This is most likely too early to really think about, just a list of those who will need to come out firing next season or face trade / de-listing:

Clint Bartram
Daniel Bell
Lynden Dunn
Paul Johnson
Addam Maric
John Meesen
Brad Miller
Michael Newton

And though they sure as hell won't be going anywhere, Colin Garland & Austin Wonaeamirri really need to kick the injuries & get back on the field or there might be some concerns.

Cheney - has to play a few good games OR improve speed OR skills otherwise will be too far down the order to persist with
Bartram - has to play a few good games AND show an improved skill level to persist with
Bell - has to play some good games AND show improved skill and decision making
Miller - has to show improvement, particularly getting more possessions and kicking more goals
Mcdonald - body will be in trouble, he'll need to stay fit and play 12 or more decent games
Johnson - Alot depends on other ruck prospects, but at the very least will need to play 12 AFL games. 08 form will probably be adequate
Bail - needs to show something, consisted footy for Casey and possibly at least a couple of AFL games might be needed

Rookies
Meesen - will need to recover from injury, a lot depends on other ruck prospects
Spencer - once again depends on other ruck prospects, but will need to regularly play good VFL footy and show more at AFL
Newton - needs a miracle
Healey - needs to be playing Casey seniors and rivaling more highly rated midfield prospects who will be playing for Casey (ie. Gysberts, Jetta, McKenzie, Strauss)
Hughes - anything short of an AFL debut will not do enough

Add Rohan Bail, he is only new but mature age. Will need to play atleast 5 games you would think to hold a senior list place.

Same goes for TMac, needs to show abit.

I agree with most of the players selected.

I'm going to throw in one name that people may not agree with.

Austin Woneamirri

Not only do I struggle to spell his name but he definitely needs a big year. He can't live off the excitement in the Freo game forever. Truth be told, he had a couple of good games against poor teams and whilst he was apparently set for a big 2010, if he can't get out on the park then he's no good.

Three things can happen to Wonna next year:

1) He gets back to full fitness and into the 22, plays 16+ games and shows us all that he's a decent player (as a minimum, he could be better)

2) He gets back to full fitness but struggles and shows us that he's a bit of a one hit wonder. I'd hate this to happen but we can't discount the chance.

3) He struggles to get back onto the park and has another year ruined by injuries.

Of course, we'd all like to see 1) occur but 2) or 3) could result in him being delisted, especially if Maric and Tapscott have good years as small forwards.

Big call, I agree with some of it, but keep in mind that Wona is nowhere near the head of the chopping-block list. Even if he barely gets on the park, players like Bell, PJ, Miller, (Newton + Meesen), Dunn, Bartram, Bail, Cheney are all in more danger than him. Because of the GC entry and compromised draft, I can't see us getting rid of all of the above and Wona in order to use pick 100 in the ND on some spud HBF/winger. He's safe for now.
Also, look at Geelong's forward line. Given, for argument's sake:
Jurrah = Stevie J
Tapscott = Chapman
Wona = Varcoe
Maric = Stokes
Watts = Mooney x 100
Fitz = Hawkins

They manage to fit Johnson, Chapman, Varcoe and Stokes in the same team most weeks (except the GF lol). Competition for spots is healthy.

He was great as a rookie in his debut season and very consistent in my opinion.

He has one bad year with injuries and you want to delist him already???

Plus he has been given a two year deal recently so there in no chance in HELL he will be delisted...pull your head in!

He didn't say he wanted him delisted, learn to read.

I agree with him, he's worth nothing if he can't get on the park.

Also he wasn't very consistent, he was very up and down but you expect that from someone in their first year.

AS A ROOKIE IN HIS DEBUT SEASON i thought he was consistent...learn how to read!

And what does the term "need to have a big year" mean, from what i understand it means you either show something or your gone...

Hmm maybe Dez did not read the OP:rolleyes:

Sylvia and Jamar for me.

They need to continue on their improvement in 2009. Sylvia especially, he could be top 10 in the comp IMO if he plays to his ability.

With Gold Coast having the first 5 rookie picks you would hope they grab one the below. Then we would not have to worry about how they go and try some new talent.
John Meesen
Michael Newton
Fingers crossed they all people live up to their potential and make it a very hard decision for the recruiting department.

Dean Bailey

Agreed, Bailey needs to improve his win/loss ratio considerably, otherwise he won't survive the chop.
Catch 22, this year he was expected to deliver a priority pick with approx 8 rounds to go, next year a priority pick will send him packing. Is that ironic? Where is Alanis to explain...

I think we'll see what he's really worth as a coach in 2010, and I'm putting my money on a contract extension.

I don't WANT to delist Wonna and I think that it's UNLIKELY that he would be but if he has a poor year and some fringe players like Dunn, Johnson and Bell improve, there would be some questions asked.

I think this is a very fair point. This issue here was the definition in the OP. The same could also be said about most players, if they are not delivering put them on no uncertain terms. We must demand improvement and consistency of the playing group not just a few highlights here and there.

I think Bailey sent a good message when he got rid of Jonhstone, who was up down and everything in between. I believe that this upcoming year we will have a more clearly defined game plan and roles will be more obvious to players, allowing for a better assessment of the group.

Im just hoping Dunn has a big year in forward line to save himself from being delisisted. But will Bailey cut his losses on Dunn in the midfield or continue to persist?

An interesting point is that with next years draft being so limited, I couldnt imagine we wont want to use many picks.

Throw Bruce and McDonald retirements in and I cant see many players being delisted.

How many players do you guys think will actually get the chop presuming we dont trade significantly for more draft picks? I would guess that perhaps 3 players will get the chop??

Bell, Johnson and one of Miller/Bartram would be sweating on a decent season for me.

Don't think he needs one, but it would be great to see Wonaeamirri come back and show the same sort of energy that he did in 2008. With an improved midfield and your forward line also on the up he could be the icing on the cake.

Well said SC :thumbsu:

Definitely silly to be saying that he's under pressure at this point - hell, he kicked 24 goals, and was our second-highest goalscorer in his first season!

I don't really think DB will be in any great danger, to be honest. Partly because I'll be surprised if we even end up in the bottom 4 next year, let alone not improving substantially on this year's results. And at least a few of our losses this year can be attributed primarily to injuries, of course...

I agree, i think my call last year for a big 2009 was Matthew Bate and he delivered. Dunn had a very promising start to his career, but since 2006, Jones, Bate, Petterd and Garland (drafted around similar years) have surpassed him and even bartram to a lesser extent.

Agreed he will gain a regular spot in the side playing alongside bate as a lead up hff who can kick 20-30 goals in a season as well as spend some time in the middle.

Miller, Bell, Newton are others who need to big year or is the writing on the wall. I think miller is the only one who can survive with a so-so year.

Injury wise, would love to see Jamar, Wona and Garland all be back fit and firing, no one doubts their place in the side for 2010, we just want to see it week in and week out. And also get 20 games out of Grimey!
