ABS now shows Perth as the most expensive city to live in OZ. Given the COLA is purely for the increased costs of living in the most expensive city (according to AndyD) then Sydney must be losing their COLA and both Freo and the wee-girls getting it.

Bring it on :D

as if it would happen

Everyone knows what the COLA really is. It's a subsidy to teams in non-traditional AFL areas to help them stay relevant.

Despite being a proud west aussie and Freo supporter, I think having a Sydney team in the mix every year is ultimately good for the game. It would be nice if Brisbane could get back to being good again too.

I want AFL to be the code of football played by everyone in Australia - and hopefully spread further too. That's what the "COLA" is really for.

Let's face it. Like Tony Lockett before him, the AFL would be absolutely ecstatic that Buddy Franklin - who is by far the most marketable player in the game - is now playing in Sydney. The COLA is doing exactly what it was meant to do.

I would prefer that the competition didn't sell out its integrity to expand into non football states.

The COLA is a perfect metaphor for everything that is wrong with the AFL. The embarrassing thing is that people like you are happy to accept it because its 'good for the game' when it is actually the exact opposite.

If the AFL doesn't aggressively pursue Sydney as a market, all our grandkids will be playing soccer and will have never heard of AFL.

Except, 1 million a year is a lot of money. Instead if using it to artificially prop up a AFL team, it probably can be used to beef up the local competition or youth league.

Unless it's about the money and not about the footy....

Oh crap!

but but but

I WANT COLA

and mummy says i'm allowed to have it, and the rules say I am allowed to have it - GIVE IT TO ME NOW

What?

Who cares about that?

It is $1 million per year that the other teams do not receive.

Yes, I understand that.

The AFL's job is to promote the AFL and try to expand into new markets. It's unfair to teams in already-established AFL states, but that's the way marketing works.

They could try and expand into new markets without affecting on field performance.

Maybe that would be worth trying? Set up as many school visits and footy clinics as they want.

I honestly can't believe that you think that it is fine for the competition to whore out it's integrity so that kids in NSW will jump on the bandwagon.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree then. Getting NSW kids on the bandwagon is definitely the most important challenge facing the AFL if we want the sport to survive.

How about we agree that you don't give a shit if the AFL is fair or not?

Either way, I'm fine with not responding to you anymore.

EUREKA!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you: The answer to the COLA integrity issue!!!

Now we all know that the AFL has been copping a hammering of late because Sydney have been able to buy in the leagues superstars because of an "unfair" salary cap advantage. It's not good for the image of the game or the integrity of the sport.

I propose that instead of BUYING their superstars, they create their own! Now, now, now put your pitchforks down. I'm not advocating any draft concessions either! This is all too unbelievable you say? We need NSW kids to follow teams and they only follow if they win you say? Well I have the answer!

It's only early days but the acronym (always the most important part) is EZPEDEFTA!!! or Expansion Zone Performance Enhancing Drug Exemption From Testing Allowance.

That way, NSW teams still get their (10%) advantage over the rest of the competition and there's none of that pesky money in the way to cloud everyones judgement!

HOORAY!

They have already started doing this with the academy that NSW and Queensland teams have setup. This pretty much guarantee's that any good players from these two states will play for one of the 4 teams and they will get them cheaper than they could through the draft (Same process as father son bidding).

I think you might have misunderstood what I was saying.

The academy still gives the NSW and QLD teams an advantage that the other teams don't get. I was suggesting footy clinics etc. to get kids interested in the game and have them start playing etc. it doesn't mean that they should get cheap access to them.

I agree, although I would rather the academies than the COLA. (Let's call it the lesser of too evils)

I think they will keep that for around 10 years until one team gets 2-3 players worthy of 1st round picks and clubs will start whinging and it will be over.

At least this way they are developing their own players.
