While Carlton supporters wail about Gibbs, didn't we nail the 2006 draft

I looked in on the Carlton board today just to see if I couldn't find a bit of wailing and gnashing of teeth. I wasn't unhappy with what I found. Not surprisingly a lot of Blues posters want Gibbs blood for his softness and lack of desire around a contested ball.

A no 1 draft pick would seem a little wasted as a HBF sweeper which is perhaps the easiest role in footy to play. I would perhaps have Gibbs around HFF as a gifted outsider he might cause damage similar to Didak. It is beautiful to see their pain

It made me look at the 2006 draft and realise again how well Hine nailed that year. Out of the top 10 only Selwood, Reid and Brown have lived up to potential and there are not a lot of standouts further down the list.

For Hine to have picked out

Reid
Brown
Dawes
Dick
Goldsack

in the main draft, then the following rookies

Wellingham
MacCaffer
Clarke

is just an amazing hit rate. That Carltons no 1 has turned out to be a soft back 1/2 accumulator makes the joy of that draft all the sweeter

2006 was our best draft year just about ever. The amount of quality and depth in that draft that we scored was unbelievable.

Nice to read GC however, I think Travis Boak from Port is a very good player (pick 5 2006). It's a pity he's stuck at Port and gets overwelmed by their shitness and just can't get the space to show his true class.

Even considering this, he still provides great output.

Gibbs, Gumbleton (injuries), Hansen, Leuenberger (looks OK not great), Thorpe (meh) and Armitage (OK foot soldier).

Frawley and Jack Reiwoldt came just outside the top 10 both very good players.

Top job Mr Hine.

Everyone should head over to the Carlton board and read the rant thread.

They are reacting worse than what we did after the thrashing to the scum.... And that's saying something.

The most epic thing i have ever read.

anyone else think we tanked round 3 just to get their hopes up and ensure that the inevitable crushing of said hopes would be that much sweeter? :)

Re: While Carlton supporters wail about Gibbs didn't we nail the 2006 draft

Holy crap.... they're having a big spat over it!

I thought Gibbs was good.... I obviously wasn't watching close enough! We'll have him! Bucks will play him in the correct position and he'll be good.
He's no Sharrod Wellingham though :p;)

The night they beat us it was all "its an exciting time to be barracking for carlton, we're amazing, etc, etc, etc".... Now they're just going nuts! Its only one game!

Re: While Carlton supporters wail about Gibbs didn't we nail the 2006 draft

It's funny how they are like 'oh we had 3 of our best 22 out' well when they beat us, they were all saying how Carlton will win the premiership blahblahblah.

We were without Taz, Reid (for 3/4 of it), Krakouer, Didak, Brown, and a man down (Ball) for 3/4 of it too. But, of course, that doesn't matter, does it!

Injuries are no excuse for a loss. We were smashed. 22 v 22. Carlton are about equal with us at the moment.

Re: While Carlton supporters wail about Gibbs didn't we nail the 2006 draft

Some funny shit from the Carlton rant thread. It's like the Richmond board of years gone by.

Negatives
soft - Gibbs, Murphy, Garlett, Russell
dumb - Curnow, Bower, Robinson, Touhy, Waite, Joseph, Russell, Ratten
selfish - Walker, Garlett
delist - Joseph, Russell

Disgracefull game from Waite, did not even offer a contest.

Positives
Well done Juddy & Ellard, at least they tried.

Top 4, hahahahahahahaha:thumbsdown:

Hahaha quality.

Waite. Shocking, maybe he needs a rest?

They rested him last week.

It's coming time to give up on this list I think.

Hahaha. From favourites to canning the list.

Only got half way through the thread but sheesh it gave me some laughs.

It's amazing, and a great read. You'd think after 10 years of being shit they would've learned to cope with losses a bit better. They really had their hearts set on being this years powerhouse didn't they?

Bloody awesome draft for us! Wish Dick had of developed (yeah, yeah haha). That and '05 made us.

If Brad Dick's body held up he'd be perfect for us right now, and if Chris Egan had better attitude that draft is about half a team

Unfortunately we turned up wearing their downhill skis that night.

The first 7 minutes they killed us, but after 1/4 time we got back into the game, however losing 2 players so early, 1 was a KPD which really killed us.

Carlton only got on top of us late

Um, it was actually 22 v 20 before half time.

Lost our CHB and key inside mid before half time, and we were only 9 points or so down when Ball went off.

People just remember that first quarter, but forget how we clawed back before Ball went down.

We don't accept excuses when we get the rub of the green with injuries to our opponents during games so we shouldn't use them ourselves.

The 2010 GF's and the 2011 are both prime examples. One year we took advantage the other year we didn't.

r

while I agree we completely nailed it, I think you're being a bit unfair on a couple of players in Boak and Leuenburger.

They are both guns and would love to have them at the Pies

Re: While Carlton supporters wail about Gibbs didn't we nail the 2006 draft

Team loses match badly
Teams supporters go onto Bigfooty supporter board and spew vile and vitriol
Other teams supporters (if their team won that weekend) go on to the other board for a laugh.

Dont know why anybody would bother going to another teams board to read that rubbish, may as well stay on the Collingwood board and wait for our next loss. Theres as many idiots jumping to conclusions here after one game as anywhere else.

Not sure what our excellent 2006 draft has to do with Bryce Gibbs either. Its a very long bow to draw.

And key injuries during a game especially early ARE very important.

Hawthorn lost Gibson against the Swans, Carlton lost Carazzo against Essendon, Collingwood lost Ball against Carlton. It has a massive effect.

He probably is, but it's also fair to point out we didn't have a play on those guys anyway so they're not super relevant. Who did we pass on? Frawley, Tippett, J Riewoldt? All of them would be handy assets but none of them we should necessarily be doing excessive hand-wringing over considering who we got. I'm guessing a few here would love Tippett over Dawes but I'm not sold on Tippett.
