Who is this guy? Played 5 first class matches with 16 wickets. Don't tell me that's deserving of a Baggy Green. :thumbsd:

Hauritz should've come back in, atleast he's proven he can take wickets.

Easy on!

I played a lot of cricket with him and he's certainly worthy. How many first class wickets and matches did Warney have under his belt before being given a go:confused: Smith will play anyway as he's a better bat but Micky Beer will play test cricket and will do well...bookmark it:)

Agree entirely

It's not about being deserving of a baggy green by virtue of form, it's about having what's required to be a quality test player. Smith and Hughes in = terrific decision making because both, regardless of current form, can seriously play. As for Beer, all I can say is he has been previously talked about as being in our plans for the next Ashes in England; so it's not an out of the blue selection at least, there's been some long term thinking there. We'll see I guess. Remember their FC records when they've had stuff all exposure don't really mean much.

More Beeeeeeeeeer, more beeeeeeeeer more beeeeeeeeeeer more beeeeeeeeer! More Beer, more Beer!

Can't wait to be chanting that when 'Pinta' takes his first test scalp. :)

I know he hasn't played much yet, but O'Keefe aside (maybe), he is the best long term Test prospect we have in the spin department IMO. Inspired selection. :thumbsu:

Can someone please explain why he has been mentioned as a potential squad member for the next ashes? what he like as a bowler? and what about the other parts of his game ie fielding / batting like?

From what I've gathered following WA this season, he's accurate, gets some good shape with the Freo Doc at the WACA, and he is a good turner of the ball. :thumbsu:

Batting is sub-par, started his first class career with 3 ducks! And his fielding isn't the best, but neither was Doherty's, how many misfields did he let through???

Left arm orthodox. Comes from a good height. Micky's about 6'2, maybe 6'3, has really good flight and drift. He'll probe away outside off then come back in at the right handers and trap you LBW or bowled trying to cut too close. Fields like a fast bowler. Made some runs down the order in Grade cricket in Melbourne but is more likely just to hold up an end. Smith has him well and truly covered with the bat.

How long is long term? Couple of weeks, couple of months? He made is debut in October.

Never heard of the guy until today.

massive step up from first class to test level as shown by doherty's so called probing bowling at first class level to totally innocuous hack at test level.

dont be fooled by smith taking wickets at first class level, he is an extremely medicore leg spinner atm but an above average batsmen. his performance in hobart with aus a should be evidence of that, treated with absolute disdain by bell and prior.

Should be able to chalk some runs up at no. 6 though

First read his name about a year ago - in with the usual suspects; Hazlewood, Mitchell Marsh, Steve Smith etc.. I didn't know who he was either of course, but that's a fair while before his debut so clearly he has been identified for reasons other than FC form. Remember they follow these guys from an early stage, like early teens. They probably have a list for every age group.

Now we've got positive comments from Mickey Arthur, and the WA commentary team spoke highly of him in the tour game against England. The only people labelling him a spud or kneejerk selection are the ones who haven't a clue who he is, let alone watched him bowl a ball. He may well struggle, who the **** knows, but at least this appears to be a player who has been part of a long term framework as opposed to a flavour of the month like Doherty.

Gee with Beer getting a run the great Aaron O'Brien should feel harshly done by. In fact Dan Cullen and Cullen Bailey would have to be disappointed to.

It will either prove to be a genius decision or the nail in another selectors coffin.

My prediction is don't let the door hit you on the way out Coxy!

Is there any WA player Mickey hasn't spoken out about declaring that they should be in the test team?

With the way he's been prattling on I'm quite surprised they're at the arse end of the Shield competition. He's made them sound like the Invincibles MK II.

Ah, so he's one of those "in the system" selections, eh? That explains it then. This is the same thing that's apparently keeping Trent Copeland (the best bowler in Shield cricket) out of the Australian side, because he "didn't come up in the system".

I'm all for picking guys on potential (there was an interesting article on CricInfo today about looking beyond the numbers), but you want a guy to have shown something special at Shield level, maybe at least a 5-fer. Who knows though, maybe Beer is the next Peter Taylor.

Didn't we all say the same thing when we picked Warne and McGrath? They were very raw, but it proved to be a good move.

Far as I can tell he's only talked up Marsh and Beer. That's it. You know of others or is this just silly hyperbole?
