Well considering the scientific community is still unsure, I don't think you will find an answer here :o

I thought there was a scientific reason for it? something to do with a loss of direction, maybe that was just a hypothetis or maybe I'm thinking of a different animal altogether :p

Monkster, that is one of the "theories", another is that one gets lost & sends out a distress signal & the others go to help. I don't think we will ever know the real reason, unless they learn to talk. ;)

Another theory is their looking for drugs. This theory goes back to the days our raw sewerage pipes emptied straight into the oceans (the 60's & 70's). With everyone on some sort of prescribed or illegal drug our faeces was good sh/t. Now we have redirected our sewerage to treatment plants the whales know that there are drug dealers at most beaches and are only trying to get to the car park. :o

Don't buy that.

I have a theory I think they feel the seismic moving of the sea and plates. This sends their sonar out of control. I have noticed most beachings occur with earthquakes , tremors or aftershocks.

There's word that it could be the navy, who were in the area at the time. Their sonar would have the same effect as an earthquake to a lesser extent.

22 posts per day. No wonder you're lacking in quality. Then again, what else is there to do in Launnie?

Let's face it, Launceston is Ballarat with less excitement.

Picturesque, too.

The words Ballarat and excitement shouldn't be uttered in the same sentence.

In the area after the second beaching. The report I heard said they weren't about for the first.

Do whales sleep?

Ballarat is OK,more exciting then Amarillo,Texas. But then anywhere is more exciting then Amarillo.

Why doe Whales beach themselves... Really interesting article in last months Cosmos (Science Magazine) talking about the effect of increased noise pollution from boats etc, in our oceans and how it is effecting the marine life... Interesting read...

Also talks about how the sonar from Ships (eg the ones that map the floor of the ocean, etc) interfers with the navigation of said marine life...

Who knows...

Is it at all possible they're not as smart as we like to think? Maybe it's just rampant stupidity.
