Why sell our home game?

Why don't we just sell the 4 points next time? Don't even play the game?
Advantages:

1. No risk of injuries.
2. Players get a week off.
3. No stress for fans.
4. By having an auction for the 4 points, we can probably score a huge amount of dosh from a club who really needs them.

Can you point out to me where he's wrong?

Win against port, we're in the 8

Lose and we're out. These games are crucial when it comes down to the end of the season and the top 8 is being sorted. He's not saying we're going to win a premiership if we get into the finals, he's saying we'd draw a big crowd and get more memberships for next year. He's absolutely right for my mind.

Spot on! What's with the world these days, you can't get upset, have an opinion or tell it like it is...

If by some amazing feat we did make the 8 without selling this game. How far do people seriously think we would have made it? Look how well Bris and Ess went after making the 8 early with a new coach... How about we just go and develop for long term success instead of pleasing these bandwagoners...

Re: Price of 4 points?

I shake my head when a club like ours sells a home game. Would rather earn less in front of our 19th man who would have got us over the line. We would have played better anyway without the slippery conditions. If we miss out on the finals by % we'll be losing $ too

Band wagoners ?

Oh FFS.

Yep i've been on the bandwagon for 20 years.

At the time we sold the game, we needed $6m. Seems reasonable to sell 1 game there (and another in Cairns) to help that cause doesn't it? Gale has already stated that we need the money, and the travel will help us in the long term. Playing Port up there instead of another team (eg, Brisbane, WC, Freo or Adelaide) was probably the bad part.

At the end of the day, we're still a young team. Finals are still a while away, I'd be surprised if we made it this year. I think it's a loss we can afford to lose (we can still get a better draft pick out of it) at this stage of our developing squad.

Yeah good points madtiger. I can't help but feel this is the last of these deals we'll be making. Unfortunately there probably isn't a chance to worm out of the remainder of the deal...

A win in front of 40,000 at home, more memberships and more chance of playing finals is more money

Gee you are a strange one with your obsession with crowd numbers. Most blokes get of on pr0n, you get aroused with a yellow and black abacus.

Break even crowd is around 25k at Etihad, after that you make a profit. We wouldnt get no more than 30k tops, but Darwin has contributed to 500k profit.

Fact, this was announced in October last year, and the players have been aware and understand the situation. If we are to be a quality unit we have to win everywhere, not just in the comfort zone of home games with a big home crowd advantage.

Open your eyes and look at the bigger picture for once, and not just crowd and membership numbers.

How so? You don't directly make any money from finals

We're going to finish between 9-12 so the draft pick will be ordinary anyway. Surely we're past playing for draft picks.

Re: Price of 4 points?

Disagree. This is not even an excuse for the effort the football department and players dished up tonight. Only positive to come from tonight's game is the $$$...

If we played at the MCG or Etihad we win, simple as that. But no, we have to sell our home game and play our worst game of the season. F***en Joke
We lost to Port in Round 22 last year in Melbourne so why would we be such certainties this year?
Fact is it is an excuse, we should have won anywhere the game was played

We're a better team this year and Port as worse this year, i have no doubt we would have won if we played in Melbourne.

You have anything worthwile to say or you just going to repeat with your DC replies?

1- We would not get 40k to this game in Melbourne. More than likely it would be played at Etihad on a Sunday twilight fixture. We would maybe get 25-30k and lose money playing at that stadium.
2- The level of Football we played tonight means that even if we did play in Melbourne, we would have lost.
3- This year is another development year and all about getting games into the kids - Don't become short-sighted, think long term..

See above.

Sorry but that doesn't mean anything
We were complacent tonight, could have happened at any venue

How many times did our players fumble due to conditions, our skills were sloppy and marks were almost non-existent. Take us to the G and these issues drop 99% and we expose Port's weaknesses.

This is no different to the crap that always sees us playing the Western Bulldogs at the dome even when it is our home game. Our home is the G and we play it better than any other ground, that is where we belong.

Re: Price of 4 points?

Probably would have lost in Melbourne to be honest. They were up, we weren't. We're still pretty fragile, just gotta face it.

Re: Price of 4 points?

Part of the money we made tonight will allow player X to recover quicker, player Y to heal quicker, Recruiter Z to pick a better player, Coach W to get further education, Physio V to get a new recovery gizmo, Richo to get a full time camera crew…. It adds up to us being debt free and spending on the good things we need to get that elusive 11th flag.

Re: Price of 4 points?

If we can't beat Port anywhere on the planet, we don't deserve 4 points.

Bullshit black mark against the administration IMO. Why didn't they just ask the fans for donations if they wanted money. We are not Melbourne, North Melbourne, Western Bulldogs we have fans and people are willing to give money to the club. Also why the **** did we only go up a day before the game. We should've been up there from Monday adjusting to the conditions. I am so disappointed!

They have asked the fans for money, via the FTF, and for the whole year they haven't donated as much as we've gotten as much from the sold games.

Re: Price of 4 points?

the price of four points is less than the price of debt and financial instability. Was save our skins that long ago?

The Price Of Four Points

G'day guys. I wrote up an article on the deals that have been worked out in regards to Richmond playing "home" games away and all things related. Just thought I'd share it with you guys to get an opinion of my work outside of the Carlton Board.

I'll post the full article as I'm not interested in getting hits. Comments on how I could improve my writing would be appreciated. :thumbsu:

EDIT: Just realised there is another thread with the same title. I'm mentally stealing my title ideas from BigFooty. :o

Just eight months ago, Richmond Tigers chief executive Brendon Gale would have been quite chuffed with himself after coming to an agreement with the AFL to play a home game in Cairns in 2011. The deal, which added a much-needed $500,000 to the $1 million over three-years agreement which would see the Tigers play two home game at Darwin's TIO Stadium, would wipe out a slab of the club's $4.5 million debt accumulated during Punt Road Oval's renovation.

On a glum and gloomy Saturday night in Darwin, the price Richmond paid on the field doesn't appear as though it was worth the income.

After claiming a huge scalp against rivals Essendon in the 'Dreamtime At The G' match just one week prior, the Tigers ventured up to TIO Stadium to face a seemingly dejected Port Adelaide outfit, who were sitting on the bottom of the ladder before to the game. After winning their past four out of five games, it appeared as though Richmond would have no problem disposing of the Power who were merely acting as a stepping stone.

Many watched in disbelief as Port Adelaide ran out victors by 15-points.

If the game had been played in Melbourne, as it rightfully should have been, it's hard to believe that the result would remain the same. In front of a pro-Richmond crowd, the Tigers would have been near-certainties to get the job done.

As it turns out, Brendon Gale effectively sold four points as part of the $1 million three-year deal.

If passing up four points wasn't bad enough, Richmond have given up all momentum going into the bye, leaving players uncomfortable with their positions within the team and supporters more disgruntled than ever. Furthermore, the Tigers will face Sydney at the SCG and Brisbane at the Gabba in consecutive weeks after their week off, meaning that Richmond fans will have to wait five weeks in between games at their rightful home in Melbourne.

Tigers supporters have every right to be unhappy after the way they have been shafted by this deal. Not only do they miss seeing this game in Melbourne, they will lose another down the line when Richmond hit the road again, giving up a second home game to face the Gold Coast Suns at Cairns' Cazaly's Stadium on July 16th. The contest will be the first competition-round AFL game to be played in Cairns, and although it is a huge publicity boost for the AFL, the possible result could leave a lot of the Richmond faithful in hysterics.

After so many years of being toyed with by the Richmond management, you would think that a quick-cash scheme to get the Tigers back in the green before the start of the 2012 season could be overlooked for the opportunity to play finals in 2011. With the very realistic possibility of the Tigers being overrun by a climatised Gold Coast side later in the year, those eight premiership points gone begging could be the difference between top eight and bottom eight by crunch time at the end of the season.

Richmond will get out of debt; that is certain. However, the desire to get out of debt as fast as possible could result in Richmond missing yet another finals series since their last premiership success in 1980. After ten long years between finals births, September may go begging for one more year due to an unnecessary deal.

Income is great for a football club but under these circumstances, it's hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel if you're a Richmond fan. The figures for selling the games are good, but the figures for winning the games are much more important.
