Well no sooner had Goody announced his impending retirement than I started to think about who will be the one to lead us in the future years. Is there anyone who stands out at the moment who has the makings of a captain, and in which mold? Who are the candidates? I'd be interested in your thoughts as to who you think should be the next captain and the reasons for it.

In my mind it comes down to three guys.

VB - needs to stay on the park but has leadership qualities
Rutten - a rock on the field but does he have the capacity to lift the team in his current role
Dangerfield - oozes class and leadership but does he have the experience?

Thoughts?

It'll be VB. Fantasies about cpt. Dangerfield are great, and I think the club is grooming him for the role in the following VB, but he's got a way to go yet.

I think VB will make a fantastic captain, he ticks every box.

In the Fox Sports News report at 2:30pm they had footage of him shaking Symes' hand while handing him a football. Take out of that what you will

Someone good, experienced and relatively young.

Do we have anyone that fits that criteria?

VB runs hard, is courageous and can accumulate possessions but he doesn't have alot of class and makes some poor decisions.

^Actually that pretty much describes Goodwin this season so might be a straight swap.

Danger is still learning how to play AFL football so there is no way you can give him the captaincy. It looks inevitable but not for a couple of years.

Captain : Scott Thompson

V.C. Nathan Van Berlo

Would have had Bernie Vince under consideration but I'm now thinking he may be a bit immature.

Sounds like he shook symes hand and gave him a football. Symes surely wouldnt be in the running. I reckon it'll be vb or truck, but I wish we'd go straight to danger, bugger his age, carey was captain at 21.

Why in gods name would anyone want Dangerfield as captain? I want him to play freely without the added pressure of captaincy for as long as possible!

Thompson & van Berlo for captain & VC. I'd probably prefer van Berlo but giving them both of these roles will hopefully see them stay put for good.

Dangerfield is 20 years old and isn't finding the easy footy often enough to go with the hard stuff.

He has enough things to deal with as it is without being lumped with the captaincy so early in his career, he shouldn't and won't be anywhere near it.

van Berlo appears the obvious choice, but I think it'll be a close run thing between he and Thompson.

I agree danger doesnt have a heap of age/experience, but we probably think vB is older than he actually is. He's only 23, danger is 20. I know its enough of an experience advantage to make a difference, but its just not as big as some may think.

An interesting point is that if vB is given the captaincy, he's not really likely to have it taken off him one day, right?

That'd mean danger wouldnt be able to captain til vB is retired, however danger would be not far off retiring by then anyway. (especially the way his body gets battered)

This is only regarding IF danger is be groomed for it, but you'd think a player around 27 would need to take over now.

Just a thought.

PS i think thompson may get it

and danger is not ready in my opinion

It wouldn't be the end of the world if danger didn't ever get it. If van Berlo gets the nod and is captain for 10 years I certainly wont be complaining - he is serious captain material :thumbsu:

then i guess the no.1 candidates would be Thompson, Rutten, Bock or Stevens, but Thompson isn't even in the leadership group at the moment...could that signify the fact that he isn't really seen as a leader within the club? Rutten will probably get it then, if they don't go with vB.

fwiw - that's the reason I went Thompson instead of van Berlo

van Berlo... with Symes as a dark horse (noting that he was voted into the leadership group this year).

Anyone suggesting Vince needs to get their head checked. He's had 2 strikes already in his career and his 4kg weight gain this year (relative to 2009) says that his attitude to training isn't what it should be for a player with leadership ambitions.

It will be interesting to see what they do with the leadership group next year. Will they keep the same large group, or go for a more "select" group of 4 or 5? We're likely to lose 4 members of the leadership group this year, so who comes in to replace them?

I think thommo seemed to fall out of favour from the whole car vroom vroom smash thing.

And yeah vince has no chance with his record

As I recall, he's the quiet and aloof sort with no aspirations for leadership.

He sounded quite keen on AA altho' admitted he needed to work on his leadership around the Club to fulfil such a thing.

He also made it clear that its the players who pick the captain. So you would have to imagine that it will come from the leadership group plus a couple who will undoubtedly jump into to replace those already in it. Note Dogga, Edwards, Burton and Stevo would have to drop out.

I expect Dangerfield (but is at least 3 years off), Knights, Porps and maybe Maric to replace them from an outsider looking in.

Whilst I appreciate Brad Symes comes across as a first class citizen, I'm not struck with the idea of an honest trier as our Captain, even before his injury he struggled on occasions to be in our best 22, just my opinion.

To be considered for Captain IMO the player should be a "lock" for a game every week.

Hawthorn's Richie Vandenberg was similar was he not??? Just not what I envisage as Captain of the AFC.

Symes because of his many good qualities, Leadership Group, yes, Captain, no.

Why Stevo? I don't see him going anywhere at the end of 2010. Mind you, I don't see him as captain of the team either given his age (29 next year).
