With talk of Playfair being drafted as a mature aged rookie, i ask, why? Surely we would be better off taking a kid and try to develop him. He's had his chances, and he's no Reiwoldt. Why persist with him?

Media work ;)

Pros
- we have plenty of spots available on our rookie list
- it's a shallow draft year
- depth
- when injury free he was a useful member for the side
- compromised drafts will force clubs to use rookie promotions instead of live draft picks.... Playfair is essentially a safer bet for that if his injuries are a thing of the past

Cons
- little prospect of being more than a depth player, with the incoming Bradshaw
- injury prone

depth and security.

He's a decent depth player. Injuries make him not worth a senior list spot, but with mature aged rookie spots now available, it's perfect for keeping him around as a depth player, and if his body can't recover, it's no major loss.

I guess as a depth player is a good idea, but his injury track record is not good. Say we keep him, and he breaks down early, it's a rookie spot wasted. Why not draft a KP late as a project. Jesse White anyone? He was taken in the 70's was he not. Why not try and steal Majak Daw from Norths?

I have to agree with picking up someone else in the rookie draft. Playfair wasn't available this season at all, and we managed to make do pretty well. I understand the argument that O'Loughlin and Hall have left, however Bradshaw and Dennis-Lane have been expressly recruited to fill gaps in our forward line, and Hall also had limited availability this season.

Someone like Matthew Panos also fills the role of "dreadfully limited key position forward" but is a lot younger, can kick straight and (so far) is fitter and healthier. Panos may go early, but there are plenty of other interesting KPP options such as Serhat Temel, Simon White and Chris Luff, along with a heap of small players with positive attributes.

Playfair at his best is a serviceable, though injury prone, player of average to above average quality, and a great clubman. At worst he is an injured 26 year old list clogger, with an unreliable kick.

A rookie selection I feel has greater potential upside. You don't take anyone in the rookie draft expecting them to be a top 5% player like Brett Kirk, but the chance of selecting someone with high ability is definitely there.

Now i do not even like the look of him as an insurance player. He is a useless list clogger hack.

Chris Luff? first Ive heard of him, whats he like?

youth overrated. heaps of kids go through the system without playing a game(especially rookies) we're still going to pick up 4 or so kids anyway. Playfair is servicable at AFL level and with the very last spot on the list he prolly will give us more then a kid would(especially in the short term, don't have alot of tall depth and the ones we have are kids who aren't going to instantly come in and be superstars)

How did i know you would like Playbad

Gee, wouldn't it be good to see another Luff on our list? We could nickname him Stand Jnr :D (Yeah, not my best effort). Still hoping we take Panos.

He plays here in WA so I've seen a bit of him. Unfortunately he looks absolutely nothing like big Troy, has short dark hair and doesn't stand out from 10 miles away like the other Luffy.

He has definitely got his benefits, but was never going to be selected early in the draft as he doesn't set the house on fire. He isn't an attention drawing player, he goes about his role solidly and is a good negating defender. He reads the play fairly well, has a good work rate and seems to demonstrate good commitment. Has no worries about forcing a contest and will not shy away from the hard marking situations, he is "only" 190cm but Bolton isn't much taller than that, and Luff is quite decent overhead.

I have a preference for smart footballers with good work ethic rather than just being obsessed with the freak athletes, so in my opinion a player like Luff is worth a shot on the rookie list.

Pros: Name
Cons: Supports West Coast
