Smiddaz almost nailed it. I'd go Ablett, Hodge, Pavlich. Cox is tempting but with two a-grade mids we'd really step up - one's probably not enough. Could also replace Pav with Goodes to give us a ruck option.

If you could pick anyone from history, the ultimate would be Rene Kink, Jesus and Harold from Neighbours.

Better than Ottens? Have they played against each other very often? If so, who has won the duels more often?

Cox is a great player and maybe the best ruckman in the AFL, but I find it hard to agree that he is far and away better than Ottens.
Cox IS far and away better than every ruckman in the AFL.

Is Brad Ottens a ruckman in the AFL? If so, Dean Cox is far and away better than him.

It's not close between Dean Cox and anyone. That's why he's so valuable.

Obviously you pick the 3 best palyers in the competition which is completely unrealistic.

I would prefer to look at what type of player would take us to the cup.

The two areas that stand out is an excellent ruckman and an inside mid.

Cox is a one off freak, but the way the game is going you need a tall, skilled mobile ruckman - perhaps Leuenberger/Kreuzer/Natinui is going to be the model of the future. Josh Fraser nearly fits this category, but he just can't ruck well enough!

Inside Mid - Ablett/Judd obviously but once again they are freaks. We just lack that A grade midfielder that a lot of clubs have.

O'Bree is now our primary extractor of the footy. He is serviceable but look at each clubs player in the same position - Mitchell, Foley, McClean, Black, Kerr, Kirk, Kornes, Cross, Ball, McVeigh, Judd/Murphy, Simpson, Haselby/Palmer, Edwards, Bartel/Selwood/Ablett. Freo, Kangas & Adel lack a little but O'Bree is not in that league.

J Selwood is an ideal fit for us, Kerr is another, and looking to the future Rich will be very good and hopefully Beams!

D. Cox
J. Selwood.
G Ablett.

Add those 3 and we are right in the mix.

I don't really rate Hille that highly. The reality is there are few good ruckmen because coaches want tall midfielders to ruck.
Hodge instead of Selwood would suffice.

I will watch the Eagles v Cats game with great interest. From what you say, Cox should make a meal of Ottens.

I'd go:

Cox- we need a dominant ruckman. Our midfield would improve 5% just by Cox providing us with first use of the footy on the majority of times. His mobility is obviously also a huge asset around the ground.

Scarlett- we need a key defender who can consistently stop the big forwards like Fev, Buddy & Brown. Scarlett also has the bonus of providing great rebound and an ability to break the lines.

Pavlich- what can't the bloke do? Would play key forward and kick 70+ a season for us. I know his goal kicking is sometimes questionable but there's too much plus side to him. He could also go into the middle or down back and dominate. The complete package!

I'm a believer of the dominant midfield overcomes your defensive and forward short comings. So with that I'd be loading up in the middle with three of the best.

Cox - as just about everyone has said
Selwood - some may be a touch better than him right now be he is awesome and still so young
Ablett - he's an out and out gun
