As I'm sure many of you know; in the second half of season 2009 each team will be allowed to elevate a rookie (without putting a senior listed player on the long-term injury list, as was previously required).

I know it's very early days, but there's nothing wrong with a wild prediction or two.

ESSENDON'S ROOKIE LISTED PLAYERS:
Bock, Christian . #46 205cm 83kg 16/4/1990
Carroll, Bryce .. #40 184cm 73kg 25/6/1990
German, Thomas .. #45 178cm 73kg 29/8/1990
Klemke, Kade .... #47 180cm 78kg 15/7/1990
Magin, Rhys ..... #34 180cm 77kg 4/3/1989
Quinn, Michael .. #41 185cm 77kg 26/1/1990

(I couldn't find YouTube links for German or Magin, and I'm a little bit iffy about whether I found the right (Mighty) Mike Quinn. :D If you have any links to videos I'm missing please post.)

My prediction is Carroll, he just looks like a classy player to me. Magin would also have to give it a strong push - I reckon it's a pretty strong indication of how a rookie is regarded behind the scenes if he is retained.

Magin, 2nd year in the system, hopfully filled out a little and has been there and done it b4.

I picked Bock, heard great things about him, could play a defensive role for us if Paddy/Fletch go down.

Bock's way too light-on to play yet:

Player ..... BMI
Hille ........ 27.5
Fletch ....... 23.7
Ryder ........ 23.2
Bock ......... 19.8 !!!

Paris Hilton . 17.5 (not on our list in case you're wondering)

Germo because he is in and under, hard at it and will give everything he has got. No doubt.

I hope Klemke is the one

Why, so he can turn the ball over a record amount of times in an AFL match. Seriously, you took glee in calling Deboer "DeClanger" before the draft and yet you want to elevate the guy who has ordinary foot skills and poor decision making under pressure before he has played any Bendigo games to show he has improved.

I'm not saying that he can't get better but there is a reason he went so late in the rookie draft, he is probably the least skilled rookie we have apart from Quinn who will need time to get a feel for aussie rules (and looks to have improved a lot from when he first came over anyway). Even if Klemke is hard at it he still has many doubts on him.

I don't know who, but definitely not beanpole Bock. Bulk him up first. Let's not get our youngsters unnecessarily injured before their time. Looking at the difference in BMI between him and Paris and Hille and you get the idea.

The most experienced I would suggest, which I noticed someone pointed out was Magin.

I would think Klemke would be a nice addition to the senior list. Not quite sure why you're questioning his decision making skills, that was one of his strengths. Backed his judgement and most of the time it payed off. The thing holding him back from getting selected in the ND was his frame and his speed IMO.

But answering the original question, Rhys will get first crack at a senior spot I'd imagine. Second year in the system, good footy brain and has relatively good skills.

You're welcome to think anything you want, I disagree on what little I've seen.

Well I admit I have only seen him in 2 or 3 montage clips, so I only have a very rough idea and no final opinion. Having said that when your "highlights" make you look ordinary something has gone horribly wrong.

Yes, everyone knew his speed was an issue. However all ND pick are speculative and by that token rookie picks are even more speculative and it's not as if he was taken with our early picks in that either.

As i said I'm not saying he can't improve and I haven't seen him play a full game but seriously some of his choices in clips of him were extremely average and he seemed to rush things.
I will of course hope he proves me incorrect given he is with us.

If you disagree with me, that's fine. I was simply stating my opinion.

I'm not sure everyone knows about Klemke's average speed. A fair few people like yourself put it down to decision making, but IMO, his speed was the main problem.

Highlights packages aren't put together magnificently for the U/18's. Watching a few minutes of his footy, not live, and pulling his strengths & weaknesses out from that isn't a good indicator of his ability.

Fair enough, as I said I will wait to see him play actual games, either Bendigo or preferably AFL (maybe even a NAB cup if we continue), however I'm not sure his speed is what makes him look like a poor decision maker (and even if it was the pace of AFL is even harder for players to get used to).

I do agree with this, highlights and clips of games aren't brilliant indicators, but they still give you a look at a player in standard player. If anything they should actually make a player look better because while they are not put together brilliantly they generally use the best plays they have.

I never said (and never will claim) 10 minutes of clips equates to having seen players play multiple full games, but it still gives a breif insight into what a player will look like in his first year or so of footy (unless all the footage just happens to be from games where a player play well below par, which generally doesn't happen). Maybe he had an excelent preseason and maybe Knights' focus on skills really polished his kicking and maybe he will look better with AFL standard players around him. But I wouldn't count on it being the second part of his first year.

I agree.

Magin will be the pick of this bunch at the half way point of the season IMO.
