sydney and maybe hawthorn i can't see any big sliders from the 8.

Based on the current premiership odds, we're tipped to finish 9th. While I hope that's wrong, I'd say it's a fair assessment at this stage.

Is CS doing 360 again?

Very balanced assessment and reading it reflects exactly what I feel but didn't verbalise as well as that.

Knocked out in Elimination Final is my guess.

We should come home like a freight train in the back end of the season with some easy wins, but probably not ideal preparation for finals.
Deja-vu all over again

Anywhere from 3rd to 11th based on a number of factors:

- Whether Selwood, Dangerfield and Hawkins can maintain their form; particularly as JS and TH are on the wrong side of 30,
- Whether Stanley can show his 2018 purple patch was indeed new-found consistency;
- Whether the likes of Ratugolea, Fogarty and maybe even Clark can lock down spots in the best 22 and provide consistent output;
- Whether the pre-season talk about anger and aggression manifests itself into good football.

Really good points...

I think all these hinge on what CS does in terms of getting involved more with the playing group and if he buys into it as well.
The pattern and point so discussion are well versed - I need to see more from the coaches as a unit. if that happens, then all the talk of the players wanting to do things will, IMO, be more likely.

The stuff involving injuries etc.. who knows.

GO Catters

Ask me in about round 8 - if we have a solid start to the year then we will have a far clearer idea.
When the draw was released, I thought the start of the year was going to ruin all hope for us.

So far we have a first round, second round, third round pick, fifth, etc etc? Only the fourth was traded to get a pick for Tarca?

So they only likely trade with large currency could be Kelly.

With aging stars, the lack of elite kids coming through, no clear edge in the coaching box and other teams on the make, I'm doubtful we'll make much out of 2019.

I loved the backline last year, but that was without a few of the old blokes. Will the coaches bring the concrete shoes needed at team selection? They haven't shown it since 2011.

We might see a couple of kids step up, the elites may turn it on, but they won't have the team balance to help them fit and firing at the finish line.

Might finish 7th at best - but if the season gets bumpy early, then injuries will be 'easier to manage', retirements will snow-ball and hope will vanish.

Expecting 11th.
