We have been labeled a poorly skilled team for a long time and it would be good to pass on the mantle. Which players don't have the skills and which players can we realistically look to phase out to improve this aspect of the game?

Lack of Best 22 attributes

Possesion (kicking, handballing)
White, Tambling, Raines, Tuck, Johnson, McGuane, Hyde, Tivendale, Polak

Speed
Pattison, Riewoldt, Hyde, Tivendale, Polak, Bowden, Polo

Awarness
Hyde, Tivdendale, Raines, Tambling

Footy Brain
Jackson, Raines

That's about all I can realy think of, but theres probably plenty I've missed

i disagree with u on almost all of those except for white and raines on the kicking, and polak at a set shot
i could go into detail and say why players shouldnt be in those catagory's but i cant be bothered

I like your work RG, very impressive, only one critism but, Johnson may not look that polished and doesn't kick the ball like Josh Hunt, but if you watch closely enough he rarely misses a target by both hand and foot. Yes last year wasn't that great, but this year has been excellent, 92% disposal efficiency on the weekend, 83% in round 4, 81% in round 3 and 85% in round 1. All for a bloke who is averaging 30 disposals a game, and the more time you have the pill, obviously the more mistakes your going to make. That was the only critism, and I think I have justified my reasons, but all in all, terrific work :thumbsu:

Take of the rose coloured glasses for a second. Players like Tambling, Raines, White, Hyde and King all give us run however they definatly lack the polish of RFC players like Deledio and Newman not to mention other AFL players.

Tivendale has one of the best left foots in the game, but with nearly all left footers he doesn't have a right

Matt White has a kicking effidiency of around 86% so I'd say he's got good enough skills for the best 22

Also every premiership team has poorly skilled players, look at Chad Fletcher from West Coast, he's as bad as Tuck!

IMO:

The three most important skills are:

1. Get the ball
2. Work out what to do with the ball
3. Do it well.

Now you can get the ball without being a contested possession champ - if you can read the play, run to the right spots, time a lead - you can get plenty of the ball. Sometimes supporters deride this because the player is not obviously 'getting their hands dirty'. Example: Howatt - if he was more damaging with the ball he could be very good.

Work out what to do with the ball is the most critical - all these players have relatively excellent skills - but making the right decision is critical. Sometimes it is better to do the high-percentage, boring play rather than go for the highlight. This leads to:-

Do it well - yes, you do need kicking and handball skills - but not necessarily a '40-metre bullet to teammates chest' - sure that looks good, but sometimes a chip into space can be just as effective.

With those in mind, I think our best skill players are Johnson, McMahon, Foley, Deledio, Simmons, Brown and Newman (although he had a poor game on the weekend).

The following players have problems in the 'Get the ball' area:

Thursfield (has become totally defensive-minded - needs to provide more run out of defence), Schultz, Pettifer.

Those with problems in decisions: Tambling, Edwards, Raines, King, Richo, McGuane.

Those with Disposal skill problems, Tivendale (great-looking kick - not a good kick), Richo, Pettifer, King.

A lot of these can be fixed - Edwards is already showing he is a far smarter player this year than last. Some players can overcome their deficiencies in some areas by being excellent in others eg: Richo, King (although he can be scary).

And when I say 'Good' or 'Excellent' I am referring to 'Relative within a team that finished 16th last season'.
