I believe the fact we dont have a developing ruckman on our list this is hindering the development of our younger forwards.
With Orren out with the Flu the ruck duties were left to Griff and Elton. These players need to spend more time developing in the forward line and not worrying about playing full time ruck. We are playing with two ruckman in our AFL squad so why arent we playing with two in our VFL?

We need to address this problem at the end of this season. If Orren retires at seasons end we may need two.

I recall Hardwick saying last year that Maric was playing injured and gong forward he would need to be managed. The result was to bring an injury prone hack from Carlton and think that was it. I can't believe we didn't rookie draft a kid under 21 that could run around in the twos and develop. I can only think they have a hell of a lot higher opinion of Vickery than I do and given the contract extension back in February this backs that up.

We have an awful lot of list issues at the moment but this is probably the biggest.

Too worried about trading dericx for megan gale and her lesser half... At least she'll look good at the bandf this year.

Yes we do , his name is Shaun Hampson and he needs to be playing VFL , the guys got a. 3 year contract and we are stuck with him . Make him play a year of VFL with Choco breathing over his shoulder that is our only hope.

This is a sad sad joke . Blair is on acid getting this clown to our club.

Because it's not important to have an 18 year old ruck man. They waste a spot on the list for how many years and the chances of them actually coming on are quite slim. I actually like Richmond's philosophy when it comes to big men is to let other clubs develop them for you. We have 3 pure ruckman and 3 tall forwards in the VFL who have all played ruck in their careers. It was simply unfortunate that Orren came up sick but it was good practice for Elton and Griff because it simulates what could happen in a real game if a ruck were to go down.

Really? Out of all the problems on our list, you think that the biggest is not having a teenage ruckman running around in the VFL?

I realise your joking but even with him we should have a couple of kids developing. One at about 20-21 and the other 18

Disagree.

I get your point in regards to an 18 year old being on a list for a while before he gets his chance but our forwards arent exactly banging the door down with their performances. More time is needed developing them as forwards rather than ruck

No not having a developing ruck is. He doesn't need to be a teenager just have some skills that need developing so he can be backup if required.

We are developing them as forwards. It was just a one-ff today as Stephenson went down with the flu.

Again. If our biggest list problem was "not having a developing ruck to be back-up when required," I'd be dancing and crying of joy. We should be focusing on our seniors who have some serious problems.

Great post but we should have a developing Ruckman it's common sense

Doesn't harm the Hawks or Pies to have these ruckman on a list that don't get games but are there developing and get called on in a blue moon.

Ceglar looks quality now and will take over from Hale and allow McEvoy to have a break now and again.

One list spot. A rookie list spot can be made available to absorb a development phase for an 18 year old ruckman. Surely?

Then again, with our development it's probably for the best.

Add West Coast to your list

I wouldn't have a problem with us using a rookie pick on a ruckman. However, chances are that under the current Richmond regime, he wouldn't make it, and even in the slightest chance that he did, how long would it take for us to actually reap the reward? 4 years? 5 years? 8 years? You can have a rookie up to three years and then he ends up taking a senior spot. And again, since the chances are against him to actually make it, there goes one spot wasted.
I'd much rather use a rookie spot on a 24 year old state ruckman, ala Derrickx (who looks good with the Swans) who would actually be able to provide for us if our ruck stocks became depleted.

We have no backup for ruck, we have plentiful options all over the ground. Our list is pretty ordinary but the ruck department is a glaring dark hole. Not having someone to come in if required needs to be addressed if Maric or Hampson goes down then what?

Sound logic and I don't disagree with you. If there is a state ruckman that has a chance at making it, has some afl attributes and a chance to improve then yes get him in.

But I see some kids get overlooked and a year or two later they are on AFL lists and doing well.

We absolutely waste our rookie picks and having one spot dedicated to a junior ruckman that has the upside to make it in a three year time frame shouldn't be ignored.

But we need better coaches and definitely a dedicated ruck coach. We are penny pinching at Richmond. Need to start to invest in the football department.

Stephenson. Then in the unlikely event that all 3 of our ruckman are down, which again, is a highly unlikely event, we'd have to play our ruckmen in probably the order of Vickery>Griffiths>Elton (All around 200cm and would be competitive in the ruck) and then you'd be scraping the bottom of the jar with players like McBean and then maybe Astbury/Chaplin.

Look we're talking in extreme hypothetical here. I'd rather recruit to improve the team rather than satisfy unlikely occurrences.

Vickery, Griffiths, Elton are not rucks. They are key position players who need every waking moment working on that part of their game. We need a backup plan that covers all possible contingencies. A developing ruck would ideally be a rookie and if and when Maric or Hampson suffer a long term injury he can be elevated.

Seriously if Hampson goes down it would be a blessing , let's be honest
