With Grimes and Batchelor playing a half each on Saturday and Grimes being subbed off for Batchelor. It seemed they were playing off for the one spot down back (probably reading to much into it). So the question is, who will play round one? Batchelor or Grimes.

Had to vote for Batch, because in all honesty, he has looked far more improved during the pre-season and warrants selection over Grimes so far. Neither of their spots in the team are assured, so at the moment it is purely a week by week thing to determine which one makes the cut, it's a good thing to have going on, we want players fighting for spots.

We need a few blokes in the team against the scum who would be prepared to smash a few heads through the course of the night. Legally of course.

Batch is one of those blokes so if I had to choose it would be Batch. I think they'll both play though.
Not sure there's a match up for Astbury or if he's ready for a full tilt hit out although he was very good on the weekend. Not sure Lennon is ready for the heat of a R1 clash.

Completely f*@?*d up with the apostrophes there.

Perhaps that should read "check out Colin Hays' eyes" ... ?

I'm going for Grimes, mostly because I think he has better pace, and I suspect that's what we'll need. Batchelor very stiff to miss after a good pre-season. I'd pick him over Grimes most weeks.

I'm assuming that the Carlton marking forwards we'll need to cover are Henderson, Casboult and Jones. So I'd be taking in Rance, Astbury and Chaplin, respectively, to pick them up.

I'd always play two distributors off the HBF, so I'd name Houli and Lennon. Carlton will play a defensive forward on one of those guys.

One starting spot left, and I'd play Vlaustin in front of either Grimes or Batchelor.

I really can't say which other two Carlton will start forward. Maybe Menzel (is he fit?) and Tutt? Both have some pace, so Grimes off the bench, IMO.

Chaplin / Jones Astbury / Casboult Vlaustin / ? Menzel (a match up worth the price of admission)
Houli / defensive forward Rance / Henderson Lennon / Tutt

If Henderson plays forward, who plays on Griffiths? Jaksch? I hope that happens. That's assuming we don't play a 3rd tall. If we did, Henderson would definitely be playing back. Looking at this game on paper, we should win by 100 points. A shame that it's not.

I haven't seen much of Jaksch, but he seems promising. I don't think he can go with Griffiths in the air, though, so I'd be pretty happy with that match up too.

Malthouse really has a dilemma with Henderson. His might be both their best KPF and KPD. Jamieson has been a rock for many years, and usually flogs Riewoldt, but like a lot of their core players, his a bit old, a bit slow and a bit injury prone. Henderson might have gone past him, as a defender.

Agree completely about how lop-sided this game looks on paper. I can't even work up the usual amount of hatred for those cheating bastards. I might not even get drunk and mouthy at the game! It helps that Waite has gone. And Maclean. If we win this one, it will be 3 out of the last 4, and it starts to look like we have the wood on them, not the other way around. Then, I might be forced to find another team to hate as my villain.

And to tie all that back to the subject of this thread, I don't think the choice between Batchelor, Grimes, or both, will matter much. Carlton's hopes all rest on the dodgy shoulders of a 31 year old eye gouger.
