Copying a thread I posted on the Freo board (and got a mainly positive response from). I want to see how different the poll ends up on here as opposed to on the Freo board.

Firstly, great season. Next year will be huge for both of our teams.

Watching your game last night I had a really interesting debate with a Dockers fan about which pair he'd rather have on his list...Fyfe/Pitt or Sheppard/Darling.

There is plenty of shit heaped my way by Freo mates in regards to taking Sheppard at 7 and seeing Fyfe, who I love to watch, slip through to you guys. And yes, it does hurt! I counter them with Darling at 26 after Pitt at 20, and it seems it's 1-1 in the draft stakes. Obviously there are other examples such as Swift/Ballantyne but focusing on these two in particular brought about a fun conversation, though in the end he decided to stick with Fyfe and Pitt.

I'm just keen to get your thoughts on this, as he had trouble coming to a conclusion.

This isn't to stir up shit, it's to get an insight into the biases of both boards/teams and hopefully even distinguish between the power of the respective recruiters.

Will be as one-sided as the poll on the freo board :D.

For those who are too lazy :p to click on the link, the current poll on the Freo board shows...

Fyfe and Pitt - 49 votes (90.7%)
Sheppard and Darling - 5 votes (9.3%)

...and one of those 5 votes is mine.

I'm a huge fan of Fyfe but it's harder to find potentially dominant key position players than midfielders.

This

If anything, Pitt costs them that vote. Shep is miles ahead of him, and that's with three eyes open

And This

Blind Freddy could tell you that Fyfe is better than Sheppard with Darling and Pitt also being a no contest.

Sheppard's actually show he can at the very least contribute at AFL level while Pitt's struggling to register double digit possession games in the WAFL.

Fyfe and Darling are both special players, but Sheppards ability to at least shows he's competent gives us the nod.

You won't get a fair poll on the Freo board due to Darling being the scapegoat for McPharlin's dumb suspension rather than blame their own player.

If fyfe was a better kick it would be interesting but pitt just absolutely kills it. Darling and fyfe very, very close.

I have it like this
1. Darling
2. Fyfe
Daylight
3. Sheppard
Daylight
More daylight
4.Pitt

Pointless exercise. As pointed out, you could make a case for either Fyfe/Darling being number 1, but both are decent enough. Sheppard was in the 22 until his injury and Pitt struggles to play at WAFL level.

The pointlessness of it is simply demonstrated with the All Australian Nick Naitanui versus Jack Watts argument. You hear most Melbourne supporters still wouldn't want Naitanui. Most people really struggle to get the goggles off, therefore noone is surprised the vote is 90% to 10% even though the numbers add up for West Coast. 1 bust and 1 star in the making doesnt outdo 1 star in the making and 1 solid contributor.

Without being biased, i actually think Sheppard will be a pretty handy player at the very worst..... in the next few years. Looks like he can play wing, half back and half forward from the games he played this year.

Therein lies the point. The biases have been established, I would now be interested in seeing neutral perspective on the matter.

Most other supporters wouldn't know enough about Sheppard or Pitt to make that call and would base it solely on Fyfe Vs Darling

If it was darling vs fyfe i may have voted freo. Probably would have. Pitt gave me an easier choice.
Yeah, it essentially becomes Darling V Fyfe and Pitt v Sheppard. Our boys for me - Fyfe's very good and I love watching him but just needs to work on his kicking. Think Shep will become a player too.

For mine I'd go the Darling/Sheppard - only because their is a significant difference between Sheppard and Pitt.

Darling and Fyfe are both just wonderful footballers - both with their drawbacks - but as 20 year olds to do what they did is amazing.

Nathan Fyfe - Career Statistical Rankings
Ranked 1st in Clangers Per Game in 2012

He has a great ability to read the play, mark and get the contested ball. Follows up with the blind freddy bomb it long approach without looking up. Field kicking aint flash either. Darling had a great year as the sole man in our forward line for over half the season. Thank god Fremantle dont have both.

Fyfe will be a super player. Jacky D will dominate the competition for years. And Sheppard will make a mighty fine player as well. Pitt, not so much

luckily for us, those are weak positions in our current team

We really need him to be groomed as a midfielder. If he focuses on improving his play below his knees, and then gains confidence to back his pace, he could make one of the midfield spots his.

I thought Pitt looked really good pre-draft. Good height, mark, speed and skills. Given his size he was always going to be a long-term prospect but I suspect he might have Jack-Watts-itis.

Darling and Shep thanks. Darling needs no introduction and I think Sheppard will be a very valuable player for us in the future. Think a more defensively accountable but slightly less polished Embley.

I think Sheppard showed enough this year especially early on that if he puts a big preseason behind him this summer I believe he could be what we are missing in the middle, because he definitely has some great pace and classy skills. He will be the big mover next year for us!
