i started supporting dockers cause they were the ultimate underdogs.

supporting freo used to be about going for the most useless team in the afl and being quite proud. maybe we as a group (supporters and players) got a little cocky after 2006. we had our position flying firmly under the radar of all the other clubs, sneaking a win here and there in the most improbable circumstances. till we nearly blindsided the whole afl in 2006, only to fall short in the prelim.

in 1994 we started our long history of not conforming to the 'done' thing.

our colours, logo and name - classic

our song, the best and worst in the afl all wrapped in one.

getting modra sure added a bit of razzle dazzle, bought the club its first success....mark of the year 96 or 97?

we have long had the ugliest team in the afl, lead by mr beautiful himself, shaun mac. we have tried to inject a bit of glam (croad, tarrant) but it doesn't seem to work, the ugliness prevails. There is rumors that young collard had to leave due to him not being ugly enough.

which leads to big clive waterhouse the only serious contender to shauns mr beautiful crown.
(anyone else remember that he was schammer's mentor when young byron got drafted...hmmmmm)

johnny docker

our infamous trading....we dont need good draft picks to get better

losing the first however many derby games (losing the first by 80 odd really set the tone for the relationship during the 90's).

however the derby is now the number 1 and 2 days in the dockers calenders.
in no small part due to the efforts of sir derek kickett who stood up and was counted, leading to a proud tradition of us bullying the weagles.

actually its not because they are
underdogs its because its always entertaining and the eventual success is gonna be verrrrrrrrry sweet

I arrived in Australia in 1997 and it took me couple of years to get used to the game since I never knew anything about it. Everyone I met followed WCE and the Dockers were like a poor cousin. I liked them at first because they were the underdogs. I don't like the attitude of fans [WCE fans] that hate the other mob because they play like shit and not because they are the arch cross-town rivals which should be the sole reason. Also, the arrogance by WCE as a club that was evident at the time didn't work for me either. I was very impressed by Freo fans being louder than WCE fans even as a minority. My passion grew as the years gone by and I'm as one-eyed Freo supporter as you can get. There are other sporting clubs that I follow and I always stick with them, through thick and thin. Current climate may not be optimistic but Freo will turn it around. I know it will.

You shouldn't ask questions like this on a week like this. It is simply not fair and adds to the depression.

I arrived in Aussie a few years ago and two years ago we were raising money for Fresh Futures (Woolworths Charity for PMH), and as our daughter was born premmie, we of course used their services.

It was about this time I needed to support a team, when I support a team - there aren't any others.

So on the derby weekend I got two checkout chicks - one in Freo, and one in Infidel uniform. I told them which ever raised the most money would be the team I would support.

They both raised a lot of money, but the Freo supporters were more supportive. My first game I saw this again when we had the purple haze game the next season.

I've gone to every home game since - except Geelong last year because Qantas couldn't get the plane in an hour earlier.

Our team is down, but there is not a single day that goes by that I don't think of the passion I have for the club. We could lose all season, and I will still be there backing the boys, and could never imagine missing a game, because they don't deserve our support.

That is what seperated us from other clubs - we are there week in and week out supporting our team, regardless.

Geelong game this year most saluted our players - yes we should of won that game, but we didn't, we weren't even expected to - in fact we were suppose to be whipped into the ground.

Purple Passion - that's what we have to show - and if you were one of the people who put money in the Freo tin - I thank you from the bottom of my heart as I certainly wouldn't want to have to sing my team song with the words along the bottom of the screen at Subi.

I support one team - Freo - I will applaud any team playing against the infidel sparrows.

When I was a baby, Mum used to decorate my pram in red, white and black. She was determined to make sure I was a St Kilda fan right from the start. I even had a little Peter Everitt "Saint" doll :D

When WC won their first AFL grand final, we had just moved here from Melbourne, so we still had Victorian number plates. Anyway, she was driving down a main road here, and was run off by a car, whose driver was shouting abuse, such as "Haha, ____ you you ____ing Victorian!! Us mighty Eagles showed you!!" or something like that. So, since that day, Mum has hated the Eagles (hence why I don't go for them).

Anyway, when Freo came into the AFL (btw, I was...6ish so kinda still had Mum feeding my St Kilda crap :D) Mum had a soft spot for them. Even though we were originally from the east, we've lived on the west side for most of my life. I continued to be a Saints supporter (not a full on one, just watched the occasional game) until I lost interest in AFL around 99.

Mum continued to be a St Kilda fanatic with a soft spot for Freo and in 2004, she went to the Saints/Freo match at Subi. Unfortunately, she received a phone call from Freo FC telling her she couldn't have the tickets, as they were in the wrong section or some crap. They offered her tickets to the next Freo home game instead (against the Lions), to which she said she didn't want them as she wasn't a Freo fan, and all she wanted was tickets to the Saints/Freo match. Anyway, they found her some for this match, and also gave her tickets to the Freo/Lions match.

I reluctantly went along to the Lions game (think I had a couple of assignments due that Monday, so was close to not going). And we won. And Medders kicked 9. I was so friggen hyped up, that me and some of our family friends were screaming stuff out the window all the way from Subi to Rockingham :D. Almost lost my voice!! Since then, I've been a fan. And Mum has tried to work out who to blame...:D

Haha, and I think my obsession has gotten to my father, who goes for Freo now. Not as much as me though. But ever since the game where Justin kicked the goal after the siren, he's been a fan just to annoy Mum...

Because it seasonally gives me an excuse to by a new TV every Winter; for some reason they keep breaking, something to do with the fast moving bricks and glass/plastic panels not mixing too well ... just finished cleaning up the shards from last weekend just then :D.

Seriously though, short version, went for Souths as I grew up pretty much in the Freo area (went to high school there etc.) and my Grand Father lived in Beaconsfield.

Was only vaguely in to football when WC were doing there thing and being fairly WA patriotic was happy when they got their first flags. Kind of went for Carlton as a real young'n in the VFL but had no great affinity. Then the Dockers were born, and 'the passion' was ignited inside of me - I remember when it was announced and I was at a friends place in East Freo and we decided there and then we would be at the launch. I remember saying at the time that if it was a national Freo Chess Team I would be supporting it ... The whole Freo thing is importnant for me. The port, the cultural mix, the working class roots, the Irish-Catholic heritage, the South/East Freo WAFL history, the pubs etc. etc. Of course, the attraction goes beyond physical location, but its awfully symbolic to me ... so there ya go.

i think it takes away the depression... i didn't start supporting them because i thought they would win a premiership...i started because they were the underdogs for a long time in WA and they seemed like the kind of team that perhaps i could have played for (wistful thinking i know)

my pe teacher in high school, clint roberts, was there first fitness coach which may also have something to do with my blood being purple.

any success that comes our way is gonna be sweeter for all the sour times we have put up with

great stories by the way...love the JESUS pic from big lebowski.....

you try any of that shit on the courts im gonna take that gun, stick it up your arse and pull the trigger till it goes click
