Reading Sheahan's infamous Top 50 and, ignoring the furore over Carey, it seemed fairly standard stuff - Ablett and Farmer in the Top 10 and then not much else for Cats fans.

Until I saw Doug Wade. Does he deserve his spot? Or is there some other Cat that was better than him?

Bernie Smith made the AFL team of the century

Budda would have been there if he had a premiership medal - but like the Brownlow he kept just missing out

come back in 20 years - Scarlo and little Gaz will be there

was confusing your post with Scott Palmers top 50 for a moment. Some media commentators cream themselves over carey. I would have had Ablett above Whitten but the top 3 are pretty correct IMO. It is just a matter of which order you prefer and that is very subjective.

My top 3: Ablett, Matthews, Carey

Top 3 are definetly correct...

However, I am surprised Paul Couch or Hocking didn't finish higher. Elite players in there time, extremely competent and skilful in their own way. But I could just be bias.

From a purely biased GFC pov I am a little surprised that Buddha Hocking didn't get in from guys I have seen play. Consistently good and as one opposition supporter once said to me - "...in his prime, pound for pound, the best player in the comp..."

I personally would have Ablett at number 1, I'll argue with anyone about him being better than Carey. Maybe Ablett's lack of impact in Grand Finals (outside 1989) counted against him?? Carey and Matthews, great players but Ablett was scary-good and did things I'm never likely to see again in my lifetime.

However, I think there are two other guys (at least) from Geelong that can have cases mounted for them.

Burnie Smith - AFL and GFC Teams of the Century (need I say anymore?? If so, look him up and read about him - gun!!)

Edward Greeves - winner of the first Brownlow and runner-up 3 times, GFC Team of the Century, 2 time premiership player and Hall of Fame member.

Maybe Greeves might not stack up in the top 50 of all-time but Smith does IMO.

Then again, my views are clouded (like many) ;)

Good post. I expected to see both in there.

I highly doubt that mate. Ablett missing out in a spot in the top 3 is bloody criminal. And even then the top 3 you could never decide on.

Is it worth doing a top 50 accross the life of VFL/AFL? Who was around to see them all play. How can I judge some one who played 50 years ago to some one that you see regularly. But I did see abour 7 years of Doug Wade, and he was very good.

Where did David Mensch come?
26th? 29th?
or thereabouts??

cats view on top fifty players of all time

hi i was just wondering your views on the best players of all time 1 to 50 ?thanks. And congrats for last year it was a pleasure to watch exciting footy played thanks again

Re: cats view on top fifty players of all time

Cheers mate.
I thought it was horrible, not just because Ablett wasn't no.1 or not in the top 3 (it's always a debate with Matthews, Ablett, Carey by the public with who's better).
But just some of the other players like Coleman disrespectd at 22, Ben Cousins in there, And no Dermet Brereton.
Also Mike Sheehan has always been Wayne Carey's no.1 fan. And I find it disgraceful that one man has a say as to who is the best ever players. :thumbsd:
I'ts absolutely appaling the way the AFL has handled this.

It's pretty arbitrary who was in and who wasn't, and where you appeared on the list. Most people think Kerr was better than Cousins (or Judd for that matter) yet Cousins makes the list and Kerr doesn't. Judd (and a bunch of others) miss out because they haven't played enough games. John Coleman only played 98 games in his entire career.

There was an obvious weighting towards forwards, too, which didn't make much sense. If Carey is the best ever, and Jakovich consistently beat Carey, then... well you get my drift.

Personally I think Carey is way overrated. As good as he was - and there is no doubt he was a talented player - I don't ever remember looking at him the same way I looked at Ablett, Hird, Plugger, etc. Carey always looked beatable, even at his best.
