I wouldn't be surprised if Selwood played AFL for most of the year.

Me neither. As long as he stays injury free there’s no reason why he can't make a similar impact as Murphy did for the Blues this year. Hawkins will be interesting; dont want to get my hopes up. Djerrkura may be used at some point just to add a bit of flair but i think they would probably choose Varcoe before him. Dont expect to see Hogan for at least one year; a 65kg player will struggle with the physical side of the game - he's still a kid. :thumbsu:

Yer, I forgot to mention that. Selwood was supposed to be just as good or even better that Murphy last year, and if Murphy made the kind of impact he did I can't see why Joel couldn't.

I also think Djerrkura will play a few games considering hes pretty solidly built. Could depend on injury and form of others and himself.

selwood and hawkins should definately play in the preseason cup and possibly djerrkura as well. Selwood and Hawkins will probably play a few games of AFL next year. Djerrkura will depend on how he goes in the magoos if he gets a guernsey or not. Hogan needs to muscle up and will spend the year in the VFL next year working on his body. Expect to see Varcoe also play a few AFL games next year

Hope to see Selwood and Hawkins play. Gamble to play most games, and Varcoe a few also. Stokes to play nearly all, with Owen, Djerrkura and maybe West debuting near the end of the year. Hogan won't play.

Would probably swap Owen with Grima as potential debut

I'm not expecting them to set the world on fire next year, less expectations the better. I only expect them to show the right attitude and work for it.

I'd expect Hawkins for sure, Selwood almost certainly. No one else. And I don't see Varcoe getting a game anytime soon. He hasn't shown anything at all in the seconds. Besides, who exactly is getting dropped to make way? The most common complaint about the team is lack of midfield pace; we've already got Tenace, Byrnes and Stokes for that reason. They are all more mature physically and have senior experience. They can't get a game, so how are Selwood and co. going to leapfrog them?

Remember, Thompson is all about number of games experience with his players, I just can't see him promoting first year players ahead of guys with 2-3 years.

I think selwood could play a role similar to Raines. He has a big engine, is cool under pressure with good skills. If Josh Hunt was to move out of the backline (as many suggest) Selwood could conceivably end up a back pocket for most of the year.

Hawkins will play for sure.

Varcoe maybe a few late games like Stokes did last season

Djurrkuka same boat as Varcoe

Hawkins: definitely
Selwood: probably at least a couple of games
Djerrkura: has the body for it, might depend on NAB Cup and magoos form, but I say more likely than not
Hogan: no chance

Varcoe will play for sure

All barring injury of course

And a little thing called form. I still want to know how they will get a game (apart from Hawkins) and who they'll replace.

If I were to guess/make a prediction:

Hawkins - Plays roughly 16 games
Selwood - Plays roughly 14 games
Djerkurra/Varcoe - Play 8 games between them

How this happens:

Varcoe will get a run of good games and get called up in place of Bynes, Stokes, Gamble or injured small forward (S.J).

Djerkurra will be consistent (similar to stokes) but be played BF/wing late in the year replacing Byrnes or an injured Wojak.

Selwood will go close to starting in the AFL in a BP if Hunt is moved up feild.

Hawkins will take the Gardiner/McCarthy spot

Fair enough. I'm a bit more conservative. I think Hawkins will play 6-10 games, Selwood 3-6, Djerkurra and Varcoe 1-4 between them.

I'm very conscious of how conservative Thompson is and how loyal he is to players. How many times does he mention 80-100 games as a minimum requirement for good footballers? Now that he has most of the side on the cusp of that I can't see him promoting 4 first year players. It's taken him 5 years to stop automatically selecting Gardiner.

I'd like to see Hawkins taking Ottens' spot. Mooney, Nathan Ablett and Hawkins forward, and Ottens in the ruck (where he plays his best football) and King off the bench.

I'd like to see King completely off the bench and into the magoos to get some form before he is an automatic selection, Ottens to ruck and Mooney to relieve (worked ok in 2005). This allows a extra seat on the bench and more midfield rotation, we have 3 midfielders that require more game time, 2 are new and the other is varcoe.
I still don't see why ottens should be considered a KPP at full forward, he is big enough but too slow and goes to ground too easily, he is a ruckman that can move up forward Josh Fraser style and snag a couple each game.

Winning the NAB cup didn't do too much for us last year so I think we should at least play the following players in next years pre-season

S.Byrnes
N.Djerrkura
R.Gamble
A.Mackie
S.Owen
B.Prismall
J.Selwood
M.Stokes
K.Tenace
T.Varcoe
D.Wojcinski
T.Callan

All of these are our smaller running players that haven't cemented a spot in the league team as yet. Let them play (in the NAB is best option) and see how they perform with a view to filling running roles on the half back and across the center. Take the 3 or 4 standouts/best and put them in the starting team (joining the regular starters like bartel, corey, gablett, chappy etc) for the regular season (at least for the first 4-5 rounds). I would look to give most of them at least some game time through out the season (If they are showing form in the magoos) as injury and form effects the senior team.

Hawkins I would play in the NAB cup but if he doesn't look comfortable I would put him in the two's and sneak him back into the top side at about round 5. If he starts in round 1 with out having some confidence and form from the NAB the added media pressure might be a bit of an overload that early in the season so starting in the magoos would get him time to settle (and play against men).

N.Ablett should play HF or at CHF if Mooney isn't there (suspension/injury or run on the ball) I would give him the 1st 6-10 rounds to cement his position. To cement his position he wouldn't have to kick bags of goals but to provide a marking target and feed the ball to team mates intelligently (setting up goals) like he did in the vfl at the end of last year.
