Know he was behind Mitchell & Sewell in the pecking order at Hawthorn concerning inside midfielders.

Young & carries the most famous name at Hawthorn. Was traded 2 years after getting drafted, not long at all.

If I were a Hawks fan, I'd be questioning why such a promising youngster was let go in a period they have topped up with older players with doubts over their long term prospects.

I don't know what Hawthorn were thinking when they did that trade as we got Kennedy very cheaply and McGlynn was thrown in like a set of stake knives and both players have been brilliant for the Swans both last year and the start of this year.

McGlynn may have been a player who was in and out of the Hawthorn side but last year when McGlynn was injured Swans fans were counting the weeks until he was fit so we could get him back in the side.

I do think we pushed Kennedy out a little bit. If we'd offered him a bone he would have stayed. As it was the coaches offered him one year and told him he wouldn't get a game ahead of Mitchell, Sewell and Hodge. I think the coaches just thought he was too slow and too poor a kick. The small grounds in Sydney are certainly to his advantage. I also think Sydney are much more willing to let him play to his strengths. They basically let him patrol between CHB and CHF, minimising the running he needs to do. Clarkson doesn't appear to be willing to compromise his gameplan for a player.

McGlynn had already been poached by Sydney and said he would go to the draft if we didn't trade him. Sydney offered both more money and longer deals than we could.

As it was we traded two fringe midfielders, and used those draft picks to get Stratton, a defender everyone agrees we needed, and Grimley, a project ruckman, basically adding depth to our two main weaknesses. Grimley is a pretty speculative pick, but Stratton alone makes the deal worth if for us. He's not better than the two guys we gave up, but we need him a hell of a lot more.

Incidentally I found the short bit of the Sydney/Pies game I saw fascinating. Collingwood have drafted a bunch of running midfielders to fit into the way they want to play, they would easily beat Kennedy if they got loose with the ball, but in the parts of the game I saw they couldn't get they hands on it because Kennedy was just too big and strong at the stoppages. He got the clearance time and time again. It's all well and good to have a bunch of skinny fast guys, but it's clear inside players still have their place.

Just listen to Jason Dunstall when another commentator compliments Kennedy and Mcglynn!
He talks them down each time but you can tell he's spewin:D:thumbsu:

And what exactly are guys like Luke Ball, Scott Pendlebury, Andrew Krakouer and Jarryd Blair? Throw in Dane Swan, Dale Thomas, Dayne Beams and Steele Sidebottom for good measure too- all of whom are capable of playing both inside and out.

A little thought going into a post wouldn't go astray.

Swans saw something in both him and McGlynn that Hawthorn didn't. It was a brilliant piece of insightful recruiting. Hawthorn would have liked to keep them, but didn't rate them nearly as much as the Swans did. It's all very well to say the Swans offered them more, but had Hawthorn rated them at their true worth they would have paid/offered better contracts.

That said, Hawthorn's recruitment of Stratton was in turn a very astute piece of drafting, so they come away from it OK, but there's no doubt they underpaid badly. They could have done much better in the trade, and still drafted Stratton.

Has similarities to the Mumford situation, Geelong just couldn't match Sydney's offer of a 4 year deal on a larger pay packet.

Have to disagree with you there, kennedy was offered a 1 yr deal at hawthorn and told he would not get a game ahead of hodge, sewell, mitchell, lewis (fair enough). we offered him a 3 yr contract and a place in our 22, money barely had anything to do with his decision

Where are people going with the smaller grounds argument? In his last 4 games, if you count the 1st round of the nab cup as 1 game he's been either BOG for both teams or just swans. These games have taken place at ANZ, MCG, Manuka and Etihad, none of which are small.

Why did they trade him?:confused:
Am I happy to see him doing well? :D:D
At the Swans and not the Hawks? :(:(:(
AmI angry to see a J.KENNEDY not wearing the Brown and Gold after starting his career with us?:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad: absolutely!

No use crying over spilt milk. Just another reason why Clarko is under the pump!

Because they are idiots. No but really, I don't understand how Lewis or even Sewell considering his last year gets a game ahead of Kennedy right now if they were in the same team. So I think we won this trade pretty easily, despite the Hawks getting Stratton who is an undersized KPB.

Did they play last night?

Swan and Thomas seemed to spend more time on the flanks and wing respectively.

Krakouer seemed reactive rather than proactive when in the centre. Still got the ball, but read it of the fumbles of others.

Ball, well he is Luke Ball. Second and third efforts are still grey.

I think the fact that Josh looked imposing last night would have led some to think it was under 18's v under 14's in some contest.

Beams... Well just ask Mick Malthouse.

Yep, they have a place and would generally beat Lewis Jetta for a hardball.

A little thought going into a post wouldn't go astray.

Indeed.

They got Grimley out of the Kennedy trade. Stratton was part of the McGlynn trade.

It's in his profile on the website, while McGlynns states he was traded for 46 and 70.

Relax dude, it was a practice game. I didn't say Collingwood didn't have inside players, I said Kennedy was too strong for the particular kids he was up against in a handful of contests in a practice match. For what it's worth, in one ball up I remember he swatted Beams (and a second guy who I couldn't make out) aside like they were flies. I always though Beams had a good build for a young player, but Kennedy looked like a giant in there.

Sheedy better keep his grubby mitts of him :p
